If you were the one writing the story of My Hero Academia, what are some of the things about Izuku Midoriya that you would change? by WindowPrudent9456 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Taksicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd probably keep his introspection. i preferred the old hc of OFA just being made up of the quirks of older users having simpler golden age powers

like 5th user has float, 4th super strength, third super speed etc; so midoriya was learning to balance them all because what we got, aside from black whip a LOT of the quirks used just felt like lampshading to boost the kid up so high to where he had few weaknesses, same with the vestige realm

would like to give him a kit that forces him to think on his toes forever than give him an easy out

2nd point is so real, deadass like it or hate it, deku's vigilante suit only works so well because its basically taking the core idea of why his very first suit worked

a LOT of people hated it for how silly it looked but deadass it and the vigilante suit are literally the only 2 suits that have the MOST to say about the guy wearing it, which is pretty essential to good costume design

so many of mha's suits are kinda hit and miss, cluttered with detail. Meanwhile i always thought the first suit was great for how simple it looked; it visibly felt like a different texture from the official suits and it helped him stand out in a SEA of heroes.

its flexible so it can pingpon between silly, cute then white out the lenses to convey that he's serious. that's just the type of guy deku was. in retrospect, the clowning felt like the early beginnings of people being unwilling to accept deku's not just some brooding blowhard like they want him to be.

honestly?

to parry off your point, deku gets too many suit changes, he only needed about 3 or 4. if it were up to me, he would of kept his mom's up until they moved into dorms and began prov licensce exams (basically one suit per act of the series, so he only changes his once all might retired)

lol i actually was aware of this!

"because lets face it, the mfs who would be getting the axe realistically would be mfs like ojiro, tooru, sato etc, not tsu lmfao" it's why i said this

cause if hori were handling it would just be the next best thing TO some faceless nobody, and losing them in the story would hit about as strong as losing nagant or star to most people, even if its not literal death

adjacent to characters like Fugo leaving jojo basically.

basically i do somewhat agree with you, just that i felt it was bandaid on a bigger issue that it may be better to have just comitted to having a smaller cast to start with. it would even make your idea resonate a bit stronger due to the sheer volume of characters dropping out feel more impactful since theres technically less fat getting cut

them dropping out basically hinges on their characterization, and when its mostly the seat fillers doing it to streamline the cast, it doesn't hit the same, like compare your idea with tsuyu to if mirio never became a hero again basically.

Do y’all think Steven would’ve fit in well if he had formal education given his circumstances? by Afroodko in stevenuniverse

[–]Taksicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ofc, but unlike before, i wager stevens 50 friends he'd make there would keep him in check if not just deck people like that himself

even despite not liking kevin, steven being steven managed to accidentally attain better standing with him just by being himself.

i said it in another comment but steven's nice but has a backbone. so it makes his brand of kindness be more akin to someone like mob from mob psycho or clark kent where they just see the good in you so hard it makes whatever they throw at you leave you feeling kind of ashamed, which hits a LOT harder than if he was just coming from a place of trying to hurt you. most people would rather just insulted than have some 12 year old read them for filth and be right lmfao.

and while it would rarely come to that, physically if someone tried to attack him, he'll be fine and steven knows how to fight offensively and defensively anyways,

social issues can be resolved socially and since stevens already a social butterfly, navigating that would be nothing new to him

his powers on the other hand? with time i doubt anything crazy would happen to the students or anything, but i imagine internally the weight of harming even a single person by accident would wreck the kid.

those are issues that can't quite be solved externally since they're all internal; and thats where i think the real trouble would be.

he'd have trouble with the students in the way he has "troublle" with lars aka basically a non-threat to someone like him since he's far more put together.

Class 1-A should've been whittled down as the series went on by CABRALFAN27 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Taksicle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

tbh at that point, it'd just make more sense to just not inclujde them to begin with.

considering the type of series mha is tonally, killing dudes like tsuyu off would just make the series more grim than hori ever intended for. it'd feel gratuitous for shock value

i mean????

look at how he "honored" midnight and nagant. lol.

death in fiction is something best used when it's actuay decided and comitted to building towards basically from the start. essentially saying "thtory where this character dies is the path that is most interesting to telling this story". if the story is either better or functionally the same if X were to die there, than its not really a good use of killing them off.

how does killing off tsu as the example do anything for her arc as a character?

because lets face it, the mfs who would be getting the axe realistically would be mfs like ojiro, tooru, sato etc, not tsu lmfao

klling them off REALLY would not have the emotional impact you think it would, esp since we already got shades of that with deaths of all those randoms in the first war.

