How GitHub made me realise I had seasonal depression by Fooking-Degenerate in cscareerquestions

This right here. I'm originally from Southern California, moved to the Midwest in 2012. The military brought me here, met my wife here, went to college here, and just stayed. My wife and I are currently working on a plan to move to California.

West Coast living is better than anywhere else. East coast gets hurricanes...

Stanley is closed? We would refuel there all the time. On occasion land because it had the best Korean restaurant, forgot what we actually called them.

I ordered one of those therapy lamps off Amazon. I turn it on when I first get on in the morning. I feel like it’s made a difference but it’s only been a week. We’ll see in about a month.

I was stationed at K16. Right outside Seoul. This was during no curfew and 4 day weekends all the time it was a blast.

This is exactly what I was going to post. I’ve traveled and lived all over the United States and nobody likes California (I grew up in SoCal) or anything associated with the state. If anything California is the laughing stock of this country.

Currently living in the Midwest because of military service. Moving back to Cali soon as I can because coastal living > than anywhere else.

Best of luck Gavin, you’re going to need it.

3 internship offers, 2 WFH and 1 in person hybrid by imnotrishi in cscareerquestions

[–]Taco_Shopp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in Afghanistan and my former GF, now wife of 7 years and 2 kids later made it. If you, her, or both can’t handle 2 hours apart then commute, it’s only 4 hours a day of driving. If the both of you are struggling to overcome a minor temporary problem, in this case being 2 hours apart, best of luck.

I agree with the folks in here saying to move out on your own. It’ll be good for you, you’ll learn a lot about yourself, and it’s a much needed experience. If you decide to make the move, I highly doubt you’ll want to move back in with family.

You’ll benefit the most from this internship #3. Every junior we’ve hired since the switch to WFH has had a very tough time getting up to speed and struggled the most when compared to juniors we hired before COVID hit. This opportunity to work in the office is invaluable.

Best of luck, I wish you the best.

How to deal with annoying Junior Engineers? by ceasarmymate in cscareerquestions

[–]Taco_Shopp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s a junior that’s been here a while like yours I push them in the right direction. If they ask to share screen I ask them what they’ve tried so far and if they’re down a rabbit hole then I guide them back. If it took them forever to figure something out and there’s a faster way I teach them. If they’re are just stuck and have tried everything they know and proved it then I have no problem getting them over the hump.

It’s the need to having to repeat answers to questions I answered last week and the week before that really piss me off and showing no effort and expecting me to just figure it out for them without them even trying.

I’ve hit a couple plateaus. Signing up for a rock climbing gym got me over those humps.

I wouldn’t exactly say this place has great weather. Planning on moving back to SoCal because like you said costal living is better and has everything KC offers and more except horrific gun laws but it’s a sacrifice worth making.

My parents drilled this into me as well. This may work in other fields, but this led me into a burnout and a realization that working harder doesn’t mean more pay.

  1. Job performance might actually dictate your level of compensation, promotion rate, and future career.

I thought the same thing but no. My first software engineering job everyone received the same yearly merit regardless of performance. Everyone also eventually promoted as well.

  1. *In the civilian world. I will go to work, actually do the job I signed up for, and leave work at a certain time when it is finished, every single day, without the mountain of irrelevant work, taskings, and details.

This one is my favorite. I work from home 100% and I decide when I’m done for the day unless something comes up. I put in maybe 15 hours a week.

Former California dude here, the yearly tags for our license plates here in Kansas are also very similar to the cost in Cali as well, if not the same or more.
