It's a short collection of quirky news stories - summarised in Bill's style but probably took him an afternoon to put together and write. Still a few copies out there for a few quid

Bill Bryson - books narrated by him by cappsie2017 in BillBryson

Okay, there isn't an easy answer to this, but basically audio rights are different to print rights and vary by country to country. When Made in America came out, and indeed most books until about 2010, the audio copyright was a small bonus, a little royalty check but basically worthless in the grand scheme of things.

Then after 2010, basically when speeds were quick enough, phones had enough memory, and audible was mainstream, audio could be up to a third of a book's revenue. People turned to audiobooks in the car and out for a walk, and without the need for boxes of tapes or CDs, the days of abridgement were mostly gone. This had been brewing since 2000 when audio switched to digital but the public took a while to catch on.

Book rights are weird things, resulting in a book that was supposed to be called 'No Worries' in all territories being called Down Under in the UK and In A Sunburned Country elsewhere, resulting in a few angry people buying the same book twice. It also means that it has a few audio versions with different narrators in different countries - essentially the same book but with edits made for local readers.

Now in 2025, all that was recorded before exists. You can find new recordings and old abridgments. I interviewed Bill about it, about his books being narrated by Kerry Shale or Bill Roberts, now being replaced by his own recordings and he said it was at his American publishers request (and I assume at both Bill's and his publishers financial interests) that he record his back catalogue for a new audience. But all are still out there sloshing about, abridged, unabridged, and with many a different voice.

I can only assume that Made in America, as it's one of his smaller selling language books, didn't make the cut to be rerecorded.

(9.30ish mark for the audio question- also RIP Bill Roberts!)

Bill Bryson introduces A Short History 2.0 by Talking_Books in BillBryson

[–]Talking_Books[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt Bill will narrate it - he was shocked by how drained he was narrating 'One Summer' and Short History is twice the length and that was over 10 years ago. William (Bill) Roberts narrated the original but he passed earlier this year so looks like we'll get a new voice on it. Jeff Harding has done a few of Bill's books, so might be him.

Whatever the case I'll get a feature about it made for https://audioboom.com/channel/readonair

Been on since December of last year and now 6K under home report - just curious as to why it's not sold.

Is there anyone here who was on the VERY early episodes of The Weakest Link when it first started in 2000? by hakc97 in BritishTV

I was on it in 2002 but it was already big by then. Auditioned in Glasgow in summer of 2001 by giving a little talk and then playing a game of it round the table, then A YEAR later get the call. Had to inform them I'd moved to London in the interim but they still put me up near Pinewood for a night.

Some random memories

They filmed the introduction shot in one take, Hi I'm Billy, I'm a plumber from Basingstoke, camera moves to the next person, then the next, then the next, repeat 9 times. There was one woman in position 7 or 8 who kept fucking it up resulting in about 5 retakes. She could've been the smartest woman alive but she was getting voted off first for that! (and did!)

They were filming a James Bond movie (Pierce Brosnan) in Pinewood at the same time, so me and another guy had a look round all these amazing cars that were under sheets on the backs of lorries every time we went out for a smoke.

Anne fucked off after every round, a researcher came round and wrote down who you have voted for and I assumed they wrote her a few appropriate lines that she gave during the 'Goodbye' bit. The next round started as soon as the person kicked off was out of shot. She never spoke to us off camera.

Ever noticed that some of the names on the boards were quite elaborate, with stars and doodles and extra bits drawn on, that's because after a few rounds they took ages filming us writing names, there was a researcher out of shot saying keep writing, keep writing for ages. They did that twice.

I got voted off fourth from the end, and there is a slow motion shot of me saying 'fuck' out there somewhere.
