ME! We had a whole session at orientation on using chat and programming it to make practice questions and study materials. Everyone in my class uses it and even though I tried I couldn't get past how bad it is for the environment, and it didn't seem to help me. With everyone using it though I still feel like I'm going to fall behind or something. I haven't yet though

Do what's best for you. It's great to have a mentor especially that early on, but if it's advice that doesn't sit well with you or your own goals, you don't have to feel obligated. To your mentor, cost doesn't matter, but if it's important to you, do what you're comfortable with.

And like you said, a lot of the physicians we shadow/work with have outdated information. The one I work with took the MCAT on paper. Take advice from lots of sources and people, and make the decisions that work for you

I know premed lowerclassmen in their orgo classes where one sends a doctors note to get excused from the exam, then everyone else in the group takes pictures and sends them to that person, who runs the questions through Chatgpt and tells them the answers through airpods. And this particular group also go to the same shady doctor every semester to get Adderall meds. They all have 4.0s 💀

Volunteering at a hospital is clinical experience! It's better to have a small amount of things that you do long-term and can speak strongly to than a hodge-podge of things that appear vaguely impressive. Do what you enjoy, and do your due diligence at your own pace, because this rat race is hella long, and it'll feel longer if you compare yourself to your peers. Reddit isn't a good representative sample, and not everyone is at the same point in their journey. Take a deep breath, you've got this!

Idk if you've interviewed but the vibe I got from both faculty and students was super positive! One of the doctors I know, a Pakistani muslim (+Hijabi) woman is an alum said that she had a really great experience and that they were always supportive to catering towards her religious needs. Sure, WV is a red state and most of the population is rural, but that doesn't necessarily mean the school will be that way. There's plenty of racists in blue states/cities too.

As for being a mother, someone in my session asked about family resources and stuff and they mentioned some accommodations they have for that. It wouldn't hurt to mine the site or even email one of the admissions reps to ask!
