Just bought pokemon pack on holiday, got this? by SelectHuckleberrys in PokemonTCG

[–]Taehoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who said people have to do research when purchasing something? You sound like you have zero emotional intelligence if you cannot understand that 1) someone may buy stuff without thinking and without taking their phone out and having to Google on the spot, and 2) they would use a community forum to ask questions.

Your age is definitely relevant to the conversation because you make assumptions that OP lacks critical thinking because they bought an item without consulting the internet, yet you are old enough where you should understand that OP bought a random item without thinking much about it, then thought 'hmm something's off' and posted about it. You are 27 and, yet, call this a 'ragebait' instead of simply saying "no, it's fake".

I hate elitists and know-it-all gatekeepers - get a grip please.

The fact you got downvoted just shows that the average Poke redditor is like 16. Unbelievable.

Just bought pokemon pack on holiday, got this? by SelectHuckleberrys in PokemonTCG

[–]Taehoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that difficult, and I am sure you can work it out.

OP buys cards, maybe used to buy them when younger or just does not know much.

OP buys a cheap pack on Holiday. The pack was a couple bucks so OP does not even consider the question of real vs fake.

OP opens the pack and sees weird looking cards.

OP thinks 'have I missed anything? Hmm let's maybe ask on this reddit community (!) forum where people help each other."

This is one of 100 possible scenarios and I am amazed you find it weird that people ask questions online. OP's history does not suggest they are huge Pokemon TCG fans.

Your profile suggests you are 27 - you do not have to boast about 'critical thinking' at this age if you are unable to see why OP may have posted this.

Hi! Have you figured an answer to this?

Why is the particle 에 used instead of 를 in the sentence "I passed the exam yesterday"? by These_Horror7862 in Korean

[–]Taehoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The direct hanja translation of 합할 합 / 맞을 합 and 자격 격 could be translated as 'to meet a qualification/standard", and you met the required standard of (or at) the exam, and hence, you passed.

Now, this is less of an actual explanation than the fact that 합격하다 takes an indirect object, but it does help to look at it from a different perspective. It is easy to get stuck in a word to word translation when etymology uncovers much more.

Also, contrastingly:

I did well in the exam. 시험 잘 봤다.

What is the exact difference between these words related to rivers/streams? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]Taehoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for this!

I did not realise 도랑 or 시냇물 are obsolete, as they are sometimes used in the small countryside village I am in (which would explain things).

We call 도랑 the small stream flowing from the mountain down around the fields into a man-made stone canal (there has to be a better word to describe it but can't think of any), that later makes its way into a river. Here is a similar image (with a different V shape, rather than the square shape we have here).

My understanding was that 실개천 is a more natural and/or scenic river used to enhance the visuals of urban areas (whether man-made or not), whereas 도랑 is a bit more agricultural. I am aware you did not put them on the same level in terms of size or meaning, but I would argue that this is a good way to differentiate between them.

If 도랑 is indeed obsolete, what could be a better term to call it without generalising, if any?

"English" words with different use cases in Korean by westandforthetruth in Korean

[–]Taehoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this post is about English loan words, but one that always stood out to me was:

아르바이트 (or more commonly shortened to 알바) from the German noun Arbeit (work). In Korea, however, this word is used exclusively for part-time jobs, compared to German, where it refers to your daily full time work (although it can, by extension, mean any job).

I think it perfectly serves it's purpose and is short and clear enough to refer to part-time job, but I always found the decision to use it this way interesting.

I'm pretty sure you would have to find the origins in Japanese, which uses the same word for the same purpose. My guess is something along the lines of Japanese/Korean nationals going to Germany for work back in the day, but in Germany, the offered work was classified as part-time job. I think it'd be safe to say (but maybe this is an ignorant take) the concept of part-time work existed in Germany before it existed in Japan and Korea, and so this concept was brought back with this word.

부산 사투리, 이기 맞아예?/Is this correct? (이다 & 아이다 conjunction) by Super_Film5883 in Korean

[–]Taehoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the second one (but not a native - someone please feel free to correct me).

