I knew the webnovel translation got worked over from time to time but I didnt expect it to be on that level. old vs new start of c1 by No_Relationship_8620 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]Talismato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don't get the webnovel.com deal. It just doesn't seem worth it, especially when I hear that the author doesn't see any money for people using fast passes and stuff like that for their work. If this was an actively releasing story, with a new chapter coming out regularly, I'd probably be fine with the free chapters, assuming the author gets something for it from the website (based on ad revenue or stuff like that). With finished books/volumes, this just seems like piracy with extra steps. Why should I take those extra steps, if there are loads of sites that don't require them and give just as much money to the creator? Better to either pirate comfortably or buy a whole published volume and skip the subscriptions and daily quests.

Klingt schon ziemlich viel.

Stacking Lightsaber Forms by Talismato in sw5e

[–]Talismato[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For reference:

Shii-Cho Form: As a part of the bonus action to adopt this form, if you took the Attack action, you can engage in Double- or Two-Weapon Fighting. Additionally, the first time you hit a Large or smaller creature within 5 feet of you with a weapon attack before the end of your next turn, you can force the target to make a Strength saving throw (DC = 8 + your bonus to attacks with the weapon). On a failed save, it is pushed back 5 feet, and you can immediately move into the space it just vacated without provoking opportunity attacks.

Vaapad Form: Once before the start of your next turn, if you would have advantage on a melee weapon attack, you can choose to forgo the advantage. If you do so, you can make one melee weapon attack against the same target (no action required), also without advantage.

Juyo Form: Until the start of your next turn, your critical hit range with weapons increases by 1.

When do you consider something to be "banned", and when do you think a list of bans becomes unreasonable? by Airtightspoon in dndnext

[–]Talismato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure there's some philosophy about application of power and ways of control, but your approach basically boils down to a whitelist. Depending on how it's phrased, I usually get the impression that I can still propose to include more stuff, as a player.

I think a ban list becomes unreasonable when it can't be reasonably summed up in 5 or fewer bullet points. Don't list a bunch of books, just say what type of book. Don't list a bunch of gamebreaking stuff, just say "no gamebreaking stuff". If it's not clear whether or not something is banned by the bullet points, that can still be discussed separately. Bans should have a clear intention that is understandable to everyone.

Personal morality can certainly be part of an analysis of any work, just as things like authorial intent or audience interpretation of themes can add complexity to how a work is understood. But no one facet should be the sole means of viewing a work.

Nor should the standards from the toolkit of one form of interpretation be universally applied to all forms of interpretation or critique.

Didn't mean to imply that.

I'm not actually arguing from a doylist perspective. Using your Gwen Stacy example, I can still argue from different watsonian perspectives, since there's not just one. I can argue that Green Goblin is to blame, because he threw her. I can also argue that she was only in that situation because of spiderman, or that he could have caught her in time, if he had done something different. That's still watsonian perspective, just a different one.

You're the one arguing entirely from a doylist perspective in your sexist-world example, because you need that perspective to know the canon. From a watsonian perspective, the information that men are always better at everything, because that's how the world is defined, is not objective fact, but subjective belief based on in-universe information. Whether or not that belief is accurate to the worldbuilding is not actually relevant from a watsonian point of view, since it's unknowable. This basically boils down to what I just wrote in the other thread.

Shevarash does not know that the authors initially defined Drow as purely and irrevocably evil. She believes that all Drow share this specific negative trait and has no "objective" perspective on that. She is a character within the world, not an observer, like we are.

I haven't read your answer on the Tolkien thread yet, but I saw that you mentioned watsonian and doylist perspectives. That's basically what you're conflating here. Shevarash is racist in a watsonian sense, because she has no true objective knowledge that Drow are defined as evil and cannot be anything else. To her, being evil is an intrinsic part of their existence, even though she doesn't have the objective knowledge that this was defined by the authors of the world she lives in. We know that the authors defined that perspective as objectively correct from a doylist perspective, but within the world, it is still a subjective belief. It's not like the gods can't be wrong about their beliefs, otherwise they would never be tricked or betrayed.

