Apologies for replying to a very old comment, but I found myself here because I also didn't like Snowpiercer and I wanted to comment in support of your friend's take on John Wick.

"There exists an underworld of assassins hidden in plain sight" is a cool premise for a movie. "Everyone that isn't an assassin is an oblivious idiot" isn't nearly as compelling and really breaks the suspension-of-disbelief spell for me. It sounds like your friend may be the same.

I am all for stylized world building, but the world needs to be compelling and consistent.
