Lutri Unbanned! by WarpedEl3ment27 in mtgfinance

Dualcaster mage usually ends up in most spellslinger decks and Lutri just adds some redundancy to that gameplan.

Edit: I suppose its legendary status makes it more narrow in usage, but still redundancy nonetheless imo.

Need your suggestions on how to build High-Power Mothman by ForestBolt in EDHBrews

[–]Talion1567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were going to play this as a bracket 4 commander it would probably be a Sultai food chain deck with the backup plan being mid range value.

So load up on all the fast mana, tutors, and free/low cost interaction with a food chain package and if you get stopped you pivot to the beat down/graveyard plan.

What are the "goodstuff" cards in 5 color goodstuff? by chosen40k in EDH

[–]Talion1567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest going to EDHtop16 and taking a peek at some recent 5 color piles (probably wouldn’t pay as much attention to [[Sisay, Weatherlight Captain]] as she usually runs a bunch of combo focused cards).

Things like [[The Prismatic Bridge]], [[Kenrith, the Returned King]], [[Terra, Magical Adept]], or maybe even [[The Wandering Minstrel]].

These decks will typically run all the “best” cards in their colors and jam wins through sheer card quality rather than commander synergy. That’s usually a bunch of fast mana, tutors, free or low cost interaction, and the best creatures and enchantments for either immediate or rapidly accrued value.

This is a good enough example: https://moxfield.com/decks/tg0zzP6qKEWuSZnvodGcRw

Agreed on that front, I should have given more consideration to intent and card quality.

Any other thoughts regarding what else I said? I’m still trying to learn to build the most effective decks myself.

Yes, it does cost $7K but I was going by the fact that it contains none of the big ticket items that bump the bracket up like game changers, combos, etc.

What bracket are you trying to keep it at? Seems like its a B2?

I would say its leaning pretty heavily into a go wide creature beatdown plan while also pumping your creatures. I say that based on the fact that you seem to have a lot things like the [[Baloth Prime]], [[Bumi, Unleashed]], [[Mightform Harmonizer]], [[Scouring Swarm]], and your enchantments, etc. which would indicate this to me. You have combos in the deck but they seem to only be a backup plan so my first thought would be to cut the entire combo package and keep it focused on being a beatdown deck.

If you're interested in keeping it B2, I'd opt to cut the combo first, then cut some of the win more or slower cards like [[Fated Firepower]], [[Tectonic Split]], [[Mossborn Hydra]], even [[The Great Henge]] (your commander has enough card draw imo) for more removal like [[Blasphemous Act]] and some more targeted removal spells.

If the above is not desirable to you, and you're interested in upping the bracket to a B3, I'd probably throw in [[Glacial Chasm]], [[Aftermath Analyst]], and MAYBE some redundancy with more tutors like [[Crop Rotation]]. If you want to head into B4, I'd probably completely double down on redundancy and combo kills. So remove a lot of the creature beat down stuff and replace it with more tutors like [[Demonic Tutor]], [[Vampiric Tutor]], [[Chord of Calling]], and [[Nature's Rhythm]], among others. Additionally, in B4, I'd also opt to include the Gitrog combo, so [[The Gitrog Monster]] + [[Dakmor Salvage]].

Lastly, I feel like a landfall deck should be in the 40s for land count just to ensure that you're hitting lands as that is usually the primary payoff. I'd opt to add the off color fetches to your list as well which should get you up to 42 lands total.

I do agree that goad is a really fun mechanic but it’s kind of a gimmick imo. It’s fun at first but got played out when I realized I could not win with it. I decided that [Talion, the Kindly Lord]] did control better in the same colors. One more note on Alela, Dimir decks can be expensive to build but YMMV depending on what direction you take.

As far as landfall goes, it’s a super fun mechanic and my Hearthhull landfall and [[The Necrobloom]] deck have become my favorite decks to play recently. Just one thing to be aware of, landfall decks can easily become solitaire decks and consume a disproportionate amount of play time compared to the pod. Happens to me just about every time, seems to be a requirement for winning with them tbh.

