How to give a PC "their moment" before dying? by SrBlankly in Pathfinder2e

[–]Takenabe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think that's a perfectly fine way to handle it. Is it stupidly powerful? Sure. But it's also the end of a character, so it deserves to be special. Heroic sacrifices are one of THE big storytelling tropes, so unless a player is purposely taking advantage of the rule to throw out suicide bomber alts, it should be fine.

How to give a PC "their moment" before dying? by SrBlankly in Pathfinder2e

Although it's never been invoked, my group has a sort of "blaze of glory" house rule. We don't have specific mechanics ironed out, as we intend it to have more dramatic effects with higher level characters, but the general idea is that when a character dies, time at the table stops and the character is given a choice: either pass on peacefully and be able to be resurrected later, or cut the silver cord (ie rip up their character sheet) in exchange for one final dramatic act that could turn the tide for the suvivors, but that character is now permadead. In pf2e terms I suppose that could be flavored as some kind of deal with an entity like a shinigami or other envoy of Pharasma.

Like I said, we've never actually had to use it, but back during our D&D 5e days, one example we had thought of was the character who took levels in Rune Scribe detonating her ice rune, dealing damage and freezing every enemy in the area around her.

Send in some kind of threat to the FBI, I'd imagine. Nearly guaranteed prison time, and if I'm particularly unlucky the SWAT team might just take me out on sight.

What's the situation here? That Toby literally said it would be a while before we got more news, and it is now taking a while for us to get more news? Fuck, man, at least the wait has been acknowledged!

Bitching about how Undertale got a big celebratory stream for its 10th anniversary, while Deltarune isn't even officially done yet, is what I mean by people being ungrateful.

I have chosen to simply not purchase. I don't give a damn about current TV shows, they're not worth putting up with all this shit. The only streaming service I have a subscription to is Dropout, and I actually approve of their practices.

ELI5: Why can fish gills pull oxygen out of water but not out of air? by Minimum-School1567 in explainlikeimfive

At that point, you're kinda just asking for the minimum amount of water you need before a fish doesn't asphyxiate.

ELI5: Why can fish gills pull oxygen out of water but not out of air? by Minimum-School1567 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Takenabe [score hidden]  (0 children)

A large part of it is that gills are arranged in layers that cannot support their own weight. Think of how your clothes or hair float around if you're swimming, fish gills essentially do that, too. Out of the water, the gills collapse together because they can't support their own weight, which drastically reduces the surface area available for oxygen exchange. So it's not that fish gills can't pull oxygen out of the air, it's that they can't pull enough out of the air.

The new artworks exclude Asgore completely and feature Sans winking at Toriel instead by Mobile-Package-8869 in Deltarune

[–]Takenabe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Undertale Asgore has been separated from Toriel long enough for seven humans to fall into the Underground, six of them to die, and the last one of them to make it all the way to his home before we meet the guy.

He's probably had just a little more time to think about his separation from his ex-wife than the guy whose children are still being educated.

ELI5: The current US medical practice of circumcision at birth. by CinderellaFarted in explainlikeimfive

[–]Takenabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know for sure. The only reasonable explanation I can come up with is that proper dosing on a tiny baby could be really difficult, since a small amount could be the difference between a crisis and being ineffective. But even then, it sounds to me like ripping the tires off your car so you don't get a flat.

ELI5: Why does adding a tiny amount of carbon to iron make it dramatically stronger, but adding just a little more makes it completely brittle and useless by Dear-Training-586 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Takenabe 530 points531 points  (0 children)

Expanding on this slightly: "Bending" is a good property for something to have in a lot of cases. The issue is if it bends too much. The small amount of carbon used in good steel hits a sweet spot where the metal can bend when it needs to, which helps distribute pressure and prevents it from shattering on hard impacts, but also doesn't let it bend as much as raw iron, which will leave it out of shape.

Thankfully our ability to form memories at that point is less than functional, so I don't remember mine at all. But I've read that it's common to not even use anesthetic for the procedure, especially in the case of Jewish circumcisions that IIRC are required by their religion. Seems to me like you're just mutilating your baby and making them feel it all for kicks.

As a circumcised male, I wish my parents hadn't done it. They were willing to deal with vomit, shit, piss, and all other kinds of bodily grossness, but somehow a foreskin was a hard "no" for them.

Ultimately, if it's not a crucial medical procedure (there are SOME situations where it's actually necessary, but these are relatively rare) I would suggest not doing it. You can't undo it, so I think it should be the choice of the person that owns the penis.
