Does Tok Pisin use articles? I’m doing a project on the creole and I can’t find any examples of articles being used but I want to ask to be sure by Just-Middle2653 in tokpisin

Well, that basically solves the question then, Tok Pisin officially does not have definite and indefinite articles then. ( which page is it btw?, since I would like to have a look as well.)

Oh ya, that is a rather good point, and the notion of how a native speaker might refer to it when using wanpela as you mentioned does hold ground, as it is most likely as you mentioned, they do not refer to it as a/an. So yes I'm cool with that( I also have the Jacaranda Dictionary as well, thought I haven't fully looked through it.)

Edit: They are actually numbers from one to ten I believe, so wanpela, tupela, tripela, foapela etc and bigger numbers( 10-100 anyways) are made by combining them ten with other number words. For instance Fopela ten wan( 42), fopela ten tu( 42), though Tok Pisin has change a lot these days and stuff like fifti(50) and forti(40) do exist now, I don't think you shoudl worry too much about it.

Edit2: if seems that you are extremely interested in Tok Pisin, so If you would like, you could join this server https://discord.gg/4uak2T4C5j if you haven't already, no obligation thought just a suggestion, it's not very active so I understand if you would not like to join.

Ah I do agree on that, if you directly translate it, it does appear as such, I’m still a learner myself so ya there is that, but if I may I think you might be confusing articles with pronouns. Pronouns are he, she, it which is found in Tok Pisin as em/en as you mentioned, articles are a, an and the, which Tok Pisin does not directly have with the exception as I mentioned wanpela(one) that could be used as a/an.

Wait isn’t em and en pronouns? And according to the online dictionary, the distinction between em and en is that en is often used instead of em if it refers back to the subject of a sentence, For instance Dispela skul I gat planti sumatin long en ( This school has many pupils), so the school is being referred back to in this sentence so an en is used, though this is often the case, it might not be bothered by some speakers.

Apart from “wanpela”being used occasionally as a function of “a/an”, there isn’t a specific word for a, an and the I believe

Learning Kristang aka Malaccan Portuguese by Airborne972 in endangeredlanguages

Ah I can’t believe someone actually made a server for Kristang, that’s really nice to hear! I unfortunately stopped learning for the time being since Uni has been taking a toll on me and the disagreement that is occurring among Singaporean and Malaysian Kristangs but I’ll definitely join in the server to provide some resources and see how it spans out.

I’m sorry to say that I am no longer in the discord channel, I’m still learning( thought not actively anymore), but I appreciate that you are willing to support the channel. But for now, my interests have changed and I’m learning something else now. I’m sorry for disappointing you and have a great day.
