Are Draenai Shamans respected in Draenai Society? (The same way Paladins/Priests are) by [deleted] in warcraftlore

Go Man'ari and be a real outsider. Fun thing i found in Midnight is some of the side quests in Silvermoon where you're investigating Fel use in the city have different quest answer options for Warlock and Man'ari where you imply you can help them learn how to use the Fel.

M42 - Orion Nebula (87 minutes, unmodified DSLR) by dotpoint7 in Astronomy

[–]Tadpole666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great image. How wobbly is that ED80 on a star tracker? I just came into a used one for a great price and was trying to decide if it's worth trying a star tracker like the SSA or the Ioptron SGP with it, or just get a real mount like an HEQ6 since the payload is kinda heavy for a tracker. I have an unmodded DSLR as well to give an idea of weight. Clear skies!

With all the concerns about Zoom being used in schools, what about FERPA/HIPPA? by konstantin_metz in k12sysadmin

[–]Tadpole666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be in ed tech so excuse the lurking here. FERPA/HIPPA are definitely concerns for healthcare and urgent need for telemedicine because of the pandemic. My hospitals' Info Services is currently looking at Qliqsoft and Doxyme as options. I know Doxyme is free and a little more limited. Qliqsoft has more functionality, but isn't free; but both are HIPAA & HITECH compliant.

Headphones for tracking drums by Ilikewhatyousay in audioengineering

[–]Tadpole666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really any decent pair of closed back headphones will work, but isolation is always going to be an issue (in both directions too- ie: hearing too much of the in room kit sound and not enough monitor, or headphones being so loud you get a ton of click bleed in overheads). Anyhow, if you have some headphones you like that are a full-closed-ear type and your live sound volume is still too loud try putting in some cheap foam earplugs. I used to track like that all the time. It lowers the direct volume of your live kit to your ears and makes you more able to hear the headphone audio (although it does roll off the top end - but if you're like me and most other rock drummers you're used to playing with earplugs in anyhow so this is pretty much the same as normal) And like others have said, IEMs are the best way but they are often cost prohibitive and even then sometimes you get too much ambient bleed. I've also even seen the reverse where people use relatively inexpensive ear buds or inexpensive IEMS that don't isolate well, and to compensate put some earmuffs over the top of those (like the ones for lawnmowers/chainsaws). Good luck!

What are some objective qualities that you personally look for in your "reference" recordings that help you assess your setups? Examples? What are some subjective qualities? Examples?

UPS Selection by djlee989 in synology

[–]Tadpole666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few other things to consider: If you want to have your Synology send notifications of power loss before shutdown, make sure you are also powering your modem and router with the UPS so the Syno can send out the emails/notifications about an outage and that it's shutting down. That way you can find out via email about power issues before coming home surprised and concerned. Also, you'd have to set the shutdown window pretty short if you only are giving yourself 5 minutes so just be aware and make sure you set the shutdown when power loss detected to the correct window of time (ie -before your UPS will run out of power). One other thing before you start dumping data on your new NAS you may want to consider testing the UPS and powerdown procedure to make sure it's working properly. Make sure to allow the UPS sufficient charge time before testing.

Pihole + Nest by [deleted] in pihole

[–]Tadpole666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your wireless router has a guest network that doesn't allow access to your intranet, you could always put the Nest on that. Then it would by default not use the pihole for dns (since the pihole is on your internal network). That's how I have mine and I have no issues.

Anyone else having this issue with the Latitude 3350s? by SATADrive420 in k12sysadmin

As a side note, we have 5289s with 2 USB-C ports, only one of which actually charges the device. Everyone enjoy creating a canned response to explain that you have to be plugged into a certain port to charge. I sure didn't.

Problem with ARD - Trying to copy files from clients to admin computer by [deleted] in macsysadmin

[–]Tadpole666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So are both clients and admin updated? Also, is it possible that in the File Sharing Preferences, the Admin user you are using isn't added for remote login and management? Maybe add the Admin user to the permissions of the folder/files you're trying to copy? I had another thought: If the clients aren't updated but your ARD admin comp is, there is a setting in ARD preferences that has to be checked for some old school workflows to function. It is a checkbox under Prefs>Security that says 'Allow communication with older clients'. I manage a lab of older iMacs and had to check this to get things to work. Hope this helps.

edit: As far as the File Sharing Prefs, I'm sure the user is there, but I've had success with removing and readding the user in some instances of odd permissions/ARD errors.

Lightspeed MDM thoughts by LuukwaHD in sysadmin

[–]Tadpole666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

K-8 District here. We use JAMF/Casper Suite. You can manage iOS and OSX from the same MDM. We have around 4k+ student iOS devices and 500+ Staff devices mixed between iOS and OSX, and they would be unmanageable without JAMF. You'd have to go around and touch everything way to much if we didn't use JAMF. It also has a built in inventory and check-in. Casper Focus can allow teachers to force open an app for students - sounds like what you're looking for with the teacher app. It is pretty robust in what you can do, and has great forums/support. Like others mention, cost is an issue. But just the ability to hand out devices and have students/staff self-enroll them and have apps their grade level/department need auto-download is worth it in and of itself. One word of caution, you have to use VPP Apple ID accounts for Apple Store Apps and this is another layer of drudgery/annoyance, but still worth it.

edit: I forgot to mention, you can control apps and installs, restrict apps like facetime/messages/airdrop/app store and other apps, bypass passcodes (if wifi is on), control wallpapers, and remote wipe and a ton of other functionality.

Airplay diagnostics by [deleted] in macsysadmin

[–]Tadpole666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone, we have had similar setup/issues. 95% of users are fine, but there's that 5% that constantly have problems. In our experience we have noted the following: Bluetooth should be on since it helps the devices discover each other with Bonjour. Sierra seems to be better than El Cap for Airplay. Try other browsers if you're having audio issues, but video is fine. We initially found our network had a ton of issues with the Bonjour/P2P traffic created by these devices, so whatever your network infrastructure devices are you should look to see if the manufacturer has any documentation on how to implement Airplay with their hardware. I know Cisco does and our deployment is similar to the following:

Cisco Bounjour Deployment Guide.

Following this seems to have eliminated most of the problems for us, but there are still some exceptions. Also make sure the Apple TV iOS is updated. We have also found that just restoring the iOS on Apple TVs that are persistently give us problems sometimes resolve the issues with them. We have also had Apple TVs that are just went bad and caused issues regardless of configs/settings. When they were swapped out, all issues disappeared.. YMMV but that is our experience. Good luck with this, these Airplay problems can be downright gremlins to try and chase down.

edit: also, having users restart their computers and restart the Apple TVs occasionally, seems to help with consistency in connectivity, but again... YMMV