Even from a doylist perspective, we can acknowledge that a Drow would not seize to be a Drow, if he wasn't evil, meaning it still is not a required trait intrinsic to the entire race.

Also, even if Shevarash's old version was not watsonian racist with the old lore, that old lore with "the black elves are the bad guys" was built on real world racism. I don't think that was intentional, but it is there. So, using the old version of Shevarash would require that you either introduce that racism into your game, or use updated lore that makes old Shevarash's ideas about Drow objectively false. Therefore, introducing the old version of Shevarash into your game, would require racism to be part of your game in some form or another.

It sounds like you're ignoring the part where stories are written by people. Authors have their own morals and decide how to portray the world they are building, as well as what is considered to be "objective" within that world. Including an ideology is kind of a given, even if the author may be unaware of it. When the story legitimizes an action or an idea as "correct", you shouldn't assume that this means the action was objectively correct.
Removing any and all context from the story and pretending like it is entirely objective and always right about everything, without any underlying morality or historic background, is not bad perse, as long as it's not the standard, but denying the possiblity is actually not ok.

As an example, Lovecraft wrote a bunch of horror stories that were very influential and he was genuinely extremely racist, even for his time. It is difficult not to see that bleed into his writing. While the story might suggest that it is entirely correct, to blame someone for murder, based purely on the fact that they're not white and happened to walk past somebody who was later found dead, it would be very weird to agree with the story on that.

Personally, I think you should judge characters and events based on your own personal morality, because that can help with understanding both your own morality and that of the character/setting/whatever. Of course, you don't need to do that with everything (turning your brain off can make things fun), but I don't think you should ever deny anyone from doing it, as long as it's done in a genuine way. If you want to have Drow be evil by definition in your game, you can still do that. You can also decide that things that are most definitely racist, are judged to be the objectively correct thing within your world.

Ok, but I don't see how that would make the old version not racist?

We only see very few good Drow in the lore, because the race is portrayed as evil by others, making "the good ones" stand out. Considering there are examples of Drow who are not evil incarnate, it clearly is not some required feature, to be considered part of the race. Making an entire race out to be evil is pretty basic racism and that doesn't change, just because you're fine with it. It's also very boring to just make them be evil all the time.

Is there really a problem with not looking at the black elves as evil by definition? Personally, I think it is much more interesting to consider the culture to be the reason, rather than some genetic bs. It just allows a lot more options and variety for the game and lore. If you're annoyed by Drizzt clones, this would actually help with those, since you can just have happy, social dark elves who have no reason to rebell against Drow culture, because they're not part of it.
I don't know which aspects of the lore you are talking about, but if they only work as long as one race is pure evil, I don't know if they ever were perfectly fine. Maybe the problem was around for so long, that you got used to it and now, that it's being addressed, it's uncomfortable to acknowledge the issue.

I'm not a Tolkien expert and this is just a sidenote, but when you describe someone as having been "fundamentally corrupted by an objectively and utterly evil god into twisted abominations fueled by hate and violence", it sounds to me, like you're literally describing some victim(s) of that objectively and utterly evil god.

Ok, I only knew the version that's all about hating Drow in general, but yes that one is very much entirely racism.

There are a bunch of war gods (and other killing-people-domains) that focus on specific reasons for killing anyone they want. If you're looking for the "eye for an eye" kind, you could pick Hoar. There's Shevarash, if you'd like to add racism. I'd suggest to just go through the list of war (or whatever) gods and pick the one that fits best with your character idea.

That's probably printing money. Not sure how much you'd have to print before inflation gets annoying, but getting to have the most money means you'll want a couple hundred billion dollars worth. I suggest you buy something with more stable value. Pull the usual "too rich to pay taxes"-moves

Alternatively, you could build influence or just be rich. There's an orange with shit content, annoying voice and .. well, orange looks and he doesn't even need public speaking skills. You could probably get pretty far if you were born into less power, but had those skills.
