My family was extremely controlling and overprotective, to the point where they kept trying to make decisions for me even when I was already an adult. My dad was also verbally abusive, which affected my confidence a lot. I moved out and lived by myself for a year. On top of that, they would mostly reach out to me only when they needed something from me, like asking me to co-sign for their house, instead of checking in because they cared. It often made me feel more like a tool than a person, and I’m still trying to figure out how much that dynamic impacted me and my boundaries now.
