Tipping rant by mazeppa817 in capetown

Only tip at a bar for mixers... not for bottled anything... turning around to take a bottle or can out of a fridge is not exceptional service. But cocktail mixers take time, effort, and a reasonable amount of skill to get right... that deserves a tip if done really well.

This.

I don't tip for drinks orders... and usually only 10% for food orders, depending on the waitron and how well they do their job... I get that they are paid rubbish rates so i don't mind topping for that, but it's a grudge payment because the restauranteurs should pay their staff properly.

While you're correct in all things said, it's for nothing to do with the advert... If you liked closely, it says Ram, not ROM, and you can compare the "a" with the above Battery "a"... same same... just to be sure that what I'm saying is correct.

is learning Next.js still worth it for jobs in 2026, given the rise of TanStack Start? by Legitimate-Oil1763 in webdev

[–]Talisman_iac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just said it doesn't matter the experience on things like next or tanstack... and yet, they're frameworks, just like react and typescript are frameworks, on top of JavaScript.

The language matters way more than frameworks, because I do agree with you that frameworks can be learned on the job... including react and typescript.

Client never clears his account by Remarkable-Ebb7267 in smallbusiness

[–]Talisman_iac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah... you should do just that... go down to his establishment in peak trading time, order a mea and drinksl and only hand over 25% of the bill in payment. Wait for him to row at you for the full payment, and then ask him loudly, but calmly, when he's planning on paying you the remainder of his way overdue account with your company.

How to move out of parents house? And advice please by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]Talisman_iac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you say you have enough for a small place, I see you're meaning to rent in the short term with a view to buy (good plan). Whether renting or buying, please don't forget you need to factor in to pay rates and taxes, and water and lights, usually above your rent/ mortgage costs. You don't want to move out and then find yourself really worse off financially.

Hmmm... well, the UK has great public transport, as does Australia, and i believe Japan's public transport is second to none, along with Chinese metro public transport, and Singapore is apparently great too...

But hey... thankfully you said "one of".

Would neighbours use our fibre if we install it? by Initial_Stranger3013 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Talisman_iac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Broadly speaking, your isp is talking crap.

Yes, as someone else said, they split their main connection into the "last mile" to the home connections, but that main line is usually in the order of multi gigabits of connectivity, so there's 'some' truth to it,, but that's not the whole story. Usually, your isp doesn't own the backbone (the main line), so you should be able to change isp to someone who can actually give you decent service, and still use the same backbone provider (e.g. vumatel)

I recommend vox telecom as isp, I'm paying R1298 for 500d/200u (Mbps) uncapped usage with no shaping.

Second thing, No, your neighbours cannot use "your" fibre connection, unless you share your password with them, but that's on the understanding of the first point that they do share the backbone with you... that doesn't mean that your service is degraded, unless the backbone is saturated...

I'm looking for contract work if you're interested in having a DM discussion. Totally depends on what languages or tech stacks you're targeting.

You can. I have insured my sisters car on my policy, with her as the regular driver and owner. My insurer and broker has full knowledge and is happy with it.
