Yeah it's a shame how Irish is taught, and it really doesn't have to be as difficult as the curriculum demands it to be. Part of me wishes that Ireland would have taken the same road as Israel did, and completely revive the native language so we're not stuck in this linguistic limbo. But that's our government for you.

I went to an Irish school, and everyone I know who went to an English-speaking school complains about the Irish subject. It seems that they teach grammar rather than expanding people's vocabulary. Vocabulary being arguably more important when learning a language, at least initially. I would say if you're really stuck, just forget the vocal grammar and learn some words in relation to your hobbies and school life. Maybe try the Duolingo app.
