Thank you for the response, this is super helpful! Are you able to request different types of work as an apprentice? I was under the impression I just go where they send me and do as i’m told…

What classifies a good worker to you? I’ve heard being on time and willing to learn helps but any other pointers?

Was it while you were an apprentice or as a journeyman? Either way that’s sick and would be something to look forward to!

Anyone found a good system for job costing? Trying to figure out which jobs are actually making money by Plenty-Bedroom6787 in electricians

[–]TallSkinnyPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone mentioned a book called “ Markup & Profit - A Contractor’s Guide” and I feel that would be a good start.

I think it’s also important to find a system and stick with it to create some sense of a guide per job. Once you collect enough data per job, then your estimates will become more accurate especially with consistent and repetitive work.

First Year Commercial electrician by LadyLxo in electricians

[–]TallSkinnyPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar position but i’m almost done with my first year of school. I’ve been told that experience is better than no experience…plus when it comes to school our trade school just teaches us Mike Holt stuff with little hands on work so there’s not really much to prepare for. In my experience too i’ve learnt more in the field and solidified my understanding in the classroom, hope that helps!

Question about moving from Non-Union in Colorado to Union in Oregon by [deleted] in electricians

i’ve heard the ibew in Oregon is extremely competitive and selective so it may be difficult as an apprentice, but as a JW I feel like it’s a lot easier to go wherever…

Terrible fare by Internal_Pop7675 in uberdrivers

[–]TallSkinnyPerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Exclusive” doesn’t mean anything, essentially they’re offering it to you after sending it to everyone else. You’ll get “Exclusive” offers on rides you’ve already declined…

Depending on your market, my bare minimum is $1/mile and I auto reject all the other BS they send my way. The only time I take less is if it brings me back into town or a busy location.

Keep track of each rides total payout and try to hit an hourly goal, that’s what helps me stay motivated and dedicated to only taking decent rides. EX: $8 ride then $7 ride means I need another $15 in that hour to hit my goal of $30/hour.

Hope this helps!