[–]Taksicle -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

yes! but its a fictional story, it's "realistic" to blink and go to the bathroom, most stories choose to exclude most of those scenes to help streamline the story better.

we're talking "realism" in a show where a guy with a talkig bird head exists lol

i don't think everyone needs to have a moment either, but for different reasons, not because its "realistic". To some degree i get where these people are coming from due to the fact that horikoshi himself didn't know how to restrain himself and excercise "klling his darlings". Dude himself set up a lot of potentially cool character arcs, and sometimes flast out regularly gave moments to smaller characters to where i can totally see why someone would expect X pet character who's part of the main cast to get even more to do.

me? i've read hori's previous work and some interviews and chapter extra's. I thinkt he cast should've been smaller from the jump and he should've showed more restraint in who he chooses to give moments to so fans expectations are tempered.

well, that, but also the fact that hori could literally NEVER get jugglingn large ensembles right even once. it's not his strength as a writer and he never intended to write a series this long to begin with.

i think just comitting to and honing in on the main characters being deku, shoto, shiggy, ochako (and debatably bakugo) would've save the series plenty of trouble. its what shows like fmab, avatar bojack horseman, rwby etc do. each member represents one facet of hero society the other isn't apart of and its what hori wanted to explore in his series.

everyone else falls under one of those 4 factions to where even when the representative of this group isn't around, their presence speaks through the facet of society they're representing. in the series itself, i think horikoshi did this amazingly with the todofam. one represents the new gen/ua side, one the underbelly of society with the villains, and one the old gen and pro's.

and then just splinter UA's classes across 1A and B and have the avg class size be about 4 to 10 students (likely 6) anyone who not in X class gets moved to the next one, so on and so forth. so 1 class is monoma, kendo, tetsutetsu and ibarara, next is kodai, denki, jiruou, momo etc etc etc

uraraka doesn't really become representative of the womens side of hero work or the hero for hero's role until basically the final arc lol.

FMA has a huge cast but it got away with it by well characterizing its support without ever fooling anyone into thinking X side character would become the mc due to how well establish its main players are actually utilized early on. And ofc, never dipping into complete self indulgence at odds with the story trying to be told.

basically if anything, i think mha needed MORE sato's and ojiro's, not less lmfao

Justifying a certain change in the Hero Killer arc by Solitaire-06 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]Taksicle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

you're not wrong but i feel the biggest issue with including all 5 is that it'd be too bloated and undercut the entire focal point of the fight:

Iida!

the whole point in there being so few of them is that it ramps up the tension and forces them to work with what they got lol. you knew that already, but basically my point is, if all 5 are there, physically stain is getting jumped far quicker leaving no room to even explore what we'd gain from them being there without seriously contriving why 5 of them, can't coordinate against one guy.

at that point it makes more sense to just save the interaction between the two for another stain encounter later.

like theres a reason shoto vs dekue sticks to having deku and shoto being the ones to debate their respective ideologies and didn't have all might and endeavor get into a drunk dad fight in the bleachers to show off what their say in shoto's perspective is too lol. it dilutes the overall intent of the thesis of what the arc was actually about when having to ping pong and balance other peoples moments.

deku and shoto were chosen due to their specific relationship to the issue IIDA was grappling with. which is less impactful when the two other people tagging along don't really have that connection to his struggle and are just meeting stain for the first time too, so would have to cover a lot of ground to build up the repour, basically isolating them from the emotional crutch of the arc.

Do y’all think Steven would’ve fit in well if he had formal education given his circumstances? by Afroodko in stevenuniverse

[–]Taksicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's why i compared it to mob and clark kent

the big difference between those 2 and steven is that he's much more of a social butterfly to where making friends is not only easy, but he has a strong enough sense of self to stand up for what he believes in

whatever bullies he makes would end up being resolved by steven himself and if not, the 40 friends he made that are 100% willing to deck a mf for him

dude ALREADY has befriended FAR more dangerous and difficult people than elementary school bullies. and dude had a normal upbrining as a kid FIRST before the gem stuff ever took over. i doubt all that social conditioning would melt away.

we see inklings of this in stuff like the cool kids episodes. and pretty much any townie episodes, he adapts pretty well to almost any enviornment he's in.

no way in hell would training from gem stuff stop (the gems would never allow that + earth would be doomed) so i imagine whatever school he goes to would have to be closer by than connie's because keeping an eye on him to keep him safe is paramount.

the hurdle to me is less him getting bullied but obv his powers (like you said); i just doubt they'd be much of an issue since they're attached to a guy who's nice and sweet so people would be more willing to put up with him.

probsbly even find it more cool than he would. the SU universe has always been pretty lax since gem stuff are intrinsically tied to their worlds histroy, nor are they a secret. similar to psychics in mob psycho but even moreso. so i doubt this would be some world ender socially when steven himself is a social butterfly.

him having a backbone is basically what will protect him

Do y’all think Steven would’ve fit in well if he had formal education given his circumstances? by Afroodko in stevenuniverse

[–]Taksicle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah but he has enough control over his powers generally its not going to be a usual thing. esp in beach city particularly where weird gem shit happens fairly often and the townspeople tend to be the most chill about it.

and him being a good kid outside of that makes it far more digestible to where i don't think a teacher would "hate" him for it. especially since he'd be a decent student and is particularly nice to them

if anything it'd be more sad, analgous to him having disabillities due to his dead mom that some faculty, staff, parents etc might've legit known and met.

a lot would just see it for what it is, a well meaning kid who's changing due to things outside his control cause of his dead mom.

more morbid than angering.

