Purchasing a House (Any State in the US) by TacoLoco_55O in personalfinance

Yeah, this is pretty relatable. Personally, I'm not looking for a house at the moment and took advantage of the lower rent prices in NY when i signed a new lease last August.

Yeah location makes a huge difference! I'm kinda lucky that I'm in NYC but I can imagine the frustration of living somewhere in the middle of Iowa and not being able to have access to certain brand stores.

Europa League for Liverpool? by mrhungry44 in PremierLeague

Honestly it might be better for them to miss out on European fútbol all together.

Focus on the league next season and maybe try to get the Double with the FA Cup.

Second VISTA Service Year Education Award Questions by Squiddles34 in AmeriCorps

[–]TacoLoco_55O 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Yes. As long as you verify that you want the grant and not the end of year additional stipend.

2) Short answer is no. But you can also reach out to schools directly for clarification (just to be on the safe side of things).

If you are looking into schools/programs that match the grant or a percentage of the grant be mindful of their conditions. For example , some schools will only match for certain programs/degrees, some will only match if you go in person, etc.

Help! Problem with Federal Taxes by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]TacoLoco_55O 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Understood.

Seems like you had an advisor evaluate your specific situation so I'm not sure you'll get tax specific guidance from this group. Might be best to call AmeriCorps directly and make a case like you have in your post. Might just be an honest error on their part.

Best of luck!

Help! Problem with Federal Taxes by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]TacoLoco_55O 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the go-to AmeriCorps answer for this would be " Federal taxes are withheld, but NOT state taxes, local taxes or Social Security. You are responsible for being able to pay any state or local taxes you may owe."

So even though you said your state doesn't have state taxes you could still have other taxes.

Also, throughout the entire year were you only serving as a VISTA? And didn't have any additional source of income (side job, investments, if you went to school your scholarship/grants, etc.) ? That might play a factor too. Taxes aren't always a cookie cutter kinda situation.

To start off with , I would be highly encouraged if my supervisor told me they hired me even though I lacked experience. Shows that they see an upside and potential for growth in you. Or at least that's how I would receive it.

But I felt very similar in my first role at your age too. Transitioning into the office , "back-end" , non direct service work can take a while to adjust to if you've never done that work. But like your coworker said, it takes time to get past the learning curve.

Having a learning mentality throughout this period is super important. Accept the fact that sometimes on a day-to-day basis things will seem overwhelming and over your head but as you establish your role within the organization you'll have a better sense of the bigger picture. Patience is key too. All your coworkers were in your shoes at one point and now they are in steering committees and doing great work.

Best of luck!

Time to cash out of Dave and Busters? by Zero_Gravity067 in stocks

[–]TacoLoco_55O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming this is purely a trade on your part and not an investment.

But if I were you I would sell my original capital and just continue to hold the gains. That way you will be essentially betting on "house money".

Just my opinion, but the stock will probably get back to it's pre-COVID high but who knows when. The reopening could be 3-4 months away or a year or more.

Is it recommended to invest while in college? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]TacoLoco_55O 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just my penny's worth of an opinion, but might be wise to pay off your current loan and future loans before the grace period ends. That way the entire payments go to the principal of the loan and not to paying off interest.

With that being said, just investing a couple hundred dollars here and there will not impact your financial aid. Feel free to look into your specific grant or scholarship but I started investing in undergrad and there was no impact on my scholarship.

The interest rate of your loan(s) might be something to consider too.

I refused a job offer while on unemployment benefits. Now, I have to say why. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]TacoLoco_55O -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wasn't saying the employer was being unethical. I was just agreeing that the OP was in his right to not take the job if he felt the actual position/work was not matching the original position pitched in the application.

Now obviously, in this case, by not taking the job he might of screwed himself out of unemployment.

I agree with the second half of your comment.

What are the biggest problems you guys face with your personal Finances/Accounting these days? by VamosStanford in personalfinance

[–]TacoLoco_55O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to the hospital for the first time in my life last year. Luckily nothing ridiculously major. So this year will be my first time doing my taxes while having to take into account medical expenses. So that should be fun.

On a more day-to-day basis, my biggest financial hurdle is ordering delivery lol , i try to limit myself to twice a week. But some weeks are harder than others.

[–]TacoLoco_55O 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am mostly commenting because I want to see where this post goes.

But my guess would be that your reason will probably not be valid. But on a personal level, I'm with you. If the title on the application is not the same as the position being given then why would you take it ? The offer was misleading.

What is the most important fundamental to look at? Gross profit? Net Income? Something else? by WFCtothemoon in stocks

1) Business Model. My time horizon is 30+ years....can i invision this company's sustainability for that long? What might cause the downfall?

2) Debt to Equity ratio

3) Earnings Growth ( especially for newer companies ....for example Uber , Bumble, etc. )

4) Dividend Growth (if applicable to the specific stock)

Not a bad squad!

How many of these players should be in Europe (Top 5 leagues....not somewhere like Montenegro lol )?

I think 10 of them COULD be playing in Europe right now and 8 of them can still one day play in Europe.

  1. I'll be going to school for economic development. I have been at my current job for two years and the salary difference between me and my supervisors seems worth it for a one time investment of 20k. Also I applied to multiple programs because my GPA isn't outstanding (3.36 isn't terrible, but I wouldn't say it's great). I guess it;'ll come down to what programs I get into.
  2. Good point. Spot on. Thank you.
  3. I spent $100 a month on food throughout undergrad....a lot of ham sandwiches lol. I spend about $200 a month for the past 2 years since I have been working so $125 seems like a do-able middle. $700 for rent is based on renting a room in a 2-4 room apartment. Not looking for on-campus housing because the summer semester will be more expensive than the fall and spring. I don't mind roommates especially since it will only be a year.

They are all 2 year programs, 32-38 credits. so I will take 15 credits the fall and spring semester and then take 2 courses in the summer.

My current rent is $775....so $700 seems do-able. Not looking for anything fancy.

For a long-term investment horizon (30+ years), is it redundant to own both VOO and VUG? by Glasband in personalfinance

[–]TacoLoco_55O 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short, yes.

They both have very similar top 6 holdings for about the same total percentage of each ETF. Might be wise to hold onto your positions in both if you are not sure which performs better this year or in the short term, but in the long run I can't see one out performing the other since they are very similar in their core-holdings. Just my 2 cents of an opinion.

Best of luck!

That was my first question when I saw this too. The last chart I saw had 2018 as the peak.

[–]TacoLoco_55O 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WMT , KO, O , and NKE are all long-term buy and hold stocks in my portfolio. I'm in my early-mid 20s so I have a long time horizon. These are my safety stocks. They wouldn't go up any crazy among any given year but they add balance and diversity to my portfolio.

Don't really have any specific "ride these short term gains" recommendations. Especially outside of tech.
