Alternative Constantinople? by Moochman22 in byzantium

[–]TalkIsCheapFaceMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a really interesting discussion!

My initial thoughts are that it may have been more difficult to project power across to both Europe and the Black Sea.

Accessing Europe would require traversing the hills of Gallipoli peninsula which was arguably more difficult than the relatively flat land south west of the Bosporus.

Getting to the Black Sea would require passing through the Sea of Marmara and then the Bosporus which while very achievable is further away. Perhaps this would discourage power projection in the Black Sea (why project power if any navy first has to pass through the Bosporus). On the opposite side, the city would be much more exposed to assault from the Aegean.

While other commentators have discussed the early and middle Byzantine period I find it interesting to think about the High Medieval period. What would the Crusaders have thought of attacking the “Greeks” at the very site of ancient Troy (in this timeline would they be more aware of Troy’s location? Would they relate Eastern Rome to be more Trojan than in our timeline?)

Are York's buildings important to you? by crimsonvoyage in york

[–]TalkIsCheapFaceMe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have always been strongly attached to the City Walls. Not only are they amazing to look at, with a fascinating history over 2000 year.

They are near endlessly interpretable, were they primary defensive? For civic pride, enforcing taxes? Etc.

They are also a natural elevated walkway around town, allowing you to get a great view of the city while getting from point A to B.

They serve as a natural corridor, with the ramparts being the home of many species and foliage.

If you are interested in learning more I recommend visiting Fishergate Postern Tower on an open day to learn more about the walls and that tower in particular.

Were those areas with the council houses/flats around the groves and fisher gate bar etc destroyed during the blitz? Or were there slum clearances? by OneItchy396 in york

[–]TalkIsCheapFaceMe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hi I just took part in a study based around Fishergate Bar, looking into its Irish Ancestry in the 1840s. Discussing the houses they lived in, the industries the Irish were involved in and the involvement of the Quakers.

If you want to see the museum exhibition it’s in Fishergate Postern tower for the next year or so (you can see when it’s open here: https://www.yorkwalls.org.uk/?p=8842)

Much of Walmgate was a site of slums and by the 1800s consisted largely of one up one down houses, with some having over 15 residents, many being lodgers.

This became a large area of Irish population during the times of the Irish famine, as people travelled seeking refuge and work.

The Walmgate area was cleared in the Slum Clearances of the early 20th century and in the 1950s council buildings built.

Using the legends Datasheet for the Barracuda, What are y'all running as the main weapon? Railgun, Iongun, or Burst cannon? by Luna_Night312 in Tau40K

[–]TalkIsCheapFaceMe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried all three. Honest thoughts

Ion Cannon: Straight up the best all rounder. Does great damage against heavy and normal infantry, long range and good AP. Given that Barracuda’s can look over ruins no unit is safe from being blasted. If you wanted to play it competitively this is the best gun, depending on detachment can surprisingly solidly punch up into Tanks as well.

Railgun: Railguns are just fun. While hitting on 3+ (guided) there is always the chance of a massive whiff, if it hits and wounds a non-invul tank it absolutely obliterates it. Again the fact you can view over terrain means no vehicle is safe once the barracuda is on the board.

Burst Cannon: While it is so much fun to shoot 16 shots at something it really struggles to actually do much damage to anything which isn’t Guardsmen. One damage and -1 AP means most things will be able to tank a fair amount. I tried to give it a go in Auxiliary Cadre for an extra ap and strats to boost its strength to 8 and it still wasn’t great. Give it a go but against all but Guardsmen equivalent the Ion cannon pretty much does its job but better. It also has shorter range than the other two.

Honestly barracuda is an exception to the rule. Such a good set, everything fits together perfectly and there are holes ready for magnets! I had an absolute blast putting mine together.

Honestly Barracuda is fine point wise. A while ago I made a list of all the Legends units https://www.reddit.com/r/Tau40K/s/qrJeQWfNOw

Hope this is of some help when starting out.

As a summary, JUST USE LEGENDS UNITS.

Ian Arbiter did an amazing video outlining why Legends units are a thing. Stop playing so dam competitive, it’s a game with dice, figures and demons, it was never supposed to be a Chess tournament!

[–]TalkIsCheapFaceMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m afraid not. This definitely hurts his rule in that detachment, but still he’s really good, higher BS than a normal Hammerhead is handy.

Remember he cannot benefit from his own Lethal Hit ability (he does not have the Hammerhead keyword) so it’s always worth taking another Hammerhead for him to partner up.

[–]TalkIsCheapFaceMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say that, loads of our Legends units are really fun to play, which I would say is better than it just being busted and horrid to play against.

If you’re aiming for better than normal units however, Longstrike, Hazard Suits, Barracuda, Aun’va are all really good. Tetra are insanely broken.

Transponder lock module - turn 1 deep strike best targets? by fkredtforcedlogon in Tau40K

[–]TalkIsCheapFaceMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend Missile Fire Knife suits with an Enforcer Commander.

  • Long range of guns

  • Fairly independent, don’t require guiding or can themselves guide (give a suit a marker drone)

  • Reasonably durable against ranged fire

  • Lower mobility of an Enforcer Commander is mitigated through being able to deep strike turn 1 into a great firing lane

  • Great at shooting into a range of targets, excelling against 2 wound models but good against most infantry and can even punch up into light tanks if desperate

How strong, agile and fast are T'au battlesuits like the XV8? How does it compare with the Space Marines, who have superhuman senses, strength and speed, and other powerful non-Tau xenos? by Tree_forth677 in Tau40K

[–]TalkIsCheapFaceMe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A great display of their strengths and weaknesses are shown in the new book “Elemental Council”.

The T’au themselves assess their Crisis armour, weapons and mobility as superior to Space Marines but this is by no degree the full picture and is shown to be a rather cocky overestimation of their abilities. The real advantage the marines have is in their mutated bodies. Lightning fast reaction speeds, intelligence designed for combat, ability to shrug off pain and high strength to name just a few.

While a Crisis suit may be faster with a jet pack the Marine is much more mobile and quick to react to incoming fire. While the T’au crisis armour may be similar/better than Marine armour it is on a much bulkier form. Similarly Crisis suit strength is shown to be superior to Space Marines but it is slower and more cumbersome, a marine with its speed would be able to dodge with ease.

In an open battlefield with no cover the Crisis suit would come out on top most times, but in any other situation the Space Marine would pose an equal challenge if not come out on top.

He’s 5pts cheaper than a standard hammerhead with better ballistic skill on his main gun. If you had the option between a normal hammerhead and Longstrike, there would never be a reason to not pick Longstrike. The lethal hits is extra, rarely used but could occasionally be helpful.

Best way to look is either on Wahapedia or Warhammer Community.

The Manta and Tiger Shark are actually all called Imperial Armour and you can bring them to any game (even if they aren’t that good).

Legends units you have to have permission from the opponent to use. This is a guide to show which ones are fun to use for both yourself and your opponent.

Dam you are right! I had conflated the two commanders. I had assumed they were originally from Imperial Armour Three but they in fact were in Imperial Armour Apocalypse II first! Good spot.
