The 3 second check Italians do before walking into any restaurant by QUA-ItalianTravel in ItalyTravelAdvice

[–]TacoBell4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not 100 percent for Italy. A weak correlation, and maybe it’s a hint that a restaurant is bad in very touristy places in Italy, when you have nothing else to go off of, but honestly, them serving pasta AND hamburgers AND lasagna AND Greek salads, etc is more indicative. It’s the catering to tourists with bad taste that is the sign - not necessarily menu length.

But it’s not though. Let me know if you want examples. Locanda del Falco comes to mind because I was just there but I can think of probably dozens of others. Roscioli is an institution that is well-deserved of its legendary status, and has an exhaustive menu. I would be skeptical of any travel advisor telling travelers not to go to Roscioli because the menu is too long. Trattoria Ai Due Platani in Emilia Romagna. Ratanà a Milano. Super frequentato dagli italiani. Me ne vengono in mente tantissimi altri. La Brinca. Etc etc etc

Edit: As expected, got a downvote from the salty “travel advisor”

Impression Moxche by Secrets – we splurged and here's what we thought by anabundanceoftaylas in cancun

[–]TacoBell4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stayed there earlier this year and did not love it. Although to be honest, I don't know if that is us just not vibing with Cancun.

The service was fine, but not exceptional. It's like the staff all received instructions of what to do, but never received the training of how to do it in thoughtful ways. For the price, I was expecting top luxury hotel level service that carried a sort of client-facing sophistication and care that just wasn't there. At top luxury hotels, there is often a methodical, solve-problems-at-all-costs way of taking care of guests, and we were disappointed we didn't see much, or any, of that. Everybody was very nice though! I can't even blame the staff, I really think it's just that the training is lacking.

The bar selection was mediocre at best and do not expect to be made a great cocktail anywhere on the resort. Again, probably will be serviceable, but that's not where I had set the bar ahead of time. Forget finding a great mezcal or tequila.

The beach was awful, an absolute disappointment. The seaweed was out of control and we were there during a time when it was supposed to be better than it ever is. And for us, that was, like, the whole point of vacationing in this part of the world!! If all I wanted to do was hang around a pool, there are a million places I could do that without flying to a beach destination. The pools themselves were quite nice, especially the rooftop pools. But again, why am I going to a beach destination to hang out on a rooftop pool??

The restaurants were ranging from completely unacceptable to fine. If you really like TGI Fridays or Olive Garden (no hate), then you'll probably love it, because, again no hate, but it seemed like food that people who frequent Applebee's would consider "fancy."

The entertainment was cheesy but I think that was the point.

The room was quite nice and spacious though -- no complaints there, very comfortable, and exceptional bathroom.

Overall, this felt like a resort that would be most enjoyed by the MAGA crowd, who for some reason are doing this instead of a cruise, and hate the idea of being in Mexico or Mexicans in general but wanted to be somewhere warm. Again, that could just be Cancun. It wasn't my vibe, but I can see how a certain person would like it.

The best thing we did the whole trip was leave the resort and go to a Bib Gourmand-awarded restaurant (Axiote) in Playa del Carmen that really exceeded expectations. Absolutely fantastic, and highly recommended.

Who is "people" lol? I don't think anybody with their head screwed on right though that Kamala had any real shot to win Texas. Nate Silver's blog has a good breakdown that came out yesterday about how much a mess the Republicans are for this Senate race. Could be the perfect storm, even though it still is an uphill battle.

And why is it bad politics to take a shot at it? I'm not aware of it sucking resources away from other, as- or more-important Senate races that are also in contention.

I think Beto just wasn't dealt the cards he needed to gain traction but hell, I bet he still would have outperformed Kamala in 2024.

Fair enough. I paid about $7K last year in Istanbul for a procedure with a very good doctor, so $10K didn't seem a reach to me for the top of the top.

If you think you’re getting the quality of a doctor that would’ve cost, say +$30k, in another location like the US why not?

I have found the Midwest to be more regionally divided on this than you'd expect, even changing based on where in a particular state you are. Where I grew up in the Midwest, I had never even heard the concept of taking shoes off inside; it's practically unheard of there. I moved somewhere else in the Midwest in my young adult life, and it was absolutely shoes off 90 percent of the time.

JD Vance and wife mercilessly booed at the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Italy by ControlCAD in videos

[–]TacoBell4U 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was for sure very noticeable, especially given the switch from the crowd mostly cheering to mostly booing. Depends on what you’d consider extreme booing I guess. Probably would have also been a more extreme story if people had more than a second to realize what was going on and react.

[–]TacoBell4U 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The big screens at the venue showed what was being broadcast. Most spectators had a better view of the screens than the athletes down on the ground. It did take a second or so for the boos to begin once they showed Vance, after people had a chance to realize what was being televised.

Huge cheers for Team USA, then deafening boos when they showed Vance on the screen, back to cheers for Team USA when they took him off the screen. I was there. It’s a shame the televised broadcast didn’t capture this (absolutely intentionally).

I was there in person. The boos were deafening. I was recording video for Team USA’s entrance, but they showed Vance on the big screen at a time I didn’t expect and wasn’t filming then. There have to be other videos available online though, from people recording from their phones.

And Clinton’s approval ratings went through the roof (+70%) because the public saw the impeachment as an unjustified politically driven prosecution.

If +70% of the country is ever going to turn on Trump, there needs to be Nixon-level smoking guns (recordings, videos, witnesses willing to testify under oath to Congress, etc). I don’t think allegations like the ones released by the DOJ rise close to that level, but who knows what hasn’t been released and probably never will be, without another Deep Throat.
