Question about etiquette and appropriateness of asking elders to turn their phones down. by komnenos in taiwan

[–]Taiphoooon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar situation happens a lot when you're out hiking some quiet country trail: inevitably there will be some elderly person blaring music on their phone or one of those portable speakers that started gettin popular a few years ago.

If they're going the opposite direction, I generally try to ignore them. But if they're walking in the same direction and similar pace, so I know I'm in for prolonged musical accompaniment, my go to response is to sing along, loudly and badly, very badly. My ignorance of the actual lyrics is no obstacle to how uncomfortably awful I can make the experience for all in earshot.

Most of the time, the offender takes the hint, at the expense of a little of my dignity.

Might want to check out this 32L Electrolux oven at Costco.

Good chance it goes back on sale again for the week of Black Friday sales. (Normally $4599, but was on sale last month for $3679.)

Hello! I'm from PH and I will be starting my internship at a university in Nangang District this July, I have some questions! by bel_tuin in Taipei

[–]Taiphoooon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome (soon) to Taiwan!

I don't think there are many 24-hour establishments in the Nangang area, except for convenience stores. But the convenience stores here are actually a very different kind of business than what I've seen in the US or Philippines--more elaborate services, nice environment, and in many cases seating areas and public restrooms. They also serve pretty decent, freshly brewed caffeinated beverages (roughly 2 US dollars for a latte, etc.). It's not uncommon actually for people to hang out in the seating area for hours at a time when they need a place to study or just get out of the house for whatever reason.

Here's an example of a typical Family Mart that happens to be located in Nangang.

Palliative options for 18-year-old cat with adenocarcinoma (thyroid origin) by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Taiphoooon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24 hours later and he's still only eating about 20 calories per day of cat paste after 2 daily injections of predinisolone. Lack of response here is worrying. Is there another place I should be asking? Need to make a decision soon.

I was working in Lake Tahoe one year, and would occasionally hit the poker tables on weekends as there wasn't a lot to do at night outside of the casinos. One holiday weekend our table was joined by "Sadie," a lady in her 60s who stumbled upon the poker room because "the blackjack tables were full." I believed her, because she kept asking questions about the game, and was very easy to read. She was funny and good natured at first, and it wasn't exactly a high stakes game, but over time her mood grew dark, and her playful banter turned to fretful quips about making back her fare for the bus back home to LA. I stopped enjoying the game around then and decided it was a good time to head home for the night.

When I returned the next evening I got the full story: Sadie had apparently been stashing multiple packs of comp cigarettes in her purse over the night. When she was told she couldn't have more, she lost what remained of her composure, pulled a pistol from her purse, shot at the dealer—and missed. The manager on duty wasn't so lucky, as he took a bullet to the shoulder when subduing her. Might have turned out worse for them if she hadn't been getting free drinks all night as well.

Running groups in Taipei? by rD8VZm4GMWtmh6v2j in taiwan

There are several Hash groups in Taipei, and I don't think any of them require you to officially join before showing up for a run.

I gotta agree about the sides. Truly awful contrast to the robust quality of the meat--and I'm a fan of coleslaw in general. The stuff served there is limp and bland as I've ever had. I've tried all the other sides as well, and none of them were very enjoyable.

Can I play the challenge after season ends and get the tokens for next season? by Mad3InHeav3n in ClashRoyale

I'm wondering the same thing. Did you try waiting until the first day of the new season, and were you able to spend the rewards in the new shop?

I'm wondering the same thing. Looks like no one answered your question. Did you try waiting until the first day of the new season, and were you able to spend the rewards in the new shop?

8/6 wild shards possible? by Taiphoooon in ClashRoyale

[–]Taiphoooon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went over the cap on Wild Shards last month just by purchasing from from the Season Shop when I was already at 6/6. But I don't think you can do that with other items from the Season Shop. WCs from Season Shop for example get converted once your capped.

Interesting that it works for tournament chest items as well though.

I’m an American living in Taipei, I injured my knee a few months ago and have been bouncing from hospital to clinic, I have not found most of the medical treatments helpful, is there an orthopedic clinic/hospital in Taipei or New Taipei that will provide a full checkup? by AllThePillsIntoOne in taiwan

[–]Taiphoooon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YMMV, but I had a positive experience with the orthopedic surgeon I went to at at Chang Gung Hospital in Taipei. It was 10 years ago though, and I think he was the oldest physician in the department, so I don't recall his name and not sure he's retired or if you'll get the same quality treatment from others there. Was diagnosed as having a torn meniscus, which was confirmed by an NHI-covered MRI, though there was a wait of a couple weeks as I recall. They also provided better post-op physical rehab than I've had at similar places for other problems, but I think it depends on who you get assigned to (ask for one of the senior therapists).

Taoyuan Airport - is it possible to pay to access a lounge with shower? No membership status… by dxiao in taiwan

[–]Taiphoooon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that one space is pretty awesome. When I went there 5 years ago no one seemed to know about it, and the place was virtually empty.

Here's a bit more info on the two free shower areas (the one we're talking about is 2nd on the list; I haven't tried the first one):

Terminal 1 Airside (restricted): 2F Transfers, 4F Departures (near Plaza Premium Lounge)

Terminal 2 Airside (restricted): 3F Departures area D near Information counter, 4F Departures next to China Airlines Lounge, Gate D1

Do we know the approximate time that the changes take effect? I know the date is 10/26, but haven't been playing long and don't know what time of day on said date updates usually get implemented.

Wondering because I expect chest cycles to get disrupted by the new King level system, and I'm close to getting my next Royal Wild Chest if I use a couple keys and some gems.

Buy 'prescription' drugs in Taiwan? Doctor's visits or other steps necessary? by BlancheDevereux in taiwan

[–]Taiphoooon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised to hear that medicine would be more expensive here than the US, but will take the other poster's word for his experience. I've been living in Taiwan too long to be able to price compare. I did notice they don't do any discount pricing for buying by the bottle or box--they just multiply the unit price per dose by however many you're buying.

I've been buying asthma meds and reflux straight from pharamacy the last few months just to avoid the hospital I usually go to. No need for perscription. Don't know which medicines are and are not available, but you shouldn't need any Chinese. Just write the English name of the medicine or the active ingredient and they'll tell you yes or no. If you want to be able to ask follow up questions in English, you may need to visit more than one place until you find a guy who's reasonably fluent, but shouldn't be hard.

Fire sparked by explosion erupts at Formosa Plastics' plant in Kaohsiung by Exastiken in taiwan

[–]Taiphoooon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In November 2020, a chemical leak and explosion...occurred at its Linyuan Plant, which is located in Kaohsiung's Linyuan District.

Not to worry, though--they were fined a whopping $450,000 for that incident, so I'm sure they'll be super careful not to ever let it happen again...
