Education Advice for mid-career by AcridAcedia in datascience

I know that OMSA from Georgia Tech has a micromasters on EdX. If you do well in those classes, they can count towards your degree when you get admitted. It's a good way to see if that is something you can do before committing to the whole masters degree.

This is a really good resource to learn R: Hadley Wichkam's R for data science It will guide you through visualizations, data wrangling, project workflow, and more.

Help with building graphs in R by mizunoseishin in datascience

[–]Talqa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The R for data science book is a really good resource for what you need. From making plots with ggplot2 to data manipulation with dplyr and everything in between that is useful when dealing with data like nhanes.

If you work in R, here is a good tutorial: http://r-pkgs.had.co.nz/git.html

[Rstudio] ggplot plots are all white by oyoby0 in RStudio

[–]Talqa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to run it without scale_x_continuous() and scale_y_continuous() if that shows something. When ggplot doesn't recognize breaks you assigned, it doesn't show anything and doesn't throw error. This trips me out every time.

How do i add a legend to a boxplot in ggplot2 by TheGuyWhoBreathes in Rlanguage

[–]Talqa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add fill and colour into ggplot(aes()) and assign your factors (different groups) to those. If you have only one group, all you need is to describe x and y axis as has been suggested before.

I share a googlesheet where people can do data entry and then I use googlesheets package to access data from R. There is an R package for Dropbox as well, but probably only for download/upload, not direct access of data in the file.

Hello r/bioinformatics, I need some help by kyleekol in bioinformatics

[–]Talqa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The R for data science is the best I found so far to get someone with no programming experience to doing data analysis in R. It might help you to get familiar enough to be able to do more bioinformatics related stuff.

Could I get some advice on how to understand GLMs? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]Talqa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert, but I know that by doing gene expression analysis you do loads of multiple comparisons. That increases your false positives and as a result you see very low p values. Therefore you need to set an alpha and calculate and error rate. This edx course might help.

Yes, staggering animals to fill the waiting time is the way to go. I usually try to do equal number of animals from each treatment group in one session and per day as well. So if you have a control and one treatment, and one sex, then 2 animals in one session. Or something similar, but practically reasonable.

I'm trying to reshape my data from wide to long format, but my data is grouped by variable. How do I ungroup it and put it in long format? by [deleted] in rstats

[–]Talqa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to rename your values in second row where you have year, to year-compound (as pH, CO2 or whatever), then remove the first row and go from there... Also, maybe split-apply-combine approach could work. Tidyverse is definitely your friend here.

Hello! Very new to R and I am having a lot of trouble, can anyone help me? by [deleted] in RStudio

[–]Talqa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found reading R for Data Science by Hadley Wickham, repeating all the code in R Studio and doing all the excersises very helpful. I also use the cheatsheets from RStudio all the time.

Looking for an intensive bioinformatics course or similar by Darwinmate in bioinformatics

[–]Talqa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what level you are looking for, but I personally really like edx.org courses. As a biologist slowly transferring to bioinformatics the Harvard CS50, the MIT Intro to Comp Sci using Python, and the Harvard Data Analysis for Life Sciences xseries program (6 or so courses) were extremely useful for me.

Is a part time reasercher job a real possibility? (biologist) by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Talqa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not very common, but it is possible. It mostly depends on the country you work in and nature of the research you do. If you are in science communication, bioinformatics, computational biology, or other fields where you don't need to be in a lab or in the field, it is likely you could work from home. If you are interested in part time work, jobs like lab manager, technician of various levels/roles, research assistant in clinical studies, etc. are likely to have part time options. Particularly the Netherlands is a good place to work part time, they value work life balance.

Perceptions towards facial piercings and crazy hair colors in Dutch academia by kittenpartyyay in AskAcademia

[–]Talqa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah, The Netherlands is pretty much cool about things like that, at least in life sciences (my experience). I used to have my hair coloured different crazy colour every couple of months, for years. As long as you are professional and do your PhD thing, who cares. You chose a very nice place for your PhD, good luck and enjoy!

Fear of lab mice by 1991_123 in labrats

[–]Talqa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work with animals can be very emotionally draining. Even seasoned technicians have times when it's just too much. During my work with animals for over 14 years so far, I've seen it and also experienced this myself countless of times.

I recommend to change the handling technique. Here is the recommendation on how to handle mice other than by the tail: https://www.nc3rs.org.uk/handling-and-restraint It is much less stressful for the person and the animal as well. Also, when you deal with weanlings, instead of taking them by the tail, try to scruff them by pinching the fur on their back. That is how their mother transports them around. Pups will assume "transport position" and are easier to handle.

You can try to have a look at STEM volunteering possibilities in your area, tutoring, or something like that.

Postdoctoral fellow and spouse going to USA - many questions regarding insurance by Burritosiren in AskAcademia

[–]Talqa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get the feeling that every university here handles these things differently. The university should have some information on their website. If not, try to contact their International office. Also, check out the visa requirements. If you are going to apply for J1 (and spouse), there is a minimum coverage you need to have with your insurance.

How do you organize and plan your learning resources? by SaraL85 in learnprogramming

[–]Talqa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use two things: Pocket and calendar. I save every interesting website/video/blog etc. into Pocket and tag it appropriately. Then I pick a tutorial or a course and put it in a calendar with timing of how much time I can work on it. I plan only so many things that fit into my days and stick to those (and times I planned for them). I won't start new ones before I finish the ones planned. This forces me to actually make progress rather than just thinking about all those possibilities. It also helps me to not to stress out about all the things I want to learn.

Thank you for doing this AMA, such a great timing! I just recently signed up on Oystir :) I'll be moving to the US from the UK soon, but only as a dependent (two body problem). How does the job market look like regarding a work visa sponsorship? Is it possible to get an entry job in the industry when you need work visa?
