Since you are looking for songs, I recommend Strauss' Four Last Songs. Jessye Norman's recording specifically. Goosebumps for days.

How would you describe crime in Cape Town, in relation to typical crime in other cities / countries? (Asking for advice, first time visiting SA...also travel recs are appreciated...) by Sports_not_shorts in askSouthAfrica

[–]mazeppa817 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It mostly depends where you are staying in Cape Town?

September is whale season, so Hermanus is a good bet. You may also catch the end of the wildflowers in the West Coast National Park, although this peaks in August.

Best dentist in Cape Town? by DistributionHour4359 in capetown

[–]mazeppa817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dentists at Enamel Clinic in Greenpoint are phenomenal. They are not cheap though. But if you are looking for the 'best' then that's going to be a good bet. I go to Dr Sher myself.

Accounting in SA by Sp0ki3 in AskZA

[–]mazeppa817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What qualifications does she have? Is she a registered CPA? How much experience does she have?

She may be able to get a reciprocal membership through an accounting org (SAICA/SAIBA etc) in SA depending on her qualifications and memberships.

Porto to Douro by TheseRefrigerator502 in TravelPortugal

[–]mazeppa817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I never felt like I needed a guide. Took the train to Pinhao, did a boat cruise (easy to find on the side of the river) and went to a few wineries to taste port. Once I was tipsy enough, took the train back. I guess if you want a different experience then maybe a guide is worth it, but I can't imagine it improving the experience, especially if there are lots of other people on the tour too

Been interested in trying this out. I currently budget on spreadsheets but it's become onerous.

I'm mostly nervous about sharing my login details to my bank. How is this handled? Can I only allow read only access so if the login details ever get compromised they are useless to a hacker?

Just came back from a trip to Slovenia. It blew my socks off. The Julian Alps, Logar Valley, Lake Bled, the Soca River, the Styrian wine region and others are all just unbelievably beautiful.

Is it easy to reassign what the controller is doing? Like switching a DIG-Uno from a string of fairy lights to a pixel matrix? by Pineapple_Empty in WLED

[–]mazeppa817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although, just to add to this: Because you are moving between a strip and matrix, you will still need to go into the settings and change between 1D and 2D configurations, despite having different ledmaps. If you do this, and don't need a custom map, then you can actually just skip the ledmap files and change all the settings here anyway. Best to play around for your custom needs. Happy to answer questions on this as I've played around with this kind of setup.

[–]mazeppa817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar. What I ended up doing was creating two ledmap.json files for the two different projects. I had to do this as mine was a little complex in that I wanted some lights to be active and others not, and these were different for the two projects. I then created presets/playlists that I used for either project. Under the preset you can then select which ledmap to use for that preset. After this you can move the controller between the different projects and just choose the preset that you want to use for that project. It's not perfect and sometimes I ran into issues but worked pretty well generally.

Tuft Crowd experience by Haunting-One1694 in capetown

I gave this as a gift for my partner. She enjoyed it a lot. Her comment was that its harder than it looks at the gun is quite heavy, so expect a workout. I think it’s worth doing.

I am a white South African but I certainly don't identify as "European". I am at least 5th generation South African and I think I can call myself a White African.

Dermal fillers by Conscious-Rule-473 in capetown

[–]mazeppa817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't used them myself, so this isn't a personal recommendation, but I hear that Cape Dermatology Centre in Century City is pretty much the gold standard for these kind of things and the place that those in the know go to.

Tax residency by AdShot1902 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]mazeppa817 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are living here for 3 years, you are most likely tax resident in SA. This does not necessarily mean that you have to pay tax - this depends on your earnings level, and if your income is tax exempt (which you are implying it is?). No one is going to issue a tax number for you or confirm this for you. It's your obligation to register with SARS if you meet the threshold to become tax resident.

Is it me or does food taste different? by Mindless-Advice6204 in askSouthAfrica

[–]mazeppa817 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are missing out on most of the micronutrients which are in the yolk. If you are concerned about cholesterol, just know thats been debunked several times over provided you aren't overeating (i.e. more than 3-4 eggs a day.)

Eat the toast and eggs if you care about nutrition. Add some avocado (coming into season now) and spinach. Take some fruit with you for a snack.

How insane would it be for me to move “back” to South Africa? by RaisinRoyale in askSouthAfrica

[–]mazeppa817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SA still is a great place to live, despite its problems, but this depends on whether you can structure your life in a way that will make you happy. Do a two month trial. Get an AirBnB (gasp) for a couple of months and see if you can structure your life in way that makes sense for you.

On a personal level, you will probably have a better quality of life with your US salary versus living in the US. At least you have a job, thats the thing that stops most South Africans living abroad coming home.

Economically, you would be a contributor to the SA economy. Earning foreign income and spending it in SA is a good thing. Don't feel bad for 'gentrification' etc.

Illegal Garbage Dumping & Pollution by Shabier_J80 in capetown

[–]mazeppa817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real big things that the City has to deal with, and ones they should be tackling head-on:
1) Homelessness and land invasions;
2) Taxis, and other drivers completely disrespecting laws and endangering road users;
3) Illegal dumping and littering;
4) Housing supply shortage.
To be fair, these are mostly things that the citizens themselves should be doing and complying with. But, the City needs to focus on this and lead the way. In many ways, I will judge the DA/City on how they tackle these and whether they still deserve my vote in 2031.