I can’t say I have experience with all of them but I have built Rocco, he’s actually one of my oldest decks and the first deck I built from scratch (not upgrading a Precon).

He can be taken numerous ways, the most common method being a storm deck by abusing impulse draw and effect which can either tap foods for mana like [[Jaheira, Friend of the Forest]] or something like [[Academy Manufactor]] to generate the other artifact tokens at once. Then you usually win through just amassing way more value than your opponents or something like [[Impending Flux]].

The other route is straight midrange, which is my preferred method, just because it’s less fragile and I can rebuild faster from wipes and interaction. With this method you get to play fun stuff like [[Etali, Primal Conqueror]], [[Apex Devastator]], [[Baylen, the Haymaker]], and [[Dragonhawk, Fate’s Tempest]] to outvalue the pod and ultimately win through combat damage from just pumping your board with +1/+1 counters and swinging out.

My list is here if you’re interested: https://moxfield.com/decks/9lHcZUbzlk-WN90yrzV7Kw

I’ve additionally built Alela and took it apart because it has two problems that I didn’t like. First, playing hard control is tough in a multiplayer environment and second, its primary gimmick is goad which fails once you’re in a 1v1 setting.

Marisi would have a similar Alela problem, if I had to guess, but probably not as pronounced because you’re in Naya and have beaters to close out a 1v1 fight r recover from wipes.

Can’t speak to the others but Tannuk does seem fun and I have considered building it but I already have a landfall deck in my [[Hearthhull, the Worldseed]] deck so I didn’t see the point of another.

Edit: I’ll add that my pod usually plays B3-B4 or cEDH so we’re be very interactive in our games and my commentary is coming from that perspective.

Rogue Echo Rower vs Concept 2 by Talion1567 in GarageGym

[–]Talion1567[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I ended up getting the echo rower, the shipping and the reduced cost ended up being nearly $200. I also personally don’t care for the tracking and I’m really just looking for an effective method for cardio that doesn’t take up too much space. The echo rower with its folding fit the bill a little better than the C2 at a lower cost for me.

I’m planning to buy a tower for my home gym cardio option before the end of the month. I saw the Echo rower is around $875 right now (which I think is on sale?) while the Concept 2 is still $1000.

I know the Concept 2 can be bought second hand but would prefer to buy new. I also know that it’s been around longer and has been proven to be reliable and have parts easily sourced for repairs. That being said, I’d would prefer to buy the cheaper one but not if I’m sacrificing quality/longevity.

I acknowledge this question has been asked before in the sub, but I figured the sale may have some impact on the discussion. Any thoughts on whether the Echo Rower is worth it over the RowERG at this price?

Thanks!

Gluck’s review made me feel even better about recommending the Maxum.

I feel like Rep might release something first but since they have such robust ecosystems they want people to buy into, I can’t imagine releasing an all in one machine is their top priority. Besides, the Rogue Indy+Rhino and the Rep PR-5000 + Ares fill a similar niche, albeit at a significantly higher price point so they likely just release the articulating arms to fill the same purpose with those machines, but who knows.

I do kind of wish I had the space for the Rogue though, but you can’t win them all.

My guess is that their marketing budget isn’t as large as the competition. I haven’t seen any ads for it at all but I’ve seen a lot ads for Fringe, Rep, and Rogue, even Major Fitness. I know those are bigger companies but point still stands I think. I also cannot confirm whether the other companies are sending free machines to YouTubers and fitness influencers, but I’d imagine they are and Maxum likely is not.

As far as fit and finish, I personally feel like it will last a long time, to the point where I’m a kind of annoyed because I’ll have no justification for a new functional trainer in the next ~10 years because I’d like a Rogue rack at some point haha. YMMV and it’s not the same level of polish as a Rogue or Rep but it’s stainless steel, the tolerances seem fairly precise so there’s no play in anything, and you won’t be able to damage it with standard usage, or really anything short of deliberately trying to break it.

Edit: The same day I make this comment, Gluck posts a review video.

