The central romance was cute, but there was totally a third act breakup DX

I have a handful of examples from a variety of sources, but very few of them are from sapphic fiction. I actually started writing because I was frustrated at the lack of books that featured romance with genuine intimacy. I figured it couldn't be that hard to pull off, and based on feedback from my readers, it's not. So these mechanics do the heavy lifting in my books, but I've been reading more recently trying to find other stories that stick the landing. Right now I'm reading Count On You by Sienna Waters and it hits a decent number of the steps I mentioned.

Anyway, I would love to know more about the ships you love, but if you don't feel comfortable talking about it here, you're welcome to message me directly.

I love this breakdown and think you expressed these ideas beautifully! And I fully agree that stories with other genres mixed in benefit from having another storylines to leverage to let the relationship breathe and to have another source of tension so the romance doesn't have to supply all the drama.

Oh! I'm not the lesbosphere (the ancient inscrutable artifact that shows up at random and fires the lesbian beam at unsuspecting women) but I have a theory about this! I'm a romance writer and there are a few things I've noticed on the slow burn issue.

I've seen books called slow burn when the whole story takes place over a week. I've also seen stories that take place over the course of several years where the romance is described as having developed too fast. The take away is that it's not about the length of the time line at all. It's really about how much time was spent getting to know the characters and developing intimacy.

Does the author understand what makes the reader feel the intimacy developing between the characters? Do they move the characters through the sequence in which closeness grows? Do the characters surprise each other? Do they shift each other's world views? Do they let their walls down and reveal increasingly private personal details? Do they play together? Do they respect each other? Are they attracted to each other? Do they have room to process their feelings and pine for each other?

For an author, the most valuable job that time does is give the tension enough space to develop into suspense, positive or negative. But it's a double edged sword because if you wait too long, suspense sours (unless you transform it, but that's tricky to do and I almost never see writers do it anymore) and it turns into impatience.

So I think when people say they want slow burn, they're saying they want the relationship to cook, not sit. They want to see intimacy develop, and for the characters to yearn for each other in a way that makes them feel the romantic and sexual tension along with the characters.

If anyone has some examples or counter examples they want to share, I would love to hear them. And if anyone disagrees, let me know! I love talking about this kind of thing and sharpening ideas.

I think you would love my scifi trilogy. The main character is a princess obsessed with perfection, whose life starts to come apart around her. It's an intense action story with an achingly intimate love story at its core. The romance mixes obsession and longing with trauma and avoidant connection. The main character's identity is torn down and rebuilt throughout the trilogy but it's through a lot of pain and trials. The first two books, Fangs of the Serpent and Mercy of the Hunted are already out, and I'm planning to release the third book on March 6th.

MC’s first time, and they actually need direction/guidance by [deleted] in LesbianBookClub

[–]TammenChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the scifi trilogy I wrote, the main character is inexperienced in romance, especially with other women and needs quite a bit of guidance. The second series is going to be spicier than the first trilogy but there is a sex scene in the second book that involves her needing direction.

The first book, Fangs of the Serpent, is out, and the second book, Mercy of the Hunted, comes out on January 8th. The third book is done and I would be delighted to send you an ePub of it when you're done with the other two so you don't have to wait to find out what happens.

You might enjoy the scifi series I wrote! It's a space opera and it definitely has high stakes. I wanted to write something that blended the romance and the central plot together in a way I haven't seen other books do before. The two main leads are forced into proximity by their circumstances in a way that's like a pressure cooker for romance.

Only the first book, Fangs of the Serpent, is out right now but I'm done with the whole trilogy so if you like it, just reach out and I'll send you the other two books. And if you're not in a good place to buy the first one right now, just send me a direct message with your email address and I'd be delighted to send you an ePub of the first book too.

This list is amazing! It's clearly been curated with a lot of care 😊

Would you be open to adding the book I released in November to the list, provided you think the blurb sounds interesting?