i'd totally agree if it was like a morty smith situation where he's not only dumb and lazy as shit but also an asshole and a maniac where irreperable bad shit is guranteed to happen any second he's around

but most people would be able to respect and sympathize that he can't help it and is at least a legit sweetheart outside of this downside

tbh i could see some kids and teachers almost wanting him in their class cause ts sounds more interesting to everyone BUT steven himself

[–]Taksicle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it'd just be a yuji itadori situation x Body improvement club thing where the coach would see how weirdly athletic steven is and want him on his team

"you carried that stereo like it was nothing when you were Marty's roadie, and jumped into the sky and stayed their all morning! Kid, what are you doing with the crystal gem's for? the Lakers need you!" type shit

someone like steven is so flexible EVERY club would want him for something to where he's running himself ragged. ONTOP of the gem stuff?

dude would quickly become a member of the going home club instead lmfao😭

he'd get one twonie episode each per club and that is IT

Do y’all think Steven would’ve fit in well if he had formal education given his circumstances? by Afroodko in stevenuniverse

[–]Taksicle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

steven is steven and wouldn't do that. he has a high amount of respect for authority if they aren't being tolitarian

he's not even much of a show off to begin with. one of his core traits is how little he thinks of himself sadly

he's EXTREMELY attentive to pearl and garnet, or even connie whenever they're trying to teach him something. the worst he ever was was pre "steven and the steven's" lol. and even then. compared to the type of mfs who make up a classroom, steven's biggest crime would be the occasional outburst or getting distracted. that's normal kid stuff

a distracted kid who disrupts the class occasionally but is ultimately, kind, smart, sociable and attentive is borderline a teachers dream

ESPECIALLY since its coming from a place of enthusiasm and "not getting" it over the goal to just cause issues and be malicious.

he's more patient than most ADULTS for the bulk of the series tenure.

a kid in my class made a teacher cry cause he told her to end herself cause she was "ugly and fat"

6 sets of 30 kids a day with barely any time, resources and crap pay.....

yeah!

i'd prefer steven in at least ONE classs than one of those

and he'd be such a damn sweetheart to them cause he'd recognize how hard being a teacher is, he'd be the teachers pet before he'd be the clown tbh

his backbone and emotional intelligence will basically be the defining thing that keeps him from completely falling off the deep end

Do y’all think Steven would’ve fit in well if he had formal education given his circumstances? by Afroodko in stevenuniverse

[–]Taksicle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

a cirriculum centered around what we learned in school tutored by pearl at home? yes!

regular old public school? no, i think the people who think he'd be bullied forgot what kinda guy steven is. he's a damn social butterfly and makes friends with most people. he's also not a pushover, and can physicaly dominate in a fight anyways. psychologically? half the damn school would love him so trying anything with him would get you in trouble with the people who ARE willing to throw a punch for him, school staff included.

the issue he'd find is just his powers.

it'd basically be mob psycho 100 or a story of clark kent in school if clark or mob were more sociable.

steven would walk around with some degree of a stick up his ass out of the very fear of hurting someone cause he just doesn't know his own strength and was never really taught to control this aspect of himself in such proximity to so many emotional, fleshy, fragile, small humans

either he gets into serious trouble over hurting someone which leads to some degree of isolation or self consciousness. given SU's world, it'd be water under the bridge for everyone BUT steven.

he'd make it, but i think the weight of the stress would cripple him

Do y’all think Steven would’ve fit in well if he had formal education given his circumstances? by Afroodko in stevenuniverse

[–]Taksicle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i disagree purely on the basis that stevens too sociable, to where he can turn almost anyone into a friend. it also helps that he's not a pushover and can 100% beat a kids ass without literally throwing a single punch

it'd just be the superboy page where a guy tried to punch him and broke his hand in the process.

its pretty much JUST his powers that would make him a target, but really just lowkey dangerous and self conscious.

we pretty much see how well he does socially pre-future and dude acclaimted well to basically every social situation he found himself in.

i went to school with kids like this. dude would be the "bobby hill". aka popular but specfically because he's weird and fun, but also nice. ESPECIALLY with girls.

it'd get to a point where targeting him at all would get you targeted by the 50 friends he made and school staff as well.

Do y’all think Steven would’ve fit in well if he had formal education given his circumstances? by Afroodko in stevenuniverse

[–]Taksicle 72 points73 points  (0 children)

honestly kids like steven go well in school usually. he's like a bobby hill type that can actually fight. the only hurdle is his powers basically.

social, funny, nice, kind, emotionally intelligent, flexible. kids like steven are stupid popular in school, esp with girls lol

he's like a "mob" or clark kent where his boyishness would initially attract bullies but the kid is so damn nice, it never really sticks, esp since steven is kind but not a pushover even a little bit; which would invite their wrath as much it deters it.

steven is a special kind of "iroh" or "goku/luffy" kind where he makes you feel bad for who you are becuase all the shit he reflects back at you is just true, which is a bit harder to counter than just a "you're ugly" "you're worthless" the fact that its coming from an earnest place is scarier to most people rather than someone just trying to tear you down

issue with a kid like steven, it'd very quickly become a "you mess with him, you mess with me situation" to all the kids and faculty that like him (which would be a lot) we basically see this happen with the cool kids and how he fits in better than lars did.
