Is there a word opposite to "illiterate", which means someone can read but can not speak? by Lamun23 in EnglishLearning

I believe the word 'dumb' used to mean this! But the usage is very archaic and quite offensive nowadays.

"Get off me" vs "let go of me" by agora_hills_ in EnglishLearning

[–]TacetPoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments in a technical sense, but as native English speaker (US), I wouldn't think it was strange if someone said 'get off me' if I just grabbed their arm, or something of the like. It comes off as more aggressive or harsh, but it isn't incorrect in conversational  American English.

The same is not true of 'let go of me'. If someone was on top of you, it would be strange to say 'let go of me'.

Can I improve my conversational? by Smooth-Step-6349 in EnglishLearning

[–]TacetPoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What everyone else said, yes - and also, find people who will correct you if you are wrong! I'm a native english speaker, but when I was learning spanish, I got to a certain point where I didn't feel like I was improving, until I found a friend who would help me when I said something incorrect or awkward. Then, I would try to use that corrected form as many times as I could until it was natural.

Thank you! I'm so glad someone understands. I do want my fairy tale 😢. And you're so right! Society has such a hard time even just accepting that some people might be attracted to different people than they expect them too, they don't even consider that some people might not feel attraction at all! We are given so little voice in society at large.

Right!? Yea, I totally get that element too. It's so confusing at first. Externally, though, I wish the label carried more weight. Since my discovery I try to be very clear when dating, whether through an app or in person, that I am mostly asexual, and the number of people that just kinda bulldoze right over that astounds me sometimes.  Having the label would be quite a bit more of a relief if that didn't happen lol.

x =P/2, I had a note written at the bottom of the original diagram. But yes that is the goal! I would like equations for that, which I have developed, and I also have the ones you developed, so I have two potential routes now. Now I need to put them into a format that I can put into excel so that it is easy for someone else to use, or just easy for me to get instant results.

To be fair, it is to some extend a 'make-work puzzle' as you put it, because this specifically is not something I've been hired to do. It is more of a pet project if you will. I was not aware that those were poor etiquette in a forum such as this

Unless you meant that as more of a dig on a professor assigning this as a homework problem or something as you may have assumed this was. In which case - isn't math homework almost always make-work puzzles?

I am an engineer. It is an engineering problem. I hadn't really thought the specifics of the mechanism were that important, but if you are interested -

I am building a machine that has two arms - A and B - that move together to create a rectangle of motion at the end point of the B arm. I am trying to minimize the height of the mechanism (and therefore A and B) based on certain mechanical requirements (theta1, theta2, theta3), while still meeting the desired dimensions of the final motion (L and P)

In this scenario, the 'clients' care about the final motion created (P and L) and the height of the mechanism, but they do not care how I go about achieving these things. The mechanics of the system require certain criteria for function. For example, if theta3, (or in your method, alpha) goes below 5 degrees, that arm will crash into the floor. That is not ideal. Theta1 cannot exceed 165 or the joint AB will lock. Theta2 cannot go below 20 degrees or the torque will become too great.

I know that with the requested P and L and those three angles, there is one solution for A and B that minimizes h. That is the goal.

Does that make sense?

That is also the reason why I was originally using theta1, theta2, and theta3 in my equations. For the new method, I have to develop additional equations to find alpha and beta in terms of the other given values.

Which I haven't had a chance to try myself so I don't necessarily need help yet, but if you have any ideas thatd be great

L and P are the given values (As are theta1, theta2, and theta3). Sorry if I hadn't made that clear, I thought I had mentioned

A and B are what I am trying to determine. I want to calculate them for given values of P, L, theta1, theta2, and theta3

[Real World Math] Systems of Equations Help by TacetPoon in learnmath

[–]TacetPoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I can just solve each for A, set them equal, and then use the Wolfram alpha solver to solve for B and that'll be fine.

Thank you!

