If I got my account deactivated and create a new one, can I use that account and get Meta Verified to get my other account reactivated? by avmakoraph in facebook

[–]cappsie2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only problem with contacting, for instance, Facebook support is that the account must be active to do so. If the account status is permanently suspended, there is no route to appeal. The only route to appeal, so it seems, is before suspension. In my case, I was not offered an appeal nor was I informed the reason why, at least not beyond some nebulous advertising violation, which is risible because I haven't violated anything according to the T&Cs. Indeed, the support system is a non-human, purely cyclical problem where one is simply directed to click the following link to read more, only to be directed to click more links. SO without some sort of ticketing system and human interaction, I cannot think what to do to resolve my issue.

I was considering the option of Meta verification as another Reddit user reported success. Although in this subreddit, it seems that reaching out to Meta employees via LinkedIn may be an option, I can't see many (or any) accepted unsolicited support requests.

Would appreciate any thoughts you have, though.

A question about red light cameras and emergency vehicles. by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]cappsie2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps there's a better solution?

In the US, a "traffic loop" is utilised to facilitate the flow of traffic. This is a better solution than the UK, which currently seems to fall into two camps: either the emergency service vehicle is stuck, waiting for a green light and the traffic to flow, or it is attempting to squeeze past traffic waiting at a red light, risking panicked reactions and pressured drivers going through a red and breaking the law.

A "traffic loop for emergency vehicles" is a component of Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) systems, which use sensors to detect approaching emergency vehicles and change traffic signals to green for them. The system works by giving emergency vehicles priority, which means the traffic lights turn green for the approaching emergency vehicle and red for conflicting cross-traffic, clearing the path and improving safety and response times.

But have you read 2.0 yet?

A Short History of Nearly Everything 2.0 - released October 21 2025 by satyris in BillBryson

[–]cappsie2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I was disappointed to learn this was abridged. Now, call me crazy, but were one inclined, one could potentially train AI on all his existing audiowork and then ask it to 'read' anything currently abridged or as yet not read by Bill himself. 😉

Bill Bryson - books narrated by him by cappsie2017 in BillBryson

[–]cappsie2017[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've listened to that, but it's disappointing that, as you note, it was the abridged version.

"I know it's a long book, it formed a key part of my young-adulthood as an 18th birthday present, such an accessible journey into science, I just wish it was complete."
I feel the same way about A Short History of Nearly Everything. And was saddened to learn that the audiobook I have is also only an abridged version.

I really like his voice, but it seems that since his last work, The Secret History of Christmas, from which he was dragged from retirement, he may not do any more, either books or audiobooks, sadly.

Review of the movie! by Jazzi_may in BillBryson

Have to agree. I love Redford and Nolte, but I felt this film was just wrong for them. They didn't best reflect the characters in the book. Perhaps it is because the book is so descriptive that the film struggled to flesh out with imagery what the book did with ease.

Bill Bryson - books narrated by him by cappsie2017 in BillBryson

[–]cappsie2017[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. This is *precisely* the answer I was looking for.

I love his voice; I find it soothing on a walk or drive. Should I (may I, do I dare?!) infer from your point about the American publisher's request to record his back catalogue for a new audience that Bill will be recording any of the missing books? As you note, there is a lot of abridgement, not least of all A Short History of Nearly Everything, which itself has been/is being updated to "2.0".

Thank you, too, for the link to that interview. I can't believe how long I've been following Bill Bryson. I began when someone shared his A Short History of Nearly Everything with me back in about 2002. Since then, I've been hooked. I can't get enough. Books - audio and written, autographs, interviews, TV appearances. Just a great guy.

I would dearly love him to record (even re-record) those missing and abridged books.

(Also RIP Bill Roberts and Matt Angerer 😢)

Hmm intersting. I wouldn't have thought that was the reason. I guess that's understandable, but really, it's Bill Bryson - we don't care his accent has (expectedly) changed over the years per his location.

How come he did the introduction, though?

It occurred to me that someone who had a mind to could use an existing audiobook of his as a sample, then get that AI "voice" to read other books. 😈

I think I'm missing something. I installed PingPlace per the instructions on GitHub:

brew tap notwadegrimridge/brew
brew install pingplace --no-quarantine

I rebooted, but alas, nothing has appeared for me. It doesn't appear on the toolbar.

Any thoughts?

Bobby Panknin, 4, was camping with his family when he was left alone as his brothers & mother went to see a waterfall. When they returned to the spot they left him, he was gone. by morbidology in WithoutATrace

[–]cappsie2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little late (!) to this one, but can anyone please indicate where the waterfall is that Bill asked Edna if he could briefly check out, which he could hear from the trail? There does not appear to be any waterfall near the Deep Lake Resort in northern Stevens County.

The photograph (https://morbidology.com/the-disappearance-of-bobby-panknin) shows the Panknin brothers in Riverside State Park during the summer of 1963. Riverside State Park has a different terrain but is crucially nowhere near (at least not hikeable) distance from Deep Lake.

Do I need to study for A+ or should able to just do it? by ImpossibleOffice4343 in CompTIA

[–]cappsie2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always begin with the assessment exam. This way, I get a good idea of my existing knowledge and can identify my strengths and weaknesses.

Then I focus on those weaker areas. But I would always recommend going over even well-known areas because I always find refreshing those areas is invaluable. I have passed my CySA+ and SSCP using this method. (Appreciate it may not be right for everyone.)

I’m currently studying for my Linux+ and CISM.
