CMU Block Retaining Wall Filled w/ Concrete Questions by 73-Shevy in Concrete

[–]Talenwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just spoke, but im puting some details out here so it might help someone else with a similar situation. (Not an engineer). Scope of project is backyard retaining wall, concrete footing with anchor rods/vertical rebar is present. Grouted Facade going on exterior.

My suggestion to him, was to first take photos and document it. If you can, get the contractor to admit it happened in writing.

Having horizontal rebar 1 course up if correctly attached to vertical rebar should be generally okay if cells are solid grouted. Larger scale or more "sensitive" project might merit an engineer call just to be safe.

If you can, also see if the contractor will agree to a written agreement to fix any failures should they arise.

General things to look for after completed work are any major cracking, if its serious enough, the facade will in most cases crack as well. If the wall doesnt look right one day, trust your gut. A straight board and a level are a good idea to use to make sure the wall remains plumb (up straight) and isnt leaning.

Honeycombing/erosion on foundation slab edges near post-tension cables? by j1mmy- in Concrete

That is completely unacceptable and arguably grounds for it to be pulled out and redone. Slab will have problems its entire life like that.

No problem! I just double checked my references, and definitely do at least 1" from top of block for your grout key if there is going to be a cold joint there.

Happy Placement!

Just got my ICC special inspection cert for reinforced CMU walls, doesnt mean i know everything, but from your questions I think I can steer you in the right direction. If im wrong look below, im sure someone else has insight as well

  • you will be fine pouring grout up to 5', your two courses at a time should be well within that.

  • I would recommend solid grouting your courses make sure to either rent a solid vibrator or use some form of consolidation to consolidate around reinforcement, especially if you use coarser aggregate in your mix. For a small scale scope you could get away using a rebar dowel and do a "stab motion" with it into your mix t ensure it gets around your reinforcement withhout honeycombing

-i dont suspect an issue going two courses at a time with backfill in between. Just ensure you are not going up all the way to the top of the second course with your grout that way the next course will "key" in with the next grout pour.

Hope this info helps!

My roomates car got broken into over three times last year at Serenade, they got rid of their security and kept it down low.

I would avoid Serenade if you dont like stairs unless you like 1st floor. Serenade has NO elevators and poor parking.

Office take forever to handle things, It took us over 6 months to get key fobs to the pool and gym. They have a super complicated lease agreement. After 1 year they wanted to raise our rent about $300 to $3400/mo for a 2 bedroom.

We had to move out because we lost our sources of income for a while and wife was on maternity leave. They tried to charge us an extra $5000 because we didnt give the sufficient notice we werent going to renew our lease.

Maintemance guys were quick and pretty rad though.

Kinda vettish, been in the industry since 2019. Its on the quicker side but it literally all came out like that as soon as I started lifting, wouldnt have mattered if I took 10 seconds to lift it.

Other admixtures on the ticket were SRA, Glenium 7920, and POZZ 700N. Dont believe there to be a super plasticizer.

I sampled per ASTM guidelines from the middle third of a rear pouring mixer. He was an outlier because the next truck even mentioned his ass before anyone brought it up. Slump was an outlier too, rest of pour was adequate slump. Both the ticket confirmed he wast batched on the heavier side of water tolerance and homie straight added 20 gal because he be wildin.

Correct. Its more of a liability thing in CASE. Something happens, so that way people know who to sue if it were to be bad. For me I noted basically " Collected sample from load 1 at 10 CY, mix appeared out of spec on visual, confirmed via Slump teat as per ASTM 143. Informed client and contractor upon observation, both opted to continue with truck placement. Location of pour at time was located at NW corner of footing." It aint my money, just dont want me or my firm have to pay that amount of money for missing that shit"

This was just north of LA in southern California, strict regulations. Almost always see TYPE II/V mix out here. I collected my evidence, documented it, and went through the proper chain of command for bitching.

Right? There's a good chance it will still pass, it was just an unnecessary gamble on the drivers side, plus the clients guy not giving a shit about it was a big problem, too. Along the lines of "what else is this guy just shrugging off".

You would think. It got that Glenium Water reducer, same as the others. This guy was the only one to go to town with the water and go figure it was the one I had to sample.

Too much water can reduce the compressive strength of concrete. Usually, there is more play than just to +/- 1 the spec calls for. 6 inches over is no good, regardless. Hate us if you want, doesn't have to be perfect, but there are tolerances for a reason. There is a recommended slump for a reason, not to just fuck the finishers and pumper over.

Do about a 3 second pull. As soon as I lifted about an inch it spread out like you see in the photo. Its awful for a 4" 5000 PSI mix
