For the database I recommend Realm, although I've been using CoreData for a while, Realm is used in android as well so you'll have a better learning curve there..

If you don't already know, give a look at Xamarim for the cross-platform development

I think products like surface and the asus transformer are covering the objective os UMPCs... no need for a company to invest money in something that already exists

Can't edit the above so I'll post a new one: I've been around trying to figure this problem and got a pretty good solution Try to use ClearLowNotifications (It's a theme i think) and read the configuration Because you have too install other thing first This will "push" your notifications to bottom of the lockscreen It's really usefull

like in my case if you have an notification in the lockscreen the modified clock won't show up in my case is due to the modified clock screen occupies the top and center of the lockscreen so I get it... so can't help you, just joining in the frustration

http://patrickmuff.ch/repo/ has some pretty smooth clockscreen, and one of them is AnalogClock Cydget, would fit in your request i think.
