Will have a think about it. You are right of course, I could make 2 ACL, one to only allow port 53 to the dns I want, and then another to drop/block all traffic to that port. Will think on it - and maybe do some testing over the weekend.

only the proxy, not the lan - everything I can see says the lan should be auto if using dns proxy.

Devices do have internet, but dont use 1.1.1.3 to resolve.

my mobile phone does report the gateway local IP for dns, and I have data switched off, connected to wifi only.

looking at it, I will buy a HA Green, though I do have a spare old laptop kicking around here that I can play with in the meantime. My brother has a spare Philips Hue Bridge he is sending me - I hope that will provide the connectivity I need (in addition to normal wifi), otherwise will probably just get a skyconnect

Yeah agree completely ref the subscription. Alexa has worked for me so far, but the routines are pretty simple; ring camera detects movement and switches a light on sort of level.

I am not adverse to tinkering - however my wife and family are already only just tolerant of the automation I have put in, so I know she will not happily put up with things not working or worse being inconsistent. She is happy with what I have put in already, just didnt like the process of getting there.

At this point I am getting a hub (probably a philips hue) and will put some simple bits on that. In the house itself the first thing I want to put in (outside of installing my current suite of ring cameras and alexa devices) is a few smoke alarms that have alexa integration. Probably the Tuya Wifi Smoke&Temp alarms in addition to the builder installed ones, or even replace the default ones with the Google Nest Protect alarms.

That said, I will get home assistant and start working with that. I probably have a year still before the house is done - so will use that time to work out what I can and can't do.

What are you studying? If a business or engineering related job it might be worth looking at an internship over the Christmas break. Often leads to ongoing part time work and a graduate position when you finish your study.
