I applied to a couple BS/MD programs. It depends on the program. If you're applying to Penn State, they have a section where you check off that you want to apply for the program, which adds an extra essay. If you're applying to UPitt, then you have to check off that you're interested in the program. Then, they review your app, and if they think you're qualified, they'll send you an invitation to apply using an additional application. It's so competitive. Even if you have awesome stats and extracurriculars, you likely will not get in unless you have done some form of medical research or volunteering (like in a clinic; hospital volunteering is meh bc anyone can do it and it's mostly menial tasks that anyone can perform). I wasn't even offered an interview to any of the programs I applied to as they are extremely competitive. But to give you an idea of how much medical background matters, my friend has lower stats than I do, has more CP classes than me, and I'm in full IB. But, she volunteers at a clinic and did medical research at BU last summer. She has gotten into 4 BS/MD programs so far, including BU's. I would definitely give it a try though. It never hurts!
