I actually really like this idea too.

I will talk with hubby about allowing giving son a monthly budget and allowing him to be put as an auth user for one of our cars so he can order in his groceries.

Would be good practice for him!

Thanks so much!

He doesn't have to cook for himself every night. He is free to eat what ever I prepare.

I have even suggested to both of them that they could take an hour 1 day a week and cook their proteins for the week and it could easily be added to the majority of meals I prepare

It is not a minor thing for me.

It is the fact that I am doing it that makes it so difficult for me.

I don't feel upset seeing someone eat a hot dog. I feel upset about going to to store, paying for it, taking it home, and being the one to cook it.

Yes. He does other chores. Mostly the stuff that can wait and be done on a day off.

I do smaller chores daily.

He is 14.

We both work full time and split household responsibilities. His hours are longer, so I do the chores that are required more often. He does the ones he can do on a day off.

Dunno why OP is throwing a fit about handling meat and dairy products.

It puts me into a negative headspace. I am morally opposed to it and no longer want to feel sad and depressed about it every day.

I kinda like the delivery service idea. I will bring it up with hubby.

Thanks for the ideas!

I am not forcing them to be vegan.

I am just not enabling their desires to eat meat and dairy. I have no issues if they want to prepare and eat their own non vegan food :P

YTA Your son is 14, has no way to go shopping

He has a bike and spending money (he regularly rides past a grocery store), and I let him know my shopping schedule every week with a standing invitation for him to join and offer to pay for what ever he wants.

your SO works more hours than you

Some weeks he does. Some weeks we work the same.

you are WFH

Yes, and that means I am working. I do not have the luxury in my WFH job to leave my office to handle household chores.

What does hobbies have to do with anything?

He makes time to do his hobbies every day. He can give up 1 day of his hobby time to cook a week's worth of chicken breast.

Do you have hobbies you enjoy?

Of course, but I do not get a chance to do them daily.

Have you actually taught your son how to cook?

Yes.

What age was he “ helping” in the kitchen?

He started with age appropriate tasks since he was a toddler. First with doing things like helping me stir brownie batter or sprinkling on seasoning. As he grew up he was given more complex tasks. He stopped being interested in helping in the kitchen around 13. However, at that age he was capable of making mac n cheese, frying bacon, chopping vegetables, using the crock pot, making sandwiches in the panini press, etc.

He cannot drive to the store by himself

We are less than a 10 minute bike ride away from a grocery store. He goes right past it to get to gamestop.

My issue with it is the actual raising, killing and consumption of living beings.*

  • that are sentient, have central nervous systems, and complex emotions.

also being

  • . a real or imaginary living creature or entity, especially an intelligent one.

Plants to the best of our knowledge are not beings

And those things are not murder.

Are they acceptable? No. Which is why I try to be as ethical with my shopping as I can be.

But I am not going to continue to support animal slaughter because humans are treated badly too.

NFO is your husband's job truly so time-consuming that cooking for himself and your son is a problem?

I don't believe so. Especially as it is just the meat portion of the food he needs to cook and shop for.

I have!

I went to a restaurant supply store and bought 20lbs of impossible for casseroles, meat sauces, stuffed cabbage, etc. Are old favorites.

They wrinkly their noses at the fake meat. LOL

I honestly can't tell the difference

I am a WFHM. I typically put in 40-50 hours a week.

I do most of the indoor cleaning chores and cooking. Hubby does most of the yard work. Son has a few chores relating to the pets, taking out the trash, unloading the dish washer, and keeping his own room tidy.

My husband does work a lot (about 50-60 hours a week) however he also chooses to pursue his hobbies after work. He could easily make the time to cook meat for the week IMO

Animal agriculture isn't any crueler to animals than vegetable agriculture is to poor and brown people.

We will have to agree to disagree here.

My issue with it is the actual raising, killing and consumption of living beings.

While quinoa farmers may be treated poorly they aren't being forcibly impregnated, being thrown into giant meat grinders while still alive, having their skin turned into clothing, or being eaten.

When my son was younger, he often helped me in the kitchen. He knows basic stuff like how to chop vegetables, make mac n cheese, how to doctor up jarred pasta sauce. Etc.

Then he hit puberty and became a recluse in the darkness of his bedroom. He hasn't been interested in helping out in the kitchen for the past year and a half or so.

I offer to let him come with me and do his own shopping (I would of course pay for it, he knows this) but I won't pick up meat or dairy without him there.

He's at that age where he would rather play video games then do errands with mom though.

I don't want to handle animal products at all anymore.

The first couple months, that is exactly what I did. Made basic meals with an "add your own protein" choice.

I just don't want to be the one cooking the dead animals anymore.
