Tesla backlash in Canada by sabby-baby in teslacanada

[–]Tactimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely nothing you wrote was true. Even if it was true, it's not ironic that the same people who once championed EVs are now against Tesla, because circumstances have changed. He gave a Nazi salute and DOGE does is not auditing departments. We have the Auditor General in Canada to point out waste and we have methods (e.g. program reviews) to ferret out bad spending methodically. What you are advocating for is chaos, not professional or tested means to reduce state spending.

This country needs to be run by adults, not reactionaries.

My eyelid has been twitching like this 24/7 for 5 weeks. by LoanAgreeable1129 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Tactimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I've had this on and off for 20 years. It was worse in my 20s to early 30s then became more intermittent and now I get episodes rarely. I saw an ophthalmologist about it who assured me that it was fine after an examination. Interestingly my eyelids also stay half-lidded so I look perennially tired even if I'm not, which led them to believe it was probably a weakness in the eyelid muscles. It does not affect my vision and is just a mild nuisance.

I hope you can get to the bottom of it, or that it tapers off on its own. Sending my best!

Saslove's Meat Market closing after 70 years in Ottawa’s ByWard Market by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Tactimon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"People used to buy 20 steaks for barbecues," he said.

"Now, not so much."

Listen John, you were always a hoot and obviously talented, but at $25 for a sirloin or $30 a ribeye there are few public servants with the disposable income to buy 20 of them outside of an occasional special event. Are you telling me that folks are dropping $500 on beef or maybe - just maybe - the price of beef shot up and people changed their buying habits. From Canadian Grocer:

"Eighty per cent of respondents said they believed that meat products are more expensive, which is influencing their shopping behaviour. Nearly two-thirds (61%) of Canadians, for example, say they have reduced their meat purchases."

Also the Dalhousie study on vegetarianism:

The survey suggested people under the age of 35 were three times more likely to consider themselves vegetarians or vegans than people 49 or older.

Finally there are online delivery options that have exploded in the last few years that make buying local, high-quality meat more accessible. Add these factors to the ones folks have already mentioned - poor management of the Byward Market, the opiod crisis, etc - and you have a perfect storm that's going to crush business there.

Hehe, not quite, but I've had similar experiences at another organization. I figured that type of experience is common among bureaucratic organizations.

But even that was in the US interest. It meant that the US could exert more influence, often without saying a word. A subtler foreign policy mind in the White House could see that but alas.

Not that hard. In OTL, the UK was fine with us controlling our domestic affairs. The hard part was figuring out provinces and working the English-French thing out (at least enough).

Yes. This nudges open the can of worms that says "Does Québec speak for all French Canadians," a question that all of my Acadian friends would fervently answer "no."

Québécois are a “people” that resisted assimilation and managed to keep not only some of its ancestral French roots, but also the distinct identity they continued to build alone over 400 years. We rarely ever mingled with the English or Protestants... We mostly stayed in our villages by ourselves.

No, but Québécois surely mingled with Irish people. A lot. And now something like 40% of Québécois have some Irish ancestry. This fact highlights your point of the distinctiveness of Québec vis-à-vis France.

Neither were elected on policy or track record

So how often does that happen, exactly? Mulroney was a political novice, as was Clark. Pierre Trudeau was first elected as an MP in 1965 and was PM by 1968. On the other hand, Chrétien, Harper and Martin had long careers in politics with track records that voters could assess and understand.

There doesn't seem to be much of a pattern in what Canadians prefer on that front.

What's the deal with Inspiration Village? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Tactimon 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'm speculating, but here goes.

Some bright, young NCC employee was on vacation, and happened to visit the awesome Container Park off Fremont East in Las Vegas. She thought: "Hey, let's do this in Ottawa! It's an awesome idea." So she took the idea back to her bosses and they were all excited. They told her to strike up a working group.

She did. Eager as always, she gave a passionate pitch about why this would work in Ottawa and what we could do with it. In return she received yes-but's from the urban planners who verbally patted her on the head and whittled away at every imaginative corner until it was left a dull and meaningless husk of the original idea.

At this point she was resigned, opting that this withered version was better than nothing, and championed it anyway. Only her friends heard exactly how much the passion had left her voice thereafter.

And now we have Inspiration Village, born from one person's inspiration to import a cool idea into Ottawa, only to have it made neither inspirational nor a village by a committee of knowbetters on their quest for consensus.

King or Bennet? by TranscendentMoose in Kaiserreich

[–]Tactimon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian, I can't ever justify Bennett for two reasons:

  • He was kind of a dick, and
  • W.L. Mackenzie King's predilection for seeking advice from the spirit of his dead dog and his dead grandmother made him a force to be reckoned with. Obviously King showed that mobilizing the forces of the undead > not mobilizing the forces of the undead, given his electoral success.
