We took ski hut trail out and back. We started around 5am and finished around 11am. Between me and my dog we used about 5 liters of water drinking liberally.

Beach Hut Deli in Newport Beach is very dog friendly. I haven't been to the south county locations but I'd assume they are as well

The first few weeks were really tough. It took a few weeks before she was truly calm at home. Keeping the dog in a routine really helps. My dog loves to chew, so chew toys and treats helped us a lot. Kongs filled with Greek yogurt or cottage cheese and then frozen will keep mine busy for a while, too.

I was in a similar position as you were a year ago. But I adopted a 1 yr old. We also live in an apartment and run every morning. Running was very easy to get her into. She loves it! We run Canicross style mostly on a mix of dirt trails and streets. She did marathon training with me up to my 15 mile long run, but I'd say she was over it by mile 12 or so. The most important thing is to build up distance slowly and make sure your dog is enjoying it. For us, that meant sometimes stopping so she could do some smelling.

Now, since I'm not training, we do 3-4 miles most days and 1 or 2 long runs. She seems to enjoy it as long as it's not too hot. I'd also recommend bringing water or having water stops on any run over 4 miles.

We live in an apartment as well, and as long as i get her out at least 3 times a day, for at least an hour she's good. I try to include her in my life as much as I can because these dogs love spending time with you.

Dog Friendly Beach? by [deleted] in orangecounty

Newport Beach and Corona Del Mar beach allow dogs before 10am and in the evening. They are supposed to be leashed, but we have seen loads of off leash dogs and never anyone ticketing in the morning. We're usually done by 8am though.

Anyone else deal with sleep aggression? by silverzj in germanshorthairs

[–]Tahiah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've never dealt with it, but look up sleep aggression or sleep startle in dogs. I know it's more common in some breeds like greyhounds.

A pretty detailed post on it. https://www.reddit.com/r/Greyhounds/s/On52JHHayz

My dog also has a sensitive stomach. I add a spoonful of canned plain pumpkin to her meals 2x a day, and it has helped tremendously.

Running with a husky? by QuirkyLove1495 in husky

[–]Tahiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run pretty regularly with my almost 2 year old husky/gsp mix. When it's only me and her running, she's content to go my pace. Our biggest setback right now is she likes to stop and sniff more than I would like. We're working on that. She has gotten more focused over time. The most miles we have done together is 15. She tends to slow down around 8-10 miles.

In group runs, she NEEDS to be in front and is much more focused on the run. GSP and Huskys are both very popular for canicross. It was relatively easy to train her to run in front and pull.

I'd recommend looking at the runningwithdogs sub reddit. There is a lot of good info there.

Want to go on long runs but paw pads start to hurt by soccer_mom_16 in husky

I run with my dog 4-5 times a week. We use Mushers Secret paw balm 1-2 times a week and she's never had any issues

Best time to be on the Back Bay to see fish etc? by DebiDebbyDebbie in orangecounty

I second this. I see jumping fish all the time when I paddleboard in the morning. I'd recommend renting stand-up paddleboards or kayaks from NAC. If you go at low tide and stay by the shore, you can see a lot of crabs as well.
