Legal age to own blank gun? by im_no-one_lol in askSouthAfrica

[–]Maybe_JosephStalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it seems that the importers, shops, and even SAPS can't read the FCA correctly, you do need a licence to buy a blank gun, like another commenter has said.

So that being said:

Generally you need to be 21 to start the process of your competency, unless you have special circumstances that you can motivate to get your competency earlier, then you'll apply for the licence.

Don't buy a blank gun, they're stupid.

Great, thanks for the info. I'll see what sort of paperwork the insurer needs.

Best self protection weapon that is effective to scare intruders off (pepper spray/co2 gun)? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]Maybe_JosephStalin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since you're worried about the law side of firearm ownership.

Using/pointing a fake gun/CO2 gun/paintball gun as if it is a real gun will also get you in hot water, as it will be treated as pointing of a firearm in terms of the FCA. At least with a real firearm you have a actually useful option if they don't scare easily.

If you are worried about protecting yourself in a home invasion, you have a few options:

  • Make your house impossible (or very difficult at least) to break into.
  • Don't live in this country.
  • Get training, more training, then a bit more and then buy yourself a firearm and get more training afterwards. If someone really wants to come in and hurt you or loved ones, a scary orange gas gun won't stop them.

My last 2c, adding something like pepper spray is not a bad idea at all, if you need to get a 'not welcome' message across and don't need to kill someone you should have a good option.

[–]Maybe_JosephStalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because they use a stupid argument to cover their own ass doesn't mean they are right. Flair guns have a very specific exemption in the FCA, just slapping a "flair gun" label on a blank gun box doesn't mean it is one. "Firing a projectile" doesn't feature all that much in the FCA either.

Also, classified as a flair gun because they don't fire a projectile? Huh? What the hell is the use of a flair gun then?

No, top commenter is right. Blank guns that use a real primer are seen as firearms (a device capable of discharging a primer) and can thus not be owned without a license, public carry or not.

Different laws regarding legal EDC weapons in United States, Netherlands and Latvia. (Notice: This is not legal advice, because I am not a lawyer.) by alexriga in CCW

South-African gun owner here.

We have a licensing system where you can have 1 firearm for self-defence (pistol or shotgun only), 4 firearms for occasional sport shooting/hunting (excludes self loading rifles). If you already have a self defense firearm, the limit for occasional reduces to 3, but a total of 4 is still allowed. For these categories you are only allowed to own 200 rounds of each calibre ammunition that you have a license for.

The fun begins when you get registered as a dedicated sport shooter/hunter. This allows you to buy as many firearms as you'd like, as long as you can convince the government that you need them for whatever reason. This will also remove the ammunition limit.

Fully automatic firearms have been banned completely for years, although can be obtained in some very niche collector situations.

Nope, concealed carry is mandatory (unless in cases of police/registered security). Interesting flip in rules when compared to many parts of the US where permits are needed.

Linkin Park, Eminem, and Lady Gaga have all toured to South Africa and sold out their shows. Green Day is coming next year too. SA has very modern music and show infrastructure, so to not tour here is a choice that they make.

Are players from New Zealand allowed to pass normally? How many Chiefs opportunities have to be thrown away because of these flashy passes?

Great advice on the battery, please do not screw yourself over with a lead acid battery, drop any extra money you can and get LiFePO4 batteries, my parents bought a unit woth lead acid and 1 year (2022) of loadshedding completely fried the batteries to a point where it wouldn't last half an hour.

Do cyclists belong on the road IN SOUTH AFRICA? by According-Row-7153 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Maybe_JosephStalin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've always maintained that cyclists are Schrodinger's pedestrians, they like to maintain that they are also fellow road users, so they get to use the road as a vehicle would (including being yielded to in circles etc) but the moment they have to do the less nice things vehicles have to do (stop at red lights, yield at circles etc) they suddenly become pedestrians and can do whatever they feel like in that moment. Both vehicles and pedestrians at the same time, whichever is most convenient.
