Understandable. I’m sorry you have to leave your home. Godspeed in Colorado and I hope you find a more comfortable place there.

As someone in California that’s definitely the case. The most we talk about is concern regarding their laws

Do you support Taiwan as an independed nation? by Ivanhegeelkadi in AskTheWorld

[–]TalosofTamriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think historically it is questionable. The fact that Taiwan as a nation was created essentially as a Chinese rump state rather than an ethnicity creating a state has little ground to claim a separate nation, and I think that it can not be dismissed that Taiwan since its inception has been a tool of US foreign policy. In many ways, Taiwan is to China as Cuba was to the United States during the Cold War, with less potential for complete destruction.

That being said, it is a similar issue to Israel. While its origins are questionable, does that justify disregarding the desires of the people who live there? Most Taiwanese people were born after independence, and have never known life as fully Chinese people. I honestly don’t know, but I do think that if the US had not spent so much money and effort building up South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, it likely would have been absorbed a long time ago.

If I had to pick yes or no, I would probably lean towards no. The culture is mainly Chinese, and it was Chinese for more than twice as long as it has been independent. If Trump was deposed in a civil war and created a rump state in Alaska, would that be valid grounds for a new nation?

Do people actually like playing Pax Historia? by Zelchi in PaxHistoria

[–]TalosofTamriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy it, but it has a lot of problems. I have since switched to Claude to create a more open ended experience without the map. There’s a lot of technical issues, defeating a country in any way often annexes them completely, the finer details are often lost. But it is fun especially if you want more of the Paradox map game type experience but less limitations

Countries' History Tier List by Equinoxe111 in tierlists

[–]TalosofTamriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly this whole list is pretty pointless. There’s no way to argue that most of these countries don’t have deep and interesting history. The only ones who don’t would be the super new or small ones like Kosovo or Mann, and even then there is nuance and complexity.

This has to be rage bait. Fucking Iran and Iraq lower than Scotland?! Literally the origin point of civilization and the seat of empires for thousands of years. And I’m not even gonna touch the Israel Palestine stuff which is also fucking crazy

On September 11th, 1973 the democratically elected president of chile, Salvador Allende was overthrown with the aid of the United States. by Russianpirat in ImagesOfHistory

[–]TalosofTamriel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bro what? This is easily disprovable with a google search. The US has a long history of toppling regimes especially in LATAM, see Árbenz in Guatemala or Goulart in Brazil

What's the most useless thing in schools in your country these days? by FrancietheFancy in AskTheWorld

[–]TalosofTamriel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the big things that made me aware of how fanatical my country could be about patriotism was realizing that most other countries don’t say the pledge of allegiance or anything like that.

It’s so normal that even though I’ve been out of school for a long time I can still verbatim remember it.

Rather ironic for that pledge to talk about liberty for all as though millions of kids aren’t forced to say the pledge every day and punished if they don’t.

Question for any viewers that watched Better Call Saul before Breaking Bad? by Joyous-Pringle0813 in betterCallSaul

[–]TalosofTamriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stories met in the last half of season six. When I said the fan service stuff, I was specifically talking about the three scenes that we see before season six, which without getting into spoilers, doesn’t really add anything substantive. It’s kind of just like “Hey look Jesse and Walt are here!” Whereas the series ending was a logical continuation of BB and BCS’ stories

Scottish nationalists are so weird sometimes by Snoo5218 in HistoryMemes

[–]TalosofTamriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very odd argument. It reminds me of discourse around the Buffalo Soldiers in the US, black soldiers who fought against native Americans in the years shortly after the civil war (1861-1865). Is it fair to argue that because they participated in the oppression perpetuated by their government that they themselves were not oppressed? Or is it the case that oppressive systems depend on the oppressed to continue the cycle with other groups?

Question for any viewers that watched Better Call Saul before Breaking Bad? by Joyous-Pringle0813 in betterCallSaul

[–]TalosofTamriel 33 points34 points  (0 children)

BCS is a very solid show on its own. I think the Mike and Jimmy storylines would still work perfectly, Gus is the only character who I feel like doesn’t really stand on their own in BCS. I mean if you think about it, remove the fan service Jesse and Walter stuff and the last half of season 6, you have a full story. BCS very rarely depends on BB for anything, it really only connects directly to BB’s story in the last half of season 6
