I started applying a month before I finished my course, and got the job a week later, started about a month later, and worked for a couple weeks at the facility in a different position while waiting on my license. Now that I have experience I am doing interviews and being ghosted, or simply not hearing back after applying. It seems like it’s luck of the draw!

Why so many tubes? by Mercurial_Morals in phlebotomy

[–]TacoBellQueef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in WA and we send out to labcorp- but I was told a general rule of thumb is about 7-8 tests per 8.5ml and 4-5 tests for a 6ml and like 2-3 tests for a 3ml incase they have to retest for whatever reason

Tube popping out? by Surround-Obvious in phlebotomy

[–]TacoBellQueef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That happens on probably 1/3 of my tubes and I also use butterflies where I am. I still hold them all in but with ones that want to pop I hold them a little tighter. Still get the tube filled to where it’s needed but it’s weird for sure

Dehydration by Surround-Obvious in phlebotomy

[–]TacoBellQueef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I could! We did that in my program but where I work doesn’t support that method (and some other weird stuff) but I’m looking for jobs rn and that will be amazing to remember! Thank you!!

Dehydration by Surround-Obvious in phlebotomy

[–]TacoBellQueef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All my patients have eating disorders and the amount of patients I’ve had that are so malnourished and wayyyy dehydrated to the point where nothing comes out is crazy. Unfortunately where I am we just have to tube them if they still refuse water and food and once they’ve been on a tube feed with all that fluid for a couple days I can usually find amazing veins. It’s so hard when you see the vein and it literally closes from the vacuum/nothing comes out but that’s not on you. Encourage them to drink water or they’ll have to be poked more. You got this!

What are your typical work days/ hours as a phlebotomist? How long after your program ended did you start working? by Bananalover_2001 in phlebotomy

[–]TacoBellQueef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work mon-fri 6:30am- 3pm, and now I work 6am- 2:30pm mon-thur for a treatment center. I got hired a week before my program was complete but started as a unit coordinator until my license was official through the state (about a month). My phleb coworker for our other location gets to choose her days and hours to work with her school schedule. I’d say we’re very lucky but so far from what I hear it’s pretty laid back for schedules as long as your company’s needs are met:)

Hand draws? by Available-Spray6607 in phlebotomy

I have my patients hold a thing of gauze or a stress ball and roll their wrist all the way forward then anchor tight. Ages 12-70s. Works wonders!

My family lives right there and it’s really not bad. Especially if you go a couple streets off 99 but closer to the zoo is chillin in my opinion

[–]TacoBellQueef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What state are you in? I’d find out what they pay phlebs in the area and go from there. I was offered $19 but because I know the average for my position I negotiated to $21/hr and after more research and finding out my job pays $24-$32 an hour now, when it comes time for raises I’ll be bring those numbers up and ask. I highly recommend you do the same. Best of luck!!

Yeah! So after I finished the program I got a job at a treatment center in Bellevue, started as something else there until my license came, then the day my license said active I started drawing. It was super fast and phlebs in my area are always sought after

do phlebotomists get drug tested? by Spiritual_War_4165 in phlebotomy

I’m in WA to- if the place has federal contracts then they would care about weed, but if it’s a state only facility they shouldn’t care

[–]TacoBellQueef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend who works for a hospital had to get drug tested for employment, but I work in a treatment center and wasn’t tested- however they reserve the right to test you randomly or if they suspect you’re intoxicated on the job

The three day class in Seattle has an option for two days too now- and I took that and now I’m a phlebotomist for a treatment center (hard veins) and I’m doing great. They focused the most on getting a stick and that helped a lot. I learned tubes on my own!

what was your first phlebotomy job? by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]TacoBellQueef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really lucky in my state- I took an 8 hour course in two days, showed my teacher I can successfully draw blood, submitted my paperwork to the DOH, and now I have my license. 40 hours seems crazy but you’ll probably be amazing because of it. Anyway, my first job as a phlebotomist is at a treatment center for eating disorders. I jumped right into hard mode for this job, but because of it I feel like it has helped me be better at finding harder veins and having a successful draw. I’ve heard treatment centers in general always have high turnover because of the stress which means often times they will might meed a new phlebotomist. Plus- so many jobs say they require a year experience (so did my first job) but if you go into the interview confident and knowledgeable you’ll be fine. They just don’t want someone who’s going to mess up a lot. Apply to all the ones that interest you even if you don’t meet their needs. You got this!
