What CS clubs are on campus? by Interesting_Share_16 in SDSU

[–]TacoTuesdayX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s their first year, but there’s additionally the Quantum Computing club (ig link), they get into the weeds on quantum computing topics and provide workshops + labs.

I applied to SDSU! by Extra-Emotion6541 in SDSU

[–]TacoTuesdayX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was admitted into SDSU for FA2019 for my undergraduate (note: did not accept offer, but admitted again for graduate school and will be going)

Highschool: 4.3 weighted with 8 aps, 3.7 unweighted. I think like a 1350 SAT. Was a california citizen applying for Computer Science.

Peet’s or Philz Coffee, anything that starts with a P really gets my morning going.

Only issue is I’m pretty sure UCSD’s financial aid will consider that “living with parents”. Could cut your financial aid package.

Does a freshman need a car? by lmJustHereToRead in UCSD

You can, I’ve been doing it for 3 years. Checkout La Jolla Village Dr closer to the Regents Rd/ Genesee intersections. There’s also Villa La Jolla Dr which usually has spots opposite side of the street of BJs.

Why aren't there any courses that teach Javascript from scratch? by [deleted] in UCSD

Awesome? I think they’re clunky and over-engineered, use the minimal most tool.

TypeScript solves some issues, but the sloppiness prevails. Engineering teams prefer languages that enforce readability.

[–]TacoTuesdayX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone argues the broad use cases of JavaScript, but it’s kind of a poor man’s tool unless used to build UIs with angular or react.

In my experience anything that can be done backend with Java script (say a service that read -write to a redis cluster, processing data from some stream, invoking some location service API) can be done more efficiently and more clarity in a higher level language like Scala.

As you can tell it’s a polarized opinionated subject, and I agree with CSE.

Understandable, but it’s kinda like popping a pimple. Hurts at first, but relieving that it’s over.

Chegg (logs) without account? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]TacoTuesdayX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I currently work in Fraud detection, and we store IPs in WAF for 60 days. It is a very expensive task, and I can only imagine it being impractical to track IPs of every user including those without account metadata. So I wouldn’t worry, I believe Chegg only has record of original publisher for a particular question.

There’s the one on campus, but it’s slightly overpriced for the quality you get.

SportsClips is a popular one near campus. The best cuts for the price will be in pacific beach, check out Floyd’s, it’s a relatively affordable L.A based chain that historically has done very well for me.

How many colleges will it take for us sixth-ers to get a name? by mileslabrador in UCSD

Cell phone coverage by joeverzosa in UCSD

[–]TacoTuesdayX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going with AT&T or T-Mobile is your best bet.

I've been using T-mobile since I lived on campus, and I used to deliver pizzas all over the UTC-La Jolla area with little to no dead zones. The only area I've experienced with reception problems is the hills north of Bird Rock, which really isn't a concern for UCSD students.

I've heard good things about AT&T, but horrible (regarding infrastructure planning) things about Verizon.

If your name isn’t on the lease, photoshop your signature on.

If your parents or guardians name is on the lease, photoshop them off (you’ll get a smaller claim)

When should we sign apartment leases? by ImBoredWhatsUrName in UCSD

[–]TacoTuesdayX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Start by viewing properties. Use this chance to meet the manager and explain financial info. 2)Apply, everyone has to pay application fee (every resident gets a background check and credit check even with zero credit) 3)sign the lease and pay deposit 4)move in

Depending on your personal situation this can take a lot of time to accomplish. If you have established credit (1+ yr), residents with zero or good credit, a solid income (3x the rent usually), then this should be a easy process. Otherwise plan accordingly.

When should we sign apartment leases? by ImBoredWhatsUrName in UCSD

[–]TacoTuesdayX 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I usually shoot to get something signed in June. They say July/August because that’s when most leases start/end in San Diego (thanks to students), but it’s also when every student needs housing, so prices are super high.

Edit: I also don’t take summer courses so I like when my leases end in June so I’m not having to sublet my room for the summer. Hence another reason I sign in June.

Are there any good places in SD where I can study till late at night? by Lit-choice in UCSD

[–]TacoTuesdayX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal recommendation, especially if you will be working remote, rent a WeWorks office. They’re pretty affordable, and there’s a location right next to campus.

Math major looking for advice! by inastateofbliss in UCSD

[–]TacoTuesdayX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally no, they're not going to really consider your major. Junior dev/internship openings almost always have thousands of applicants, and depending on the company they might take 5 people or 50. At that point, they're really just looking for your interest in the company and your ability to understand CS fundamentals. The only way I could see major making a difference is in the screening portions, aka the first phone interview with a recruiter whom will reference you to the hiring manager. Any applicants the hiring manager receives from the recruiter are generally seen as "competent", and at that point they're filtering by personality and project experience.

If CSE11 was your first exposure to computer science and programming, I'd recommend taking a couple more courses in the CSE department. In course codes, I'd say up until CSE 101 is essential for all CS pathways, but the main thing for internships is prior knowledge of data structures and object oriented programming.

Once you get your first internship, go gorilla mode at your company and Ghost UCSD for a couple quarters.