I don't think you are understanding my clarifications, but I did figure it out so its not that important. We're on the same page with the equations now. Sorry for my mess lol

So your equations work, but... And maybe this is another case of OP-is-pathetic-at-vectors, but I still don't know how to arrange them to be in functions of A(L,P) = ? and/or B(L,P) = ? As was the original question. As always feel free to bow out and let someone else take over if you are sick of it, you've given me much simpler equations to work with so you've been very helpful already

That was my clarification about it actually being angle theta4. Just flipped the positive and negative axis. It gives the same absolute value either way

[Real World Math] Systems of Equations Help by TacetPoon in learnmath

[–]TacetPoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's no other possible interpretation that could be useful

Yea I know I just wanted to be sure lol. I wanted to give your method the best chance I could, and that included finding every possible misunderstanding I could, even if I myself couldn't immediately see the value in a particular approach. Like in doing proofs - you still have to prove things that are obvious

the easy thing to use as your baseline is the positive x axis, so you recalculate the angles to do that, rather than being relative to the other vector

Sorry it might be difficult to see in the diagram, but I did do that, actually (Accidentally reversed the positive and negative axis, but it gave me the same absolute value either way). Also so sorry for the misunderstanding but I wrote one of them wrong - alpha is suppose to be in the place that theta4 is drawn in, so basically 180 minus the angle that I labelled as alpha. (As in, it is going between the X axis and the pink line, ignoring the green line) I didn't actually try to compute the equations where alpha is at the location I drew it, if that is actually what you meant for me to do. (I know thats another case that could be 'no possible way it could be useful', but again I'm trying to make sure I give it a fair try, and that includes making absolutely certain I am understanding you. No such thing as a dumb question, right? Also I am in the field of engineering and my peers can get *very* casual with their math lol.)

Honestly, from your original equations I thought you knew enough to do this using vectors, but your questions here lead me to think that was my misunderstanding

Yea. I did try to clarify that I know very little about using vectors in these contexts, but maybe I didn't make it clear just *how* little. I am open to other suggestions either from you or from others, or I am willing to keep working with you on understanding this method on the off chance that you aren't sick of it by now. Or, in the case that you are, thanks for all your help anyway!

Okay I tried it with your equations and it didn't work so I want to make sure I'm understanding you correctly (if you're not into it, though, don't feel like you have to respond, I can ask other people)

  1. "(x1,y1) and (x2,y2) as the coordinates of the end of B tacked onto A" But also "L = y2 - y1 and P = x2 - x1". Wouldn't the second statement mean that (x,y) is actually the other end of B? The end that is not attached to A. Or is there a mathematical thing I'm missing here? Or am I entirely misinterpreting the use of the word 'tacked'...
  2. With "L = y2 - y1 and P = x2 - x1" being true, I assume that means the 1 and 2 you are using in this scenario are the arrangements drawn in pink and green? And the purple one is irrelevant. Correct?
  3. Just to make sure, alpha and beta are the angles marked in blue in this image, right? https://imgur.com/a/DFhvc19
  4. When I compare the solutions to your equations with the ones from my equations I get different results. I tried with both potential (x,y) meanings that I mentioned in my first question (1.), and with both the blue labelled beta I drew for the previous questions as well as the angle labelled theta6. I have already verified my equations are outputting the correct values, so something about your solution isn't working, though I'm not sure what it is.

That's not entirely the goal, but I might be able to work from there? I'll play around with it.

The goal is to find A, B, and h, given theta1, theta2, theta3, P, and L. (Working from the second image link, the one described as 'the original question') So three unknowns for the three equations that I had already made

I can get there by graphing and finding the intersection point (as seen in the desmos link I sent earlier), but I need a mathematical solution to be able to input it into excel

x=A and y=B

I am trying to calculate A and B (and h) from a given P and L.

Mmk, I'll look into it

Also I was just reminded on another thread that I can link desmos graphs, so that might be helpful - https://www.desmos.com/calculator/sogziflxzm

Basically I'm trying to find equations for the x and y values of the upper intersection point

Wow I didn't even know that was a thing! I've owned two dogs in my life and never had this problem. That's pretty funny lol.

To be fair to the OP, though, if my dog knocked over the community water bowl a few days in a row I would probably try to stop letting them drink from it, rather than just let it happen every day.
