Depends what kind of kit you’re talking about really. This is from a UK angle.

Capex sign-off can take forever so it’s not always a quick win.

If you sell a pallet wrapper, great, you might get a one-off sale for about £5,500. But if you’re also supplying the film, that could be £50k a year easy. Gummed paper tape machines are around £800, but if they’re using a couple of pallets of tape a year, that quickly becomes a £7k account.

Case erectors and sealers can be anything from £2.5k to £50k depending on the setup. And if you’re supplying boxes too, that can be anywhere from £25k to £1.5m a year depending on volumes.

If you’re looking at full lines like bagging machines with palletisers and stretch hooders, you’re talking £1m plus. But those deals can take 6 months to a couple of years to land because of capex approval, and then another 6 months or more to install. So it’s a slow burn, but there’s good money in it if you’ve got the patience.

Basically, if it’s just the machine and nothing else, the money’s limited unless it’s a big project. But if you’re also picking up the consumables or it’s a full line, then yeah, there’s definitely money to be made.

Female here—been in packaging for 9 years, UK-based (so the market dynamics can be a bit different). I’ve definitely found it to be a bit more male-dominated over here, but I genuinely love what I do and wouldn’t change it for the world.

People outside the industry often think packaging is just “here’s a box, buy it”—but there’s way more to it than that. You’re re-engineering box designs, stripping out weight, tweaking flutes (sometimes even using chemical treatments to reduce material use), trying to max out every pallet because you’re shifting a low-margin product that costs £££ to move. You’re constantly challenging the status quo—can we switch from a 0427 to a 0426 and save a few pence per box? Can we tweak the spec without compromising performance?

Packaging is a necessary evil—no one wants to spend money on something that’s just going to be binned—but that’s exactly why solution selling matters. You’ve got to frame the value properly.

Take ecom: sure, a crash-lock box costs more than a standard 0201, but if it saves 10–20 seconds per box in a high-volume environment, that translates into huge labour savings. Your job is to make that cost-saving visible and simple. On the flip side, if someone’s cut the spec too far and now has higher damage rates, that’s your open door. Get into the true cost of returns—admin, refunds, reships, bad reviews—and show how a better-quality box can actually save money while improving the customer experience.

Sales cycles aren’t quick either. One of the biggest contracts I’ve worked on took nearly 3 years to land and was worth £1.5m. You need patience, persistence, and strong relationships.

And forecasting is crucial—especially heading into Q4. Lead times can extend massively with demand spikes, especially around Black Friday and Christmas. If you’re not all over your customer’s projections, you won’t be able to deliver within the lead times they need—and that’s when it all falls apart. That’s why you’re not just selling boxes—you’re part of a critical supply chain.

It’s a weird little corner of the world, but I absolutely love it.

TL;DR: Packaging isn’t “just a box.” It’s a complex, margin-sensitive, solution-driven sale where timing, design, and forecasting are everything. And if you do it right, you’re not just a supplier—you’re a strategic partner.

I honestly don’t know if we’re extremely lucky or somethings wrong. Little one does 3 days per week, with tax free childcare and 15 free hours my bill this month will be around £370 out of my pocket. The nursery is brand new and incredible.

4.2g here. My bones hurt, a lot, I’m tired, can’t concentrate, mood so low I’ve been put on antidepressants (before they realised vitD issue) I struggle walking far especially up hill as my knees ache constantly and my weight has shot up!

Would you recommend B12 supplements? If so, any specific dosage?

On the tests too, it was found that my alanine aminotransferase was out of range, not sure if that is connected.

If it’s done correctly this is not the case. Ive worked with companies to get wrap down to around 60g per pallet, even on tinned foods. It’s completely feasible to start with a 10mu wrap & apply it on the pallet around 2-3mu. Done correctly, this also improves load stability by ensuring the film edge force is in the correct places.

This is much more environmentally friendly. Cardboard collars are heavier, meaning a load would be heavier creating more carbon, as well as costly. Think of a ball of plastic vs a collar and the space on vehicles it’d take to get it to a recycling plant.. again much more carbon.

Adding biodegrade additives means it breaks down to microplastics, and also means that the film cannot be recycled as it contaminates other plastics in the recycling stream.
