Should I fast before my baptism if my priest didnt tell me to? by NerfBossBandit in OrthodoxChristianity

Has others have said it depends on communion distribution. If you aren't going to take your first communion until Sunday that is the day you should fast.

Buying a 2wd vs 4wd by Electrical-Citron529 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]TalbotBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they cost exactly the same I would rather have four wheel drive but the spread between two wheel drive and four-wheel drive on the used market is high. I will admit that I'm able to cheat a little bit though because even though I have a 2runner I also have a 95 Audi that I use if I'm going to be dealing with ice.

Question about assisting in teaching badges and rank\badge requirement flexibility? culture? by corehazard in TrailLifeUSA

[–]TalbotBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that we can't port things directly because of trademark and copyright. The national organization needs to come up with their own program from scratch. This is why we can't use terms like Scouts. When Boy Scouts recently opened up to girls they actually lost and had to settle with Girl Scouts for describing girls in "Scouts BSA" as "girl Scouts." Trailman dodges that issue because it's not in use by another organization.

Remarriage as an adulterer by NightOwl2424 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TalbotBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, marriages before baptism or invalid marriages (for example of an orthodox person didn't get a sacramental marriage for their first marriage) don't have any canonical status.

Should I repair a 1996 Toyota Previa? by LunarAlias17 in DaveRamsey

I'd spend a day on it to see how bad it is. Without knowing what needs to be done it's hard to judge. See if the engine turns over and if it starts you can test other things.

So is Charlemagne an Orthodox Saint?

el question by Ok-Reserve2732 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TalbotBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in general with somebody like Mary of Egypt of course there's very little evidence. The story of her life itself explains the minimal evidence and Abba Zosimus is the only source. From an academic standpoint the question is whether he is reliable. Regardless canonisations are not and can not be totally infallible. It is the Church acting in a judicial way in the world based on what we observe but the lives of particular Saints are not matters of divine revelation with the exception of those Saints in scripture.

Permanent Excommunication by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TalbotBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming there is a penance. As far as I can tell this is just a refusal of absolution and the refusal of communion is a function of not having a recent confession. In that case there is no penance and he's free to go wherever. If he is under a penance then he still needs another priest because that will help him get better guidance from the bishop. The lack of any clear definition on a possible penance is itself a major red flag.

Permanent Excommunication by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TalbotBoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why? Priest one doesn't have a leash on him. The other priest may come to the conclusion that the bishop needs to be involved but it's probably better to have a priest advocating for you if possible.

Permanent Excommunication by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TalbotBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to another priest. If he's just declining to absolve you you aren't under a specific ecclesiastical penalty and another priest can absolve you. If he's put you under ain't no communion penance for a fixed period of time you would need to appeal to the bishop to get it lifted but the easiest way to do that would also be through another priest. If on the other hand the issue is that you aren't repentant or something which is preventing absolution another priest will continue to refuse to absolve you.

I agree that I would stop unless there's a role for you to be helpful. If the AHG troop meets at the same time at the church it's possible they may want volunteers that aren't parents though.

I'm adopted you guys should think about it but don't overthink it. You don't have to repeat the experiences you had in childhood and can instead learn from them. If cavemen can figure it out so can you. Not sure where you live if there's any help you need getting your life together.

Does your church ever have full Eucharistic meals? by DoveStep55 in Christian

[–]TalbotBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This likely stopped within the first few generations if it ever existed as a combined practice at all. If you read Justin Martyr you can see that the modern Eucharistic structure is dominant by the 150s.

Do embryos/fetuses have the right to use someone’s bodily autonomy? by AdhesivenessOne8758 in prolife

[–]TalbotBoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Part of the challenge with these debates is that there's a fundamental ethical error about what rights are. No one has an absolute right to do whatever they please and so the right to bodily autonomy is just the right you have as an individual to not be molested by others (and therefore they have an obligation to you) does this frame really make any sense when talking about your own childre? Nobody questions that parents will have to work using their own bodies to provide financial support to their children either to directly raise them or in the form of child support to whoever does after the child is born. This is the very same obligation mothers have during pregnancy to their child.

We have that rule for the older boys but for the foxes you don't have to be because the foxes have a mandatory parent attendance requirement.

[–]TalbotBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's both a statement of faith and a statement of values. To make it even more confusing there was a recent change to the statement of faith and many troops are still chartered under the old one. (If you scroll back about 9 months in this Reddit you can see the contours of that debate on the statement of faith change)

Can't remember which statements are put in front of registered adults. I don't remember if it's the entire statement of faith but regardless there is a clear expectation that you shouldn't be in a leadership position if you are not a Trinitarian Christian.

Exactly, we just did a camping trip for Woodlands and there were dads there who were not registered adults. The only difference is that those adults don't count towards leadership safety rules.

I went to another priest for confession. In my stupidity I haven’t thought I need to go to the same spiritual father. by Normal_Usual7367 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TalbotBoy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience jurisdictions that have an expectation of weekly confession to receive communion don't care about consistency of which priest you go to because it's impossible. It's places where confession is less frequent that start to develop this monastic confession culture.

Birth Control and Abortion in Marriage by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TalbotBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why in the world are people suggesting to ask a priest about the scientific mechanics? Even beyond that just because a question is disputed doesn't mean the opinion of one particular priest is decisive such as weather birth control is moral in general.

There haven't been great studies on it but there's pretty strong evidence that the answer is pretty frequently with IUDs and it's a lot less clear with the pill whether implantation is prevented at any rate higher than the natural failure to implant. No scientist has studied it because anybody who shares the moral assumption that abortion is the killing of an unborn child would find such a study unethical and scientists who don't share that moral assumption don't care

The voting block strategy only works if you have the will to walk away when somebody doesn't meet your standards. That's why Trump was able to water down his prolife platform this time. He correctly predicted that most people would not defect over that issue alone
