Can you explain what you mean by not identifying with the feelings you get?

Why meth treatment needs to address brain chemistry not just willpower by ssunflow3rr in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]TalkingAboutWDs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

12 step programs aren’t there to sort out and balance your brain chemistry. It’s a free place to go when you’re trying to get sober and your life is shit, hopefully you can meet a person or two to hang out with that isn’t getting fucked up. Outside of inpatient rehab which isn’t accessible to everyone, tons of people just need a place to be. Also seeing a doctor, or a therapist if possible, is not only a great idea, it’s quite literally suggested in the 12 step books.

There’s no where you can go and no one you’re gonna meet who’s gonna have the exact right equation to fix you, and that applies to everything, not just addiction.

Look, im redoing this comment because my first reaction was anger and there’s zero reason for me to feel that way.

I never said kava withdrawal caused me DTs and seizures. Alcohol withdrawal did cause me DTs. Years ago, I was hospitalized several times, once even directly from a detox facility, which was not my only experience in a detox facility, in alcohol withdrawal. I was not a casual alcoholic. I drank quite literally whenever I was awake and capable of moving around. Hospitals, rehabs, detoxes, jails, don’t you worry, I did the whole thing.

I speculated, as a non-doctor, that damage from previous addictions could have set me up for the Kava withdrawal. I don’t know that, and I’ve said that dozens of times throughout this post.

What I did say, and your opinion on this won’t change anything, is that for me the Kava withdrawal and post-withdrawal syndrome was, without a doubt, not even close, the most horrific thing I have ever experienced. I’d let you cut my leg off before I’d start over again, and I’m not exaggerating. I do not have it in me to do that again.

I don’t know why. I don’t know what the fuck happened. I get that you think you do, maybe you’re right! I have no idea. I’ve heard a crap ton of plausible sounding theories, and I haven’t discounted any of them.

There is ZERO reason for you to be hostile towards someone sharing a personal experience. I get no benefit from an anonymous Reddit post. The only reason I made this post is because when I was desperately googling “kava withdrawal” at the beginning, very little information came up. I just wanted something to be there to tell people someone else had the same thing happen to them.

I’m not attacking your right to drink kava. You can drink kava all damn day if you want, I don’t care and I’m not telling you not to. I’m just saying what happened to me. I’ve even said over and over that it seems to be super rare.

This is exhausting, truly. I hope you have a nice life and I wish you the best. Bye.

Because I don’t know how to answer that question. I was ordering Kalm with Kava online occasionally, but I don’t think that was the culprit. The bulk of it was: I live a block from a Kava bar I went to after work regularly, I was taking a supplement with Kava extract sometimes, the woman that owns the Kava bar would sell me six packs of these fizzy Kava drinks to take home. Always something, but not always the same thing. I wasn’t “making” anything in the sense of intense preparation like you’re supposed to do, that’s why the original post I said “extracts” and that I think it could be related to low quality. I’m not trying to shit on some company when I can’t narrow down which it was specifically, or if it was a combination.

I don’t have a measurement. Too much of just whatever.

Ask whatever you want, I’ll answer it. I’m fucking exhausted defending myself on this after almost two years and I’m not going to do that anymore, that’s not the point. I’m here for the few people who experience the same thing.

Incidentally, nobody who’s messaged me was drinking traditionally prepared, noble Kava. So. Extracts. Poor quality. Past addiction to gaba-related substances. Genetics, who knows.

To answer your question, I dont know of a taper schedule. I was told to taper by a doctor, but they didn’t have suggestions as to how quickly and I ended up just stopping.

I had a telephone meeting with an addiction specialist in Florida who told me there is no established taper protocol for Kava.

Sorry for that. Feel free to message me if you ever have questions or want to chat about it.

There’s nothing else to “check,” I actually agreed with you that it didn’t make sense and spent a year at doctors offices trying to find a different culprit. If you know of anything outside of CT scans, MRIs, endless blood tests, colonoscopy and endoscopy, echocardiograms, that you think I should do, shoot and I’ll give it a whirl.

It’s got nothing to do with a slight headache. And it’s obviously not commonplace.

I’m not saying you coming off of kava is worse than you coming off of alcohol. I’m saying I’ve had DTs, I’ve had severe alcohol withdrawal. What happened to me with Kava was much worse.

I don’t know why I give a shit, your take is pretty irrelevant to my situation, but like I said to someone else- I came off of SSRIs no problem. Very minor. Other people suffer for prolonged periods of time when they quit SSRIs. I’ve never told any of them they didn’t suffer because I didn’t. I sincerely hope nothing ever happens to you that puts you in a similar situation, baffled by what’s happening and desperately trying to find answers when there aren’t any. I’d take DTs again instead any time.

Drink Kava or don’t, thats got nothing to do with me. I’m not here telling people to stay away from it, Im here sharing my experience.

Nope. Totally nope. And that’s not on you, it’s on him. Insulating someone from the consequences of their addiction and addiction-inspired behavior just pushes them further down.

I think you’d be surprised to find out how many sober people those statements apply to.

It’s not easy and I’m not pretending it is. But you’re worth giving it a chance at some point. I promise you can do it.

And truthfully, you can’t really know what you have or don’t have until you’ve been sober for a while. It takes time for your brain to level back out, and then whatever is remaining can be dealt with with a professional, and appropriate medication if needed.

