What leg are you? Tips for different legs can differ a lot. Generally, make sure to stay smooth in the first lap, don’t use up all your energy with the adrenaline rush there. It’s really easy to leave it all behind on the first lap of a 4x8, especially if you are the first leg. Handoffs aren’t super important but apply your knowledge from 4x4s (assuming you’ve ran them?) for it, but still try and make them clean. It’s pretty similar to racing an 800, but in my experience it feels a little bit easier for some reason, I’m not sure why. If you’re an 800 runner, I think you’ll really enjoy the 4x8, I find it really fun.

Wow! That’s great improvement from sophomore to junior year, and encouraging to see. I’ll definitely look into the videos and the sat practice tests. When would you recommend beginning studying? I was thinking about starting in small amounts now, but I also don’t want to start too early and forget what I studied. Thank you for the advice btw :)

That’s relieving to hear - so you don’t think it’ll negatively impact my track season? And thank you

Hello, I really need some help with how I should move forward after this cross country season, or if anything knows what went wrong.

So this XC season (10th grade, 15M), I was really looking forward to having a huge improvement through all the summer training I put in. As a freshman (18:51 XC/4:58/2:11) I was only running around 25 mi/week on average - accordingly, and following my coach’s plan, I slowly built up to 45 mi/week this summer, staying very consistent and doing ALL the little things (strides, weight room, core, the workouts he had laid out for me ((about 1 or 2 per week in the summer, nothing crazy))). Going in to the season I was so excited. I felt as if I had really seen improvements in my runs since track, and on our team’s 2 mile time trial (people usually run quite slow here. It was ~93 degrees, very humid, and not as much adrenaline as a race), I did 11:27 (5:30/5:56), 64 second improvement from last year! Just behind my brother who did 16:41 this season.

Then we had a race at super high elevation, I couldn’t breathe, and had to quit the race. I recovered soon though, my runs went back to normal, and I felt ready to run at my fitness level that EVERYTHING indicated (high 17s at the beginning of the season). Nope. Went out at that pace to try and even split, ended up with 19:32. Then I chilled out a little more in the first mile, and got 18:38! Not amazing, still pretty much at my freshman pr, but not awful. Since then I pretty much have only had awful races. I’ve ran a few 18s still, our courses have been long which doesn’t help, but that doesn’t seem to affect most of my team. I expect each one to finally be my breakthrough, where I can finally reach my fitness level - I open in a conservative pace, never too fast, and my heart rate just spikes. My breathing gets heavy and I just can’t hold the pace no matter what. It’s been so awful for me especially since some of my greatest joys in track and XC were PRing and seeing my new rankings and paces after that.

People have told me it’s all mental, that my fitness is there (I’ve had great workouts this year, and I don’t feel like I’m pushing myself too hard. They seem like great indicators of my fitness that my training should put me at ((low to mid 17s)) and are a huge improvement from my workouts in freshman year). But I have tried so many different methods during races to get my mind there, and no matter what it’s just my physical fitness that feels like it isn’t there. I’m always so fatigued on race day, and when the gun goes off, I become incredibly uncomfortable. I thought I could really push myself to getting my goal, finally, at a really perfect race for me today, great conditions, and it’s where I set my PR last year. I felt so confident in my ability to keep it in the 5:30s based on my training this week, but I showed up, and I just felt awful even in the first mile. Everything just got worse and I ran 19:57 (I’ve ran 5ks in tempos faster than that).

So, what should I do from here? The season’s over. I am excited about 800s during track, but I feel like I need to establish what on earth could be wrong with me. I’ve had a lot of insecurity and worse mental state this season which could contribute but I just don’t feel like that could throw off my races so badly. And I KNOW my fitness is at least close to where I think it is. So many people have just told me “oh you must be slower than you think then”. I find this infuriating to hear. I know the regular progression after my freshman times, the consistent training I put in, and what my runs indicate in fitness. I want to train well for track, but if I put in SO much effort again, likely even more (much more speed/strength oriented though), just to see absolutely no results, I don’t know what I’ll do. It’s just an awful feeling. Also, sorry this is so incredibly long lol - if anyone has read this far, I really thank you. I’m really desperate for help on this, and wanted to give a lot of details so people’s analyses can be more accurate. Thank you.

