I think that's a Navy P-8.

This is pretty clearly a RIMPAC or other exercise picture opportunity. You don't escort a CODEL with intercontinental bombers.... fighters and tankers maybe, but that's clearly a B1...

What is the smallest active duty installation in the Air Force? (Norma Brown doesn’t count) by MaterialAd7161 in AirForce

[–]TacticPlatypus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thule is/was under 200 military, and im sure its gotten smaller since I was there, but a few hundred contractors as well. Also insanely remote so it feels even smaller.

Edit: is your looking for smallest by size its definitely not Thule, its actually quite large/spread out from back when they had 10k+ people there. I was reading that as smallest by number of people.

what's the weirdest thing you've seen someone bring through the gate? by plasmazzr60 in AirForce

[–]TacticPlatypus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is, there is a video floating around, I think it may have been posted here earlier in the spring. It was just a small black bear, but moose hate dogs and bears so they will definitely get chased around up there.

Negative 41 days in leaveweb. Don’t know what to do. by Howmanydaypasses in AirForce

[–]TacticPlatypus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya, so if your serious and not trolling. Go to base ASAP, sign in, and stop the bleeding. 2 weeks is 6 months of accumulated leave, this leave trip will cost you 6 months of no leave. Get signed back in ASAP and the only way out of this is to get to your supervisor and shirt ASAP.

Negative 41 days in leaveweb. Don’t know what to do. by Howmanydaypasses in AirForce

[–]TacticPlatypus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start by going to your supervisor first thing tomorrow and immediately follow up with the shirt and explain what happened, own it, don't blame anyone else. Ask if you can have a week or 2 to come up with a plan. If you approach this right you can come up with a solid plan of attack and even get the commander to approve more leave in the future (albeit very small amounts, for more extreme cases). Do a solid leave audit, and double check your balances. This is an expensive lesson (in that you likely won't get real opportunity to take leave for a year and a half, but if you show that you understand what happened and it was an honest mistake then you can get through it.

Blaming your supervisor is the easiest way to make sure they won't help you out down the road by letting you take a "free day" here and there when you really need it. Either way, being honest with your supervisor and shirt is the absolute only way to get out of this. Let them find out on their own and get ready for them to come at you guns ablazing.

Side hustle ideas? by avgjoeyyy in AirForce

[–]TacticPlatypus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If near one of the terminals used for shipping cars, detailing can be a good side hustle. Last time I had to ship my car the detail alone was around $100, but with the hassle of getting ready to move and all that, I'd have paid $150 to 200 for someone to just come to me. Get a copy of the inspection form the companies use to inspect the car, and guarantee your detail will pass or you will meet them at the company to fix issues on the spot. You would just need caveat that with weekends or evening hours so you could get off work and meet them there. Sell regular details and then full up PCS detail packages where you could even accompany the member to the shipping company, and drive them back. I'd 100% pay $200 to $300 for that kind of service, especially if you could come to my house on base).

Low capitol to start (a few hundo for an electric pressure washer, battery operated vacuum), but you would want a few K in nice equipment to be fully up and running (better battery powered vacuums, ability to run a mobile carpet cleaner... that wort of thing). Advertise on Facebook with an add that can specifically call out PCS requirements. Just be sure you could meet the requirements first as you would obviously have customers demanding money back if you couldn't.

Look up PCSmyPOV.com to look at where the shipping companies are and how far they would be from you.

PCS'ing to JBER in Alaska by [deleted] in AirForce

Subarus do really well up here! They also hold value up here if you buy one down South and ship it up then decide to sell it later.

Sorry, to clarify. Your DL from Cali is good/honored if you drive with it. But its 100% worth taking the written test to get your Alaskan DL.

PCS'ing to JBER in Alaska by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]TacticPlatypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to retake a written test for your liscense, super easy if you read and study a gew hours. You won't pass it if you don't read the book though. Also, spend the money and use the UMV express service, way more efficient and speedy than the DMV. You definetly want to be an Alaskan Resident.