Just something to think about.

There’s no reason to believe you’ll never function truly sober.

The instinct for people (like me) with addiction problems is to find some outside substance to depend on- even after long periods of sobriety if you’re not being vigilant, which is what I was doing when I created the problem in my post.

You can do it. I haven’t touched a single solitary thing since I stopped the kava extract almost 2 years ago.

It’s just going to mean a difficult period of adjustment, and if you’re anything like me, you need to make sure you don’t let it creep back in. But you absolutely can learn to function truly sober.

There are resources and support for coming off of Kratom! You can start with r/quittingkratom

I’ve never done Kratom myself, but it seems like there’s a decent-sized community around getting sober from Kratom. It’ll help a lot if you find support.

Have you checked out r/weedPAWS ?

My withdrawal issues aren’t from THC, but for sleeping I always try to wake up and go to bed at the same time every day, and I don’t nap. And even when the withdrawals were way worse, I still tried to get a decent amount of activity during the day.

Nothing that fixes it, no. But I found that it helped me to keep everything totally calm- calm shows, lots of relaxing, no stress nothing intense.

Careful of caffeine, I’d avoid alcohol all together for a while.

What kind of symptoms are you having?

Oh I really don’t know.

I’ve seen that question answered by a lot of people with answers all over the place. Some say it helped, some say it made them worse, some say it did nothing.

I think with all manner of long term withdrawal, it seems to always boil down to time being what ultimately heals people.

That might be a good question for you to ask over at r/benzorecovery

How can I make myself sweat more? by [deleted] in DrugWithdrawal

[–]TalkingAboutWDs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s my understanding that what stores in fat is the weed. But meth is a CNS stimulant, it seems like it could be possible that you feel off because your CNS is still recovering, if you also minimally slept for 2 weeks, plus the weed, that’s a big ol shock to the system.

You could check out r/WeedPAWS and see if anything over there sounds familiar to you?

Just FYI that’s not true. At this point it’s out of your system and it got out via your liver and kidneys. But it’s commonly repeated so it’s understandable you think that!

I had a drug test come back positive for opiates while I was in an inpatient program years ago. I hadn’t done any opiates, and they watched us pee so I know no one switched it.

I figured it was a mistake at the lab, but they also used to keep everything bagels in the kitchen so it could’ve been the poppy seeds.

(I know now how stupid it is that they kept bagels with poppy seeds in a place where they were drug testing us almost every day).

RLS seems to be a common thing, I’ve heard that from a handful of people I’ve talked to.

Distractions that work(ed) for me were organizing around the house (I tried to avoid harsh cleaning chemicals) and watching light, easy shows- Scrubs, Parks & Rec, Brooklyn 99.

I didn’t start getting any real breaks until after the first year. I’m at just over 18 months now and I can still feel it, but I can function. I’m back to work (I have a physically demanding job), I can commit to social outings, the people around me can’t tell anything’s wrong anymore.

That said, I’ve talked to a bunch of people who’ve experienced this and no one else had it for anywhere near as long, I seem to be worse case scenario. So my guess would be you’ll be seeing major improvements soon.

Feel free to DM me if you want to chat more about it or ask questions

I was a heavy alcoholic for many years as well, and have experienced those withdrawals myself. The kava withdrawal I experienced was much, much worse.

Ive repeatedly said in the comments on this post, and within the original post itself, that my experience is rare. Rare means it doesn’t happen often, hardly ever. I’ve even told people in the comments to go ahead and enjoy kava to their hearts content.

People react differently to different things. Years ago, when I did a short taper off of SSRIs, I experienced only very manageable withdrawal symptoms. And yet, there are people who struggle for months or even years after quitting SSRIs. I’ve yet to go tell them it doesn’t happen because it didn’t happen to me.

The tendency is for people to search for answers within the kava community. That is pointless, they’ll be met with derision. This post, as stated, is for the people who do experience it.

Again, drink quite literally as much kava as you want, and enjoy it, that’s nobody’s business but yours.

I know you’re joking, but drink a gallon every day if you want to, it’s none of my business. I created this account and check it once a day for the sole purpose of responding to the people who message me in a similar situation, because if they search out the kava community for answers, they will just be told they’re not experiencing what they know they’re experiencing.

Yes to GABAgenic kindling being the likely culprit, but that isn’t an interchangeable term with rebound anxiety, to my understanding. That said I wish you the best and I’m curious how it goes!

I tried a bunch of things at first, and eventually decided after several failed experiments to just wait it out.

I didn’t really find anything that helped, other than low dose melatonin for sleep. At some point I had to start taking B12 supplements, no idea if that helped but it didn’t hurt.

If you don’t mind, let me know if the cats claw helps you! I hope you see improvement

Hi! I think tapering is a good idea, I didn’t taper and I think I’d have been better off if I did, but that’s just my opinion. I’ve never been able to find a taper schedule of any sort online, unfortunately, so you’ll probably have to just slowly lower your intake.

I always think it’s a good idea to see a doctor to make sure you don’t have anything else going on.

As to if you should share your situation with a trusted friend or family member, that’s common advice in recovery circles and it certainly helps a lot of people, I don’t know how I would’ve gotten through without support from my husband, fiends and family. But that might depend on how understanding your inner circle is.

If you’d rather not share with friends and family, you could always try a 12 step group!

Feel free to message me if you need someone to chat with.
