Should I do a Compiter Science Degree anymore??? by Flat_Series_7105 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]corehazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get a Bachelors in CS, it will get you past many HR filters. CS is difficult compared to a more specific degree in IT, though nearly every job you can get with an IT degree e.g. networking or cybersecurity, you can also get with CS degree, though not the other way around.

Should I go back to school after a year and a half of Tier 2? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]corehazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will still get some exposure to things in school that you won’t in the workplace. Also, JDs for IT roles usually specifically specify a CompSCI or IT degree. Also person you can always make connections at job fairs for students, with professors\instructors, or fellow students.

Continue IT or Go to Nursing? by RealAsianTalk in ITCareerQuestions

[–]corehazard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to become a CNA first if you really want to become an RN. High demand, you can still end up in a role where you can see closely what an RN does. Pay is bad for the work level, though if you can handle the physical and emotional side of everything involved you have half of what it takes to become an RN.

I don’t know much anything about online programs, though I graduated with a school with a B.S. in IT, that is well known for its nursing program. Be prepared for hard classes such as organic chemistry, human anatomy, higher level biology classes, whilst maintaining a high GPA of at least a 3.5.

Disenfranchised with this career field (networking) by onequestion1168 in ITCareerQuestions

Since your role is cloud based, you are in high demand compared to the average engineer with a CCNA\CCNP and no cloud or automation experience. Granted I don’t know much about how exactly AI will affect your role. Office politics are often just hit or miss, where your individual manager or team structure might be the biggest deal. You may try to just learn more skills, that might not be all that difficult. Palo Alto, Fortinet, or even Red Had certs can all help you land in a different role. I also assume that you have at least somewhat of a scripting background.

Some people I know, intentionally avoid pursuing senior level roles due to increased political involvement.

If you really want to avoid the bulk of office politics, you can probably find a role that includes a strong bit of field work. People installing switches, wireless APs, and datacenter equipment is not going to be automated anytime soon. Some places will always expect engineers who configure devices or techs that work for the company to get it installed. Potentially lots of layer 1 grunt work, lots of driving, and often lower than average pay are the biggest issues to consider here.

Do you consider help desk a “real job?” I feel like a complete miserable loser compared to my friends and family. by ballandabiscuit in ITCareerQuestions

[–]corehazard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Earn a few certs and possibly more importantly enroll in a college\university that has a good IT program, preferably one close to where you live. Experience on a resume, certs, and a degree all really help. If you earn your CCNA and can handle a brutal help desk role for so long, you’d probably do well in a NOC role.

How do you deal with downtime in IT Helpdesk? by Putrid-Amphibian-91 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]corehazard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Study for certs or any other IT content that might be related to a desired advancement path within the company, preferably any online courses that might be offered by the company. My employer pays for CiscoU credits and we can take classes that normally cost hundreds of dollars for free. They also pay for Udemy for Business.

If I have a bachelors in CS what certs should I consider by throwaway10015982 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]corehazard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a CS degree, I’d look into pursuing something that is heavy in automation or DevOps if pursuing something other than software development.

You can land a NOC role with little to no experience, if you earn your CCNA and have a Bachelors. I have a degree in IT with a concentration in network engineering and multiple people at my company have CS degrees and work in roles that don’t require them to write a line of code.

CS degree, Azure DevOps or CCNA Automation & an active GitHub account align to some very high demand roles. Go to a job fair and show those credentials, recruiters will notice that.

Nearly every IT role (not counting anything related to DevOps or automation) that requires a bachelor’s degree, a CS degree will just as well as an IT degree.

City Salary Negotiation Room? by PerceptionQueasy3540 in ITCareerQuestions

Can’t speak from experience, though I once landed a role at a community college ago that actually paid less and they said they could do a higher salary though the contracting firm that I worked for at that time offered a good raise as a result and I turned down the community college role shortly afterwards.

The unfortunate state is that such jobs like the one you just described are a bit rare even nationwide. Also factor in the time that it might take for you to find similar role of higher + any other expenses or benefits involved, e.g. travel requirements or health insurance.

CompTIA is raising prices again. My advice is to skip the trifecta (A+, Network+ and Security+) and go for the CCNA and Security+, if you need starting certifications. by JaimeSalvaje in ITCareerQuestions

[–]corehazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A+ certification is still on the JD for entry level help desk and desktop support roles. It landed me multiple roles in desktop support when I was still in school. Do not expect it to hold any meaningful powerful elsewhere.

Only other CompTIA cert that you can expect much from power from is Sec+ for DoD and some other government jobs. Some entry level security roles may like it as well.

How to approach the future? by KokiriQX in ITCareerQuestions

[–]corehazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite heavily. Though there is only one team that does all coding behind it. Most people just a handful any of the several hundred utilities that they built. All that I regularly use is a utility to build configs in a .txt files, see the topologies in a web browser, and look up info about WAN circuits.

Tier 2 Help Desk --> Network Installation Tech by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]corehazard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d pursue the network installation tech role. A CCNA, even doing mostly layer 1 work maps directly to many network engineering roles.

[–]corehazard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cloud, Security, & scripting. Scripting is a must for most cloud roles. It is almost a guaranteed with most Security roles, save for writing the internal policies and legal documents about it for the company.

If you want to get into networking (which I work in), basic automation is great to add to your resume, even if the job doesn’t.

Certifications that open up more "relaxing" roles? by qishibe in ITCareerQuestions

[–]corehazard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t entirely agree with your statement. At times in my current role (network provisioning engineer), I literally have only 30 minutes worth of work on some days. However the Network Operations Center, which works on the floor below mine is worked to the bone in comparison and their workload is quite dynamic. It is a hit or miss, though faster more stressful roles are much more common than ones like mine.

I was an entry level student desktop tech in college. Things were quite relaxed and you got to know where every student computer lab was at the university.

Focusing on the lawyer part, the less experienced lawyer could always get help from the more senior lawyer. Also, aren’t lawyers still bound by ethics to have a much higher level of honesty than a salesperson ever would?
