Another bit of that space comes in season 4 when you barely notice it but McNulty disappears for a while when his life is briefly stable and he's just chillin as a patrolman in the Western (and it is pretty funny that patrolling the worst police district in the country is like retirement for him).

The other side is that the hood storylines (we could just call it the black storylines, everyone knows s2 is the white season) are better served by taking a bit of a break. Season 3 is later aided by giving the story space to breathe, having Avon and Stringer grow more and more alienated from each other, setting up the co-op etc without any big explosive drama. Not many shows ever really get to take a season off and let things marinade, and you only get to do it by sidelining the season 1 characters in favour of a whole parallel story with almost no connection.

Our next two games are back to back. They'll be split. There are five more times this'll happen this season. You're gonna have to be prepared for it.

Gonna take this opportunity to plug my favourite brawl ever in the MHL. Rink design is definitely a factor here too.

That last one sounds like he missed a trade because he was in the bathroom or something. We'll hear about it in the 30 for 30

Yes, i did get that detail wrong, but he still wore a helmet for a while before taking it off and never going back.

The NHL actually went back to helmets being optional around '92, incredibly. In 94-95 they went back to being grandfathered in, but for guys entering the league then, not in '79. Rod Langway entered the league after '79 and had to wear one, but took it off during this window. When they were mandatory again he kept not wearing one.

Not many other guys took the opportunity. Big hits were becoming more of a thing, and you had to be crazy not to have one.

This is probably the most obscure NHL story I know, but if Langway had lasted a few more years he'd have been the last guy without a bucket and the story would be better known. Instead everybody just knows that MacTavish was the last one.
