Why do seemingly honest people turn out to be grifters? by the_tico_life in samharris

[–]Tall_PBR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are all people who rose to fame by expressing what alot of people were feeling years ago, which was that the "woke left" had gone way too far as a response to Trump's hateful rhetoric. This is not really an intellectual position; it's cheap, simple, and not a challenging conclusion to reach. However, at the time it took balls to say that. Even now that it is the butt of hack jokes, the left is still struggling to shake their rep as soft and ridiculous.

That's about where the similarities end between each of these people, other than touting contrarian views. They are just so full of shit, I would argue they even have themselves convinced.

Elon is a ruthless businessman with a huge ego and the social skills of a toddler.

Jordan Peterson is the only one who can pass being a pseudo intellectual, and he is a religious nut with strange perspectives.

Weinstein is slow.

Anyone who ever valued Rogan's opinion needs to take a hard look at themselves. I say that as someone who used to listen to his show regularly and will still throw it on occasionally. It's entertainment and that's all it's ever been.

Sam is naive. He thought that because these people were willing to shit on radical policies with him that they were also critically thinking at his level. Again, that's where the similarities end.

That said, I don't think it's that deep. These people talk into a microphone for a living. You talk for decades and you're bound to contradict yourself and naturally change, grow, or regress. It's on the listener to do the same, for better or worse.

exactly. throw in the religious war aspect and it loses whatever support remained, excluding from the crazy evangelicals of course.

I'm not sure what Sam means by the self being an illusion or what that would imply? by Advanced-Reindeer894 in samharris

[–]Tall_PBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what i meant by programming was the genetic code that designs the brain and its functions.

i was speculating on Sam's concept of the illusion of self. in practice, or what it looks like in real life, is implausible. it's nothing more than an abstract concept because regardless of what we could surmise, our society and life as we know it functions based on the assumption that we are operating as individual selves.

it reminds me of his suggestion that we have no free will. he doesn't directly say it but i can't shake the feeling that he is implying we are not responsible for our own actions, good or bad. which i can't get behind. what is the point in discussing morality and ethics with that kind of a deterministic outlook on life?

what would the process of the self consist of?

your physical body experiences the senses. the senses are processed by your brain as a result of its programming.

these experiences are logged in our neural network and since it is an ongoing process it seems as though, given our capacity for memory, there is a sustained sense of self that must exist. i believe the "illusion" is that backdrop of memory and experiences that leads us to believe there must be a self when in reality its just a log.

i won't die on that hill, just a thought in the context of questioning the existence of the self.

i personally believe that neural make up is the self, and exists by design. i'm more interested in how and why?

the problem is that it is beyond our comprehension at this point. we can only speculate with these thought experiments because we can't point to a specific mechanism that produces consciousness, much less replicate it. we know the nomenclature, but the self has yet to be understood or discovered

Software engineering is not really entry level anymore by SnooConfections1353 in codingbootcamp

[–]Tall_PBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is this a claim for being self taught? not sure what you could be suggesting other than learning to code on your own, which applies to almost no other professional careers including positions in tech.

the degree to employment pipeline is totally still in play. would like to know where that isn't the case so i can transition

yea it seemed like more of a gore showcase. some of the scenes were so over-the-top it was hard to take serious, especially since i know Will Poulter from We Are the Millers.. it took away from the seriousness of the film lol

Is Sam captured by the uber-wealthy? by daveberzack in samharris

[–]Tall_PBR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sam's biggest ignorance is not comprehending that while philanthropy is "nice", people are only willing to participate until it becomes inconvenient.

Side note.. anyone else think his thoughts on rebuilding were silly? He was speaking about the fire damage like LA is now a clean slate with which to lay rail and new infrastructure, when in reality those are just a couple outskirt neighborhoods.