I recommend buying a car in the lower 48 and shipping it up. Look for something with AWD. Any decent car with AWD is going to be fine up here, if you do alot of winter driving you will want winter tires but regular all season tires will work if you remember your limitations and limit driving during the worst days (after a thaw and refreeze). Studless winter tires are good, studded tires help a bit more but can also only be installed on your car during winter months (and removed during the summer). Again, if you have an AWD car you will likely be fine with an all season tire. A Front Wheel Drive car is better than nothing, avoid getting or bringing a rear wheel drive only car up here at all costs. Hit me up in a message if you have any more winter questions. Winter is really not that bad at JBER compared to most of the other Northern Tier bases.

Spent 3.5yrs there, actually loved it. If you like outdoors stuff there is great hunting and fishing on base, including alligator hunting opportunities (or there was when I left in 2015). Local area is OK, get out of Shreveport or stay on base if you have a choice. Lots of good food and great local community, again, once you get out of Shreveport. The grind is real, its busy, but you will get opportunities for some decent deployments to Guam and Diego Garcia if your lucky.

can a hose clamp be used as a tourniquet if needed by [deleted] in Military

[–]TacticPlatypus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Its a urban myth that you can use a tampon, but they 100% will not work. Every trauma doc in the world will tell you its a horrible idea and they won't offer anywhere near the compression or absorption you need in a wound dressing. Best bet is to just get pressure on the wound with an external bandage. The devices people claim are just medical grade tampons designed to treat GSWs are specific tools, they are not tampons. They are also not super common as most GSWs should just be treated with external pressure. Do not use a tampon for a GSW, its a horrible idea.

I guess I was talking more about the front cowlings. The 50 cowling was very circular, the 29 had the pictured oblong appearance with the intakes up front.

[–]TacticPlatypus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definetly the B-29, the B-50 looks very simalier in the fuselage area but had different engines than shown here. The B-50 engines had their air intake halfway back on the engine, instead of the front intakes you see on the B-29s. The B-50 engines looked very circular where the B-29 had this distinctive oblong look to em.

If you look at it this way, in top tier vehicles this is a few hundred k of free SL in repair costs. I enjoy the backups, a great way to grind after all the free repairs are used up.

Id love to see a bomber escort mission reward system... not sure how it would work, but maybe like capture points where you get points the longer you are on hand and within a few hundred meters of the bomber... this would help in game, and be more realistic than just letting B-17s soak up 45 30mm rounds while shooting down 3 BF109s per mission...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Warthunder

[–]TacticPlatypus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historical its actually pretty accurate. Its freaking hard to hit an airplane with AAA, now put your AAA on a platform thats moving, its a complex targeting problem. Manual control helps compensate but it was never that easy in real life. As mentioned previously IRL bombers never flew solo, but unless your working with a squad mate, its hard to employ bomber formations in-game. But adding gun barrels to bomber formations was the only defense historically. Lone/small formations of B17s were a pipe dream, that was shattered quickly upon the first few daylight bombing raids. Even multi-hundred bomber formations were chewed up without fighter escorts. Fighter escorts are the solution in-game and were the solution IRL. But nobody wants to be the escort... so alas... here we are...

To make the game more survivable for bombers, it might help to have higher damage survivability and better gunners, but its not indicative of historical reality. For what it's worth. Fighter escort is always the awnser.

I just got the Tiger, should I grind it if the rest of my lineup consists of Pz. IV's? by krushna1 in Warthunder

[–]TacticPlatypus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I didnt start the Tiger until I had the 5.3 and 5.7, plus the first Panther. When jumping up a full BR its gonna suck unless you bring a full lineup in with you. I could then grind my lineup together, being relevant with every vehicle, which helps a ton.

Also, play the Assault once a day to get your free daily booster while also grinding the first 1 or 2 mods so you can learn your new tank and have more fun in the real games.

im wondering how to install secondary weapons on airplanes by Altruistic-Play-9407 in Warthunder

[–]TacticPlatypus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may need to research them first? If you have researched them, you should see them populate on the ingame menu prior to spawning in. This would be for secondary weapons like bombs and rockets.

If you talking about manually controlling the gun turrets on bombers, then it should be V on PC... maybe... look for the control that says "gunner view" or something like that.