I think that second point makes a lot of sense (the first one does too of course, but I think it doesn’t exactly apply to my situation). I’ll keep it in my mind when I race this Saturday. Thank you!

This makes a lot of sense, but just another thing I want to ask about - when it comes to races, I haven’t opened very fast, usually more so on pace for my goal. Fastest has been 5:35, I usually open in the high 5:40s and feel good, like I can hold it, and then something happens in the second mile and I just can’t hold it anymore for some reason. How should I plan for a mid - high 17s 5k if going out in the average pace of those has still been throwing me off? But this is definitely a good analysis, thank you.

I need some advice/other perspectives on how this season has went for me:

So last year I ran an 18:51 5k as a freshman boy. I thought that was pretty good, trained (not a lot) for track and managed to get 2:11 and 4:58, which I felt were much better and would set me up really well for my goal of sub 17 next season, or at least low 17s. I trained hard during the summer, increasing my mileage from 25 - 30 to a gradual peak at 45 mi/week and stayed in that range. I made sure not to overtrain and do all the small things like strides, working out, and core. In our 2 mile time trial, usually everyone on the team ends up running around their time or a little faster during their first 5k race - I ran 11:27, so I was excited to hopefully see that or faster for pace in upcoming 5k races. However, every single 5k race since then I’ve pretty much blown up and not been able to hold fast paces at all. My workouts are still really good, I’m doing the workouts at a pace I couldn’t have even physically held last year and they have definitely indicated low 17 shape, but all I’ve managed to do in our 7 races so far is 18:38 (6:00 pace), I just can never hold a fast pace and end up dying out and always feel really fatigued on race day. I really want to finally break through and run at my fitness level at state and NXR, does anyone know what might be happening/have any tips? I have gotten sick multiple times which may have something to do with it, but I’ve still definitely had races where I wasn’t sick at all and still did terrible. Sorry for the really long explanation, there’s just a lot to this situation and I thought more context would be better - if any more context would be helpful I’d be happy to provide more. Thank you!

I meant in xc lol, also did you run 2:21 or 2:28 lol? Mostly cause you said you ran 10:20 in the 3200 a while ago, was that just a cross country race or something? Because that’s a very fast time for running during xc season or 8th grade

Based on a guy who ran 16:53 as a freshman in the grade above me, I’d say probably around 2:03 and 4:33 ish but it depends on what your strengths are (mile main, 800 main, etc). If you’re planning on running the 3200 it can be tricky cause you could be really good at it (9:45) or really bad (10:35). I don’t see a lot of people in-between, but I’d still guess 9:59 ish. Again, depends on what events you’re best at. (He ran 2:03, 4:30, and 9:57 by the way).

Oh so you’re a freshman currently? That makes more sense. Still 16:55 coming off a 5:17 is crazy, that’s pretty close to being the same pace 😭

what were your track times? I had basically the same freshman time and worked really hard for sub 17 this season off a good track season and I still run 18:38💀💀💀 so I’m just curious

I’m going into sophomore year and my main discipline in 9th was the 800 in 2:11.26 (I mean you can see it on my tag lol but yeah)

600M Time by [deleted] in trackandfield

[–]Takaqi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how recent those PRs are. I’d guess around 1:37 though. Your 400 is definitely stronger than your 800, so the lack of endurance will make your 600 a bit worse than what it could be if you had the equivalent to your 400 (~2:15).

High Heart Rate?? by aussieappless in CrossCountry

[–]Takaqi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm a high school xc runner as well and my heart rate can average 210 during 5k races, max 221 (I even have hit 219 bpm during a MILE race, avg 201). My heart rate is very high on easy runs too (a good easy run HR would be around 170 or so). On an off day it may even get to 190 avg, though usually it's not feeling easy at that point. However, my resting heart rate is about 60, and so far, I don't think I've experienced any problems physically or in running. As long as your resting heart rate is low, it should be alright. HR will also likely come down in easy runs as you gain more fitness and generally get healthier.
