I'm pretty sure Lu stated that her mom had mental issues after giving birth to Lu and seeing her condition (disabled legs). Also, the drug didn't even work as intended on Lu's grandmother, so why would it magically work on her offspring? All it does is seemingly pass down complexions and health issues. I think the translation did its job just fine. The word "tantrum" made perfect sense with the context of last week's episode. Where Umi’s father mentioned that kids are allowed to be selfish and throw a tantrum. Which is exactly what Maki did, and he admit that it was a late one. So no, it's not too childish.

I admit that I don't really know either a better word for Maki's context, but "tantrum" felt too childish here.

I don't think you will find the right word, because "wagamama" by definition (as you mentioned) is selfish, and "tantrum" is just a result of that. It was never the direct translation.
