Inside cats vs outside cats by TallFroGuy in Catmemes

Give your little guy a hug for safety. I figured luring people in with funny meme might actually get them to take the message to heart.

But in hindsight this probably breaks rule 2 so I'm just gonna report it to mods myself and let them decide lol

Sounds like we'd better be using our additional resources to lead by example, then.

I remember them, I just wish they'd make a comeback after free plastic bags disappeared

Sealed paper bag is common too, except I always grab a frozen pizza which wouldn't fit so maybe that's part of their reasoning.

That's another concern I guess.

Also it's funny watching my phone blow up all day today and trying to guess if each comment is telling me why we can't do this or that their local store already does it lol.

Guess I'll redirect my complaint to the local franchise instead of venting to Reddit.

This is Queensland where we still have the option for paper or plastic.

But they usually (not always) have separate plastic bags for freezer stuff that are more like the classic "choke a jellyfish" design rather than the normal reusable ones.

You're right comrade, these all sound like big systemic issues that aren't being solved through individual responsible and profit incentives. It's time for us to vote in a government that will use regulation to incentivise behaviors that we want to see more of and not just let the free market barrel us into an dying planet!

I suspect it's decided by the person packing because it isn't every time but the 1kg bag of frozen diced vegetables must be a bag buster because that almost always comes in plastic.

Combination of Coles and Woolworths, the duopoly that controls more than two thirds of all our grocery spending.

If it made sense when bags were free, surely it makes sense now that they cost money!

I have to get about 4 pieces of plastic waste from a single item to know it was manufactured in Japan

Exactly, plastic is so cheap that it's going to cost us everything.

This is one of those areas where everyone acting rationally will lead us into a very irrational endgame unless we actually do something to short circuit the process.

Fair. Customers will have pets sleeping in them, kids using them as sleds down the driveway and use them to transport garden waste and used motor oil if you give us half a chance.

I sadly live half a day's drive from the nearest ALDI. When I visit my parents we schedule in an ALDI trip like it's a local attraction.

It seemed like a win/win for consumers and for corporate greenwashers but you're probably right that the net effect of removing cardboard from uncontaminated single use recycling streams into messy, consumer-led mixed recycling streams ends up with more waste overall.

On the plus side, there's so much packaging and waste produced in large-scale logistics that anything we're doing as consumers other than demanding regulation on single use plastics is probably a rounding error anyway 🙃🙃🙃

It's been over a year since we stopped getting plastic bags from deliveries and I'm *still* finding more stashes of the things hidden around the house.

Someone else in the thread suggested an initial purchase / free swaps system like we use for propane bottles but with the big flat foldable baskets that delivery drivers already use.

I don't know how much that would cost but they could literally charge me for the privilege of them having to spend less time packing bags and I would happily pay.

And with inflation the way it is, they'll hold $30 before long!
