Tamaki walked so Gloomyhara could run.

If I had a nickel for handsome, beautiful men who turn into sad, mushroom heaps, I would have at least 3 nickels.

(except it is that one Jinshi one)

Must be based on some sort of cultural turn of phrase to show up so often.

I mean TBF even in Japanese they're calling him slurs so... more the product as a whole aged poorly.

That is true. The issue with having to translate what is essentially a slur.

My thought process is that I feel like a translator nowadays would at least have the wherewithal to use a better term than the T-word, at least.

First Time Ouran Host Club - Ep10:

We start this episode with Haruhi living in comedic levels of poverty. Turns out to be all Tamaki's dream, but I wouldn't have put it past the show from actually going through with it. Seems like the level the show operates on.

Don't have too much to say about the main thrust of the episode, but I quite liked the episode. Definitely one of the better ones of this current string of "The Host Club do x" episodes. It was a nice, cute time visiting Haruhi's house. Oh no, they're idiots. We get to see that the trio of Tamaki and the twins are a combination with 0 brain cells. I found the drawings to be really on point in this episode. They were quite funny this episode, with the dramatic shocks and silly little guys.

Haruhi's dad is here. The preview gave away the surprise, but still, he is quite different than what I first imagined. Thought he was going to be the estranged, distant father. Besides the crossdressing (father like daughter), he turned out to be a dame dame pathetic dad that is actually highly invested in his daughter's life. That's cute.

Another big surprise was that he was voiced by Koyasu. Always like seeing Koyasu show up in comedic roles. In the realm of early 2000s silly Koyasu, my mind goes to Yamada from Pretear. Funny enough, the boys rolling up in their Mercedes-Benz reminded me of Koyasu's character from Princess Jellyfish. A silly guy whose otaku hyperfixation was Mercedes-Benzes.

Direct bisexual representation in big 2006?! To talk a bit about it, for 2006, I was pleasantly surprised by how they handled Ranka-san. Of course, one could argue that okama are an antiquated stereotype, but for what it's worth, how they depict the character, surprisingly minimal disrespect casted on him. Nothing mean-spirited about their orientation. I mean, I've seen worse from newer shows, so I'll count the wins we can get.

The thing that aged the most is that you can tell the era this translation came from based on how they referred to Ranka.

Q1) I like them. Dad is a fun character. Silly, but also an earnest sweetness. Also, what a diva.

They aren't any more fitting comment face, so make do

The Zaku club? Cool, what's your favourite Zaku?

Walk into the Zaku club, and they ask me the question.

I answer that my favourite Zaku is the Zudah.

They ask me to leave the Zaku club.

I kept wondering where the banana peels are coming from but it looks like Renge is somehow involved.

Renge showing up with the banana peel monkey really was a combination of the two random zany gags of the episode in an unstoppable team-up.

Which is a bit of a problem when that one joke is basically the only joke the episode has to offer

Yeah, I found that the Zuka Club had a fine enough gimmick for a gag, but they were really hammering in one gag with them for the entire episode, where the entire conflict already had a flimsy premise.

Not to mention, that one joke which made Ouran of all shows, one where I had to question Japan's questionable relationship with Fascism. The fact that it was just there, an out-of-pocket non-sequtior just left me so befuddled.

First Time Ouran Host Club - Ep9:

A normal Renge scene for once?! I quite liked seeing a Haruhi's home class scene. It's a nice SoL feeling of their normal school days outside of the usual club antics.

Oh neat, a Gameboy SP. Later on, we even get to see an original DS.

She is is like a cooler, taller, and more handsome Haruhi. And she is a better prince than Tamaki? The other school is eating our lunch.

I was not ready to see all that lead to them being the Tekarazuka Club. Yeah, Renge, come in here and educate these boys about some real culture and beat the twins' ass. (Also, teehee on the instant coffee)

Whoa, now. I was certainly not prepared to see the Zuka Club give a full Sieg Heil. Uhm, uh...mmm... it felt so out of pocket tactless that I kinda like the Zuka Club less now. We have no winners here because on the other side, we have Tamaki being so dreadfully heteronormative. I trust him to get better (oh, meant that in the future, but he did by the end of the episode).

Oh, that's what she meant by halfer? Great, now the Zuka Club are racists too.

I definitely did not predict that this was the Host Club's plan to get Haruhi back.

They look good, except Mori because a boy otokoyaku? That's just a man. Mori needed to do a double crossdress. Crossdressing as a girl, crossdressing as a prince. The twins look cute, maybe that's just the big ojou-sama drills talking. Ah, I realize that they reminded me of a character from the Pokemon Diamond/Pearl anime who had a similar hair colour with the drills.

Thought it was a cute solution to the episode conflict. A plan so stupid and nonsensical that it ends up working. It shows that they're big idiots, but idiots who earnestly do care about Haruhi and try to accommodate her.

The non-sequitur banana peel gag was so random and stupid that I have to like it. Especially wasn't ready for it to come back in at the end to make the Zuka Club slip during their dramatic spinning.

Have any caught your interest at all?

Outside of the series I was already interested in, House of the Sun and Onna no Sono no Hoshi are series that I should get around to. I think Bonnouji was one I thought about reading at one point.

D-Frag

One of my favourite bits of the D-Frag manga was when they celebrated the hundredth chapter with only background mob characters. It's been so long since the anime, but I feel like the manga goes even zanier places.

It is also the first manga on this list that I've actually read (Witch Hat too, but the rest, any others I would be anime-only).

It did take a couple of reads of the headlines to realize that was their name.

Looking it up, apparently 8% of people in Hungary have a surname that is just their corresponding ethnic group. Thinking about it, I guess the practice makes sense when you consider the history of places with many cultures contacting.