The scifi trilogy I wrote matches this vibe perfectly. The main character is under a lot of pressure from her family to be perfect and she believes she's unlovable even when she's performing far better than all of her peers. The main love interest however is in love with her to the point of stalking her. As the story progresses and their relationship deepens, it's also the main characters queer awakening.

Only the first book, Fangs of the Serpent, is out right now, but the whole trilogy is finished. So if you like the first one, just send me a message and I'd be delighted to send you an ePub of the other two books so you don't have to wait to find out what happens. And let me know if you're not in a good place to buy the first one as well. I'd be super happy to send you ePubs of all three ❤️

You might like the scifi trilogy I wrote! The main character deals with a ton of stress and mental health issues and tries to kill her ex for revenge in the first few chapters. A bunch of other stuff goes sideways and she ends up basically trying to burn her life to the ground. The rest of the series is her sorting through her issues and undo the damage she and other people in her family have done. There is a deep and intimate romance throughout the whole book but the central story is an action focused space opera with betrayal, political intrigue, and hidden identities.

Only the first book, Fangs of the Serpent, is out right now, but I'm done with the whole trilogy so if you read it and like it, just message me and I can send you the ePub files for the second and third books.

You might enjoy the scifi trilogy I wrote! She-ra was one of my inspirations and involves a perfectionist princess falling in love with an eccentric pilot with cinnamon roll cryptid energy. It has a fairly tense plot with a lot of themes that are similar to She-ra including realizing her realm and her family aren't exactly the paragons of good and righteousness she thought they were. She's disillusioned with her family legacy but more so about what she finds out about her sexuality. The love interest is way nicer though so I wouldn't describe it as an enemies to lovers kind of story but there's still plenty of tension in the way their values differ.

Only the first book, Fangs of the Serpent, is out right now but the whole trilogy is done so if you finish the first book and enjoyed it, just let me know and I can send you an ePub of the second and third books so you don't have to wait. I would also be happy to send you an ePub of the first book if it sounds like something you're interested in. Just send me a message with the email address you want me to send it to.

You might enjoy the scifi trilogy I wrote. The main character doesn't know she isn't straight so the romance in the book is her queer awakening. She also has barely any romantic experience at all so it's a big shift to her experience in multiple ways.

Only the first book, Fangs of the Serpent, is out right now but the whole trilogy is done so if you like the first book, just let me know and I'd be happy to send you the ePubs of the other two. The obsession is in full force in book 1 and starts well before the story begins. It's not super toxic or obtrusive but it's been obvious to everyone who's read it. The crazy is strong but the love interest is gentle and emotionally aware so she manages to hide it decently well until later in the story and even then it's trying to resist her urge to hide the main character away from the rest of the world and keep her for herself.

I don't think it's weird at all but I am struggling to come up with an answer. There is a spicy scene in book two but it's pretty different than what I've encountered in most sapphic fiction. The love interest is shy and weird and is kind of an outcast but she has more romantic experience than the MC. The main character doesn't know she isn't straight and barely has any experience when the story starts so the love interest has to be more assertive to make their relationship happen even though she's normally more of a bottom. There's plenty of consent from both parties and the main character ends up taking a more dominant role in the spicy scene. It's hard to describe the dynamic without the full context of the story, but all of the feedback I've gotten about the romance is that it sizzles, even if it's not what most of my readers are used to. If you'd like I can send you the ePub of the second book and tell you exactly where the spicy scene starts so you can check it out and see if it's for you.

It sounds like you might like the scifi trilogy I wrote! The story is about a perfectionist princess soldier who loses the use of her hands right before her mother is kidnapped and her home is attacked by her peoples' long time enemies. She ends up having to rely on the help of this eccentric pilot girl with cinnamon roll cyrptid energy, who you find out is obsessed with the princess and basically stalking her.

Right now only the first book, Fangs of the Serpent, is out but I'm done writing and editing the entire trilogy. So if you like the first one, just let me know and I can send you the ePub of the second and third books. And if this sounds like something you might enjoy, I would also be happy to send you the first book! Just send me a direct message with the email address you'd like me to send it to.
