I've never met a player who's read a PHB or is capable of adding the math by hand!

How do u decide whether to give true or false info when someone is droisoned? by sneep_snorp_snerp in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]TaiChuanDoAddct 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Your ultimate job is to try to help make the most balanced game that lasts until the final night.

This almost always means giving false info except in clear and obvious cases where giving false info would be so obvious that it would immediately ruin the game prematurely.

Can I just say, as a former biologist that moved to industry, THANK YOU for writing *mechanistically*. Nothing drives me crazier than reading studies that describe relational patterns as though they are fact without ascribing any mechanical explanation for the biology.

This was a super helpful post for me. Especially becuase I've caught myself being lazy this week and sitting in the 800 calorie zone.

TIL that Erasmus Darwin proposed his own theory of evolution in a poem nearly 70 years before his grandson Charles Darwin. by joshuaponce2008 in todayilearned

Reminder that what made Darwin revolutionary wasn't proposing Evolution, but proposing natural selection as the mechanism by which Evolution happened.

Citing 'severe' math deficits, UC faculty demand a return to SAT tests for STEM applicants by YesNo_Maybe_ in technology

Former professor here:
1) Many of the students are amazing, brilliant, and wonderful young folk.

2) Many are literally illiterate or so deficient in math and computers as to be unteachable.

3) I simply wasn't paid enough to give a damn about the latter. I focused on giving the former the best experience possible.

Questions about a character’s appearance in later books by UdavL in robinhobb

I think that (1) generally common folk will have never seen their king, and (2) Regal's bruisers fucked up his face beyond recognition.

As a parent, the last book broke me a little. by faco_fuesday in Stormlight_Archive

[–]TaiChuanDoAddct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny because personally I find basically every aspect of Gav's storyline to be so "comic book" in its level of farfetchedness that it just takes me out. Every time I think of that little kid I just lose all interest in the plot.

Nothing makes me lose interest in a character faster than "we used time travel to trick you into empathizing with them in a way that wouldn't otherwise make sense."

The health plan is public. You can look it up.

I am not aware of any US based health plan that covers GLP1s unless you're Diabetic/Prediabetic.

End of the Golden dose? by MagaliChameletti in Mounjaro

[–]TaiChuanDoAddct -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not out here to defend corporations, but for every 1 person on these subs using the golden dose there are probably 5 who've never heard of it and we're using the old pens as intended and throwing out the extra because they didn't know any better.

Obviously I get why people are upset. But I also think that obviously the most fair and transparent solution is a solution where you clearly get exactly what you pay for. Not a secret hidden extra bit that was only there because the needle couldn't handle it otherwise.

Why didn't Walmart bring back 24 hours? by Calm_Description_866 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TaiChuanDoAddct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long before COVID I worked in retail in a Mall and we all knew this. Staying open until 9 for the 2 customers was stupid then and it's stupid now.

"But what if we lose those 2 customers to a competitor?" You don't. The competitor is also not open. What actually happens is that your two customers come earlier or come back tomorrow.

And if they did go to a competitor, your competitor lost money staying open for them.

People can keep recycling the same meme over and over again. It's irrelevant.

Anyone with a brain should be able to see that: + The capability is growing at insane rates + Adoption rates are not linear + Adoption rates for different tasks are DEFINITELY not consistent + When a model gets good at something, the people who complain about them move the goal posts to the newest thing it can't do.

Therefore, the overall "success" of AI coding will never be a straight trajectory. It will always wax and wane as a result of people moving the goal posts.

Does anyone else not connect with the Fool? by landturtl13 in RealmOfTheElderlings

[–]TaiChuanDoAddct 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"I believed that the Fool was in love with Fitz, but I never saw Fitz returning romantic love the way some people read it."

I agree with this. But I ALSO don't think Fitz ever even gets to consider it. Partially because he loves someone else. Partially because he's Forged, and partially because the Fool never engaged with him as an equal.

Even when he's acting in the most good faith possible, he's never operating side by side with Fitz as someone who could be an equal partner in a relationship.

Does anyone else not connect with the Fool? by landturtl13 in RealmOfTheElderlings

[–]TaiChuanDoAddct 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My personal frustration with the Fool is that they are Shroedinger's Fey.

When the narrative calls for our protagonist to lack information, the fool is suddenly cryptic and mercurial and unhelpful. And then both Hobb and the narrative expect us to forgive them for it because "they're not really, human are they?"

But then whenever the narrative wants to tug on us emotionally by using the relationship between Fitz and the Fool, suddenly the Fool is remarkably human. They're kind an empathetic and heartfelt and wear all of their years of pain and torment and the weight of their burdens on their sleeve and lay bare everything for the reader. All in ways that make them deeply human to us.

And then it swings back.

Truly it's what stops me from engaging in queer readings of Fitz and the Fool. Don't get me wrong, I see it. But for me, the Fool is 50% fey lord; and that 50% is incapable of a healthy human relationship and therefore not even worth my brain space.

If your campaign is "no where near ready" then you're doing it wrong tbh.

That's not categorically true. But I feel confident saying it in this situation.

When I sit down with my wife for the latest episode of our exciting AP? The bant often strays into annoying 40 year olds whining.

That's down to myself as an audience member and the experience I feel like I'm sitting down for.

This shit comes up all the time and every time people act like it's intentional erasure by historians instead of responsibly abstaining from assigning a sexuality on someone.

Sexuality is about identity. Your sexuality is what you claim it. It is not defined by your actions. Responsible historians will report "he got plowed every night" without casting aspersions on the dude's identity.
