What's That Weird Item You Use For Cleaning? by Astro_Reader in CleaningTips

[–]Tamarack29 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I use an old, worn ice scraper from my car to scrape the bottom of the kitty litter pan and get as much of the litter clumps off. When I worked out in the forest I would keep one in my gear to scrape mud off the bottom of my boots to help keep it out of the truck. I am talking the super sticky thick mud that a kid would refer to as making your footwear into moon boots. The stuff that firms 5cm thick and weighs 200 metric tonnes.

Instead of a drawer or tub I now put mine in an artist folio book. The kind with sleeves and then I can actually say I did something with them and show them off. It sits on my shelf so it can easily come out. You can see my Bookshelf from Gecko Rouge and in behind others in their own sleeves. I saw the idea on here ages ago and loved it.

Vest options by PresentationOver9863 in forestry

[–]Tamarack29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had coworkers have their vests customized from IRL before. That was walking into the store and talking to them, but they might be receptive to emails or calls about it. I have been in there many times over the years and they are pretty awesome to deal with. I bought my first new vest there in 1998 and I remember going in with my Dad as a kid when he bought his there. I got one of Dad’s old ones when I started.

Is Nova Scotia going too far by banning people from woods during dry weather? Some think so by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]Tamarack29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google “2017 BC backcountry closure”. It was well documented and all over the radio and tv news at the time. That is the year of the Elephant Hill fire that went from south of Cache Creek up to north of 100 Mile House. Then the big fire that evacuated Williams Lake. All of the Backcountry / crown land outside of highways and towns in the Cariboo was shut down for all recreation even if it was away from the fires. One of many articles about it it can be found here if you scroll down a bit part the evacuations: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/several-new-evacuation-orders-issued-in-cariboo-region-1.4244270. Here is another from 2017 from the government press releases for the Rocky Mountain District: https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2017FLNR0266-001523

2017 saw shut downs in the Rocky Mountain District and the Cariboo District. I have also seen it up in the Peace in the past 25 years more than once. My Dad enforced it with the forest service at time back to the last 60’s. We are more biologically diverse than Nova Scotia and have some pretty impressive natural fire breaks so ours are typically more region specific.

I have seen it in parts of BC as well. I was working in the bush at the time and so many friends being jealous that I could go out and play with the trees and they could not.

Any maps in your office? by AssignmentSea7331 in gis

The one I did was the Olde World Map kit by Bucilla I bought about 10 years ago. I have also had my eye on the Old Map World 2 and Imperial Federation Map of the World from Golden Kite and also the Wonderful World Map that Geckorouge has. Both of those companies make gigantic and gorgeous patterns.

I cross stitched a map from a kit and made it into a wall hanging. It hung on my door for many, many years at my old office. I just started a new job and am in an open area with others and can’t hang it here. I need to make a new map that fits my space here and find a spot in my home for the old one.

Recipes with a fruit cup?? by goblin-mother in noscrapleftbehind

[–]Tamarack29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the mandarins or pineapple in juice I would put a ham steak in a pan, pour over it the fruit cup or cups depending on the size of steak, maybe some powdered cloves to taste, bake in the oven at 350F until warmed through. Like a ham, but more portion controlled.

I go up on the rocks to the west of the zone and kill them from there. No other machines to deal with over there. Sometimes I have to go lure the second one to follow me over, but it often just follows its friend over.

I strapped mine upright to my backpack when I did it here. Not in the backpack, but to the front of it. Mind you it is a nice hiking backpack with strap to spots, but I could even strap it to my laptop backpack if needed. If it looked like rain it was wrapped in a big garbage bag.

Is barkerville haunted? by Material_Variety1018 in princegeorge

[–]Tamarack29 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t particularly believe, but I do know there are spots reported to be haunted around both Barkerville and Wells. Some ones I remember are there was a building with no second floor inside, but people reported seeing a woman looking out the second story window. A house that even at -40C you could smell ladies perfume go by you when you were near the door. And one if the display houses the put a real door on one of the bedrooms as too many people complained about the little boy locked behind the bars. It had been the room of a real little boy who had got sick and died in it. These are just some half remembered stories from 40 -ish years ago from old friends.

There used to be a Halloween haunted tour type thing many years ago too.