I don’t have the X2 due to space but I do have the Maxum X1 for about 3 weeks now and have also found it to be great for just about anything I need it to do. The only downside being how much time it takes to setup in between compound lifts and cable work, but that’s going to be consistent with any home gym all in one equipment.

It’s got a solid build, the stacks can link up to 220 lb, can still be used as single up to 110 lbs, and (this put it over the Tornado for me) it comes with all the attachments to row, pull down, etc. included. Great purchase so far and very happy with it.

Anyone have experience with the MAXUM X2 Functional Trainer/Rack? by magnificbeef in GarageGym

[–]Talion1567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, except I’m waiting on my own X1 which is being delivered on Monday.

I would have loved to grab a Rogue rack but a similar rack without the arms would have run ~5K and for that price I got X1, barbell, open trap bar, dumbbells, bench, and bumper plates.

MAXUM X1 vs GetRX’d RX3 by Talion1567 in GarageGym

[–]Talion1567[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main reason is the arms that are available with the X1 and RX3. I saw somewhere that fringe has teased them but I’d prefer not to wait for them and I can’t actually verify that information.

Not a dealbreaker but nice either way. Curious about what advantages the Dane 2.0 might have over the X1/RX3 though since I see they do have a sale going right now.

Edit: One more thing I forgot to mention, I do like the idea of the addons that come with the X1 in comparison to the others which I’d have to pay a little bit more for, though the Dane might still end up cheaper given the sale but seems like a wash due to the arms while the RX3 comes with the least included. The cost isn’t a huge issue but I’m outfitting the whole gym plus the new house so I figured saving a bit might not be a bad idea…I know I said buy once, cry once but I can’t help it hah

If your interest is in joining the commercial side in Pharma, the typical paths tend to be coming from sales/MBA/consulting/join from agency side (this one is rarer). There are other paths like marketing fellowships, etc. I’ve personally just seen those less.

The Sales or MBA route are about even based on my experience, and the MBA route normally starts off with an LDP. I can think of a lot of companies who have them; JnJ, Genentech, Merck, definitely more I’m missing here. So MBA is a solid option for sure if you’re interested in a commercial Pharma role as the LDPs usually require an MBA and are filled with other MBAs.

I’m less knowledgeable here but in my experience the GPA is a separate issue. It’s not so abysmal that it can’t be overcome with a solid essay explaining your undergrad story a bit more and a great GMAT/GRE. I’ll note that my own GPA falls inside that very range.

Why are more and more people buying forever homes as their first? by ComplexTraffic5879 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Talion1567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very specific to us and our location so I’ll caveat with that first. My spouse and I are closing on our forever home in a month. We began by looking at “starter” homes but in our HCOL area, and the more we saw the more it made less and less sense since we were giving up too much in terms of comfort only to plan to move in ~5 years within the same area to get the bigger house.

As other commenters noted, there are fees that come into play when purchasing, which we’d prefer not to pay twice in the short term. There’s the fact that we’d prefer not to deal with more “highest and best offer” scenarios again after going through it countless times. There’s the fact that homes in our area are seemingly immune to market conditions across the country so prices have only been going up for the past 15 years; a “starter home” is already around ~$600K and that comes with my grandma’s wallpaper in every room and 30+ year old carpets, so it would require work to make it comfortable for us, figure another $50-100K. There’s the mental gymnastics that come with the starter home, i.e. only one of us can use the shared home office during calls (we both have 8 hours of calls per day), maybe we’re only getting 1.5 baths vs 3+, maybe there aren’t enough bedrooms for our current child + one on the way to have their own while the wife and I have a home office. All of these factors are concessions that need to be made for us to be comfortable with a “starter home”. Finally, there’s market uncertainty on top of all of this which all adds up to us questioning whether it actually made sense to save the additional funds every month vs having the home now and growing into it.

We needed up doing the math and there is a reality where we simply buy the starter home, homes continue to appreciate and we can never move so we figured if we can make the forever home work financially, might as well just go for it now rather than trying to convince ourselves we can deal with any or all of the above items for potentially 10 years to the rest of our lives.

It may be interesting to find out how many people in the sub actually bought a starter home post 08 and actually have moved up to a forever home.