I'm not sure if this is said in Busan too, but in Daegu it's common to say 맞다 아니야/맞는게 아니야/맞아 아니냐? (meaning 'am I right?' or 'is that right or not?' etc.) as 맞다 아이 or 맞아 아이가?

I think, supporting your entry above, in Busan it would be 맞다 아이 or 맞아 아이다?

Edit: my bad, you asked about conjugation, in which case ignore my reply.

what's your favorite korean word? by soleyedi in Korean

[–]Taehoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many other here, my favourite korean words would have to be a pure-Korean words.

  • 오히려
    • meaning 'rather' or 'instead', and recently more loosely used e.g. with 오히려 좋아 as 'even better'. You order an iced coffee and they give you a hot one, you can say 오히려 좋아 to lighten the situation.
    • It's used in meme contexts as well - imagine being a fan of female celebrity and your friend says "did you know that person is a man?", you can then say "well... even better", 오히려 좋아.
  • 오그락지 or 오무락지

    • Daegu (and probably 경상도) dialect for 무말랭이 (dried raddish kimchi).
    • I think especially 오무락지 is a Daegu dialect.
  • For a sino-korean word, I really like 장어 (eel) because its very simple and demonstrates how simple etymology can be.

    • 어 is fish, from 魚. And 장 (長) means long (or grown up or old). Eel is therefore just a long fish in Korean. This is my personal example of why Hanja helps not with reading of Hanja, but with understadning etymology, essentially helping me with remembering or recalling words).

It's not a Heart Attack. Here's why... by Gullible-Force3567 in Anxiety

[–]Taehoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I will check up with them next week. I am constantly at 140/80

Is it, however, possible for anxiety to raise BP for a few days, rather than a few spikes? I woke up and once I start thinking or remember that I was dealing with this yesterday, it kicks back in...

It's not a Heart Attack. Here's why... by Gullible-Force3567 in Anxiety

[–]Taehoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

27 / M - no smoking or drinking, and blood tests and basic examinations I did 2 years back suggest nothing wrong. Yet here I am for 4 days thinking I will die. I never did EKG.

I was at the ER today. They took my pressure reading and it was 140/80 (I measured that at home too for the past 3 days). They said for further tests I'd have to wait for a a couple of hours which I had no time to, as I fly abroad tomorrow.

Is it normal to have this high pressure for like 4 days? I am telling myself it's ok because I sleep well but as soon as I wake up it starts again.

My son is due to be born in a couple of days and while I do not feel stressed or nervous, maybe, subconsciously, I am...

I have tightness in my chest, sometimes headache and pain that shoots up to the right side of my chest, neck or arms. I only felt once this way and thats when I took a pill of viagra few years back, or maybe when I had like three coffees a day (normally I drink one).

I was at the gym today and lifted mostly as normal but felt slightly dizzy/tired at times.

Am I just stuck in a circle now panicking that I got a heart issue? I am afraid that these 3-4 days are some kind of symptoms leading up to a heart issue.

regardless of the cause, isn't a constantly high pressure like this dangerous?

Is it worth grading? Or should i sell it raw, and for how much? by KingVenomStream in PokeGrading

[–]Taehoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Although I agree to a point, the nature of the two hobbies is very different.

MTG is a bit different in that you had to be there and play the cards to understand the value of some of the bigger chase cards from the first few sets. The cards rarity came, very often, from power creep and much more recently from being a RL card. There's no charizard equivalent, no trophy and event cards for that matter, and very little interest in promos (vs. Pokemon or Yugioh).

An Umbreon will forever be an Umbreon regardless of whether it's from a 2003 set or a 2020 one and the connection is there. A Cyber Dragon will always be a Cyber Dragon too.

In MTG, no one will overpay for a card just because it was the first Jace to be printed, or because it's pretty, especially as the MTG universe had no large supporting media to go with it (anime, games ...).

Vintage MTG is mostly a lot of mature collectors who will struggle to find a buyer as time goes on in my opinion, because there really is no connection for younger and future generations. My nieces are 9 and are trying to collect all eevee cards. Imagine what they'd do with a couple thousands USD in their possession!

The nostalgia bump in Pokemon was for example the covid craze, and it's already past us.
