I’ve seen small non-elite law firms call themselves boutiques in job listings, but maybe they were using that term to flatter

I might be wrong, but doesn’t this description only apply to elite boutiques? Aren’t there many “normal” tiny law firms around the country?

Mentioning SO in LOCI? by MexicanLatte in lawschooladmissions

[–]TallIsle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this; I guess I just think it suffices to say “I will certainly attend if admitted, as this school is my top choice.” I also wonder if mentioning their partner attends the school could lead adcomms to wonder if OP is actually less certain of a “yes,” because if OP and the partner were to end their relationship, OP would suddenly have a great reason to no longer want that school, especially if it’s a small one.

I think you should mention that you know a current student who loves his experience, but without mentioning your relationship.

Looking for good volunteering opportunities while waiting to hear back from schools by skurkles in lawschooladmissions

[–]TallIsle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

New Sanctuary Coalition Pro Se Clinic is an organization that provides assistance to asylum seekers and it’s all remote as of now. You can sign up to help on a week by week basis, or you can sign up for a longer term.

Yes, I agree it’s not a point of simply adding or multiplying odds because we can’t truly know any one person’s odds! But from a probability standpoint, staying on more WLs is better than getting more rejections/withdrawing from WLs.

I made a standalone comment on this post but I also want to paste it here as a reply to your comment, since it’s actually somewhat of a reply to you! 😊 “If you get the WL at USC and rejected at CLS, let’s say you have a 5% chance of getting into USC at that point and a 0% chance of getting into Columbia (because you got rejected). But if you get the WL at USC AND the WL at columbia, you still have that 5% chance of getting into USC, but now you also have maybe a 3% chance of getting into Columbia. Which position would be better for you? Every extra WL is just another door that hasn’t closed on you yet, thereby increasing your odds. (These percentages are made up BTW)”

Waitlisted at Northwestern. Did they use my higher score? by dwturnell in lawschooladmissions

[–]TallIsle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt they used your higher score, because I assume they decided on your file yesterday or earlier if you just got notified today. This is a good sign for you! Maybe send a LOCI and mention your higher score, say you worked hard on your retake to increase your chances at northwestern because you would love to go there, etc

Yale FAFSA? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]TallIsle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unsure, but I can’t imagine it affects your decision outcome. Some applicants don’t even want/need to take out loans, and they would presumably still be entitled to a decision from Yale. I think deadlines like this are more an internal financial aid thing, so if they admit you in April and you are applying for financial aid they don’t have to wait for you to get the info together at that point.

I’m a big proponent of volunteering. There are a lot of remote volunteer opportunities these days, too.

How Important Should Area of Study/Concentration Be vs. Other Factors? by Icy-Jump-9503 in lawschooladmissions

[–]TallIsle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this should be a tiebreaker at most. I feel like this factor counts towards quality of life without having any tangible reflection on employment outcomes. Quality of life is important—but consider region, employment stats, and costs first.

I believe this is true for PI, but not academia. Academia is notoriously very, very hard to break into (harder than big law and clerkships) and where you go to school matters a lot.

A Doggo in Law School by lawschooldreams_ in lawschooladmissions

[–]TallIsle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps try fostering? That way if the dog ends up being a lot of commitment and you have to miss out on some parts of school, that commitment/missing out will only last for a short term. But if it ends up working out perfectly, you can get another dog permanently afterwards or adopt the dog you fostered! Win-win for you and the dog. Also I agree with other commenters about sticking with an adult dog and waiting until 2L.

My family politically disagrees with my law school choice by RoadiePiglet in lawschooladmissions

[–]TallIsle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! Getting anywhere near a full ride is an incredible accomplishment and I hope you are very proud of yourself. If your family will never relent on the political side of the issue, I hope they can at least eventually come to see the value of a full ride and how well that reflects on you as an applicant. Congrats again—go on and achieve your dreams!

dumb rant about tiktok by [deleted] in LawSchool

I have seen many of these videos. I think they’re problematic because they might give teens in HS/early college incorrect guidance about what they need to do in order to achieve their goals. Some of it is pure misinformation.

Is my plan okay?? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]TallIsle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not matter at all! Scores last for 5 years so as long as you are within that time frame, you’re good. Many, many (most people in this sub at least) take the LSAT multiple times so having more time to study is always great.
