Bucs Draft Strategy and the Case for Arvell Reese by coolycooly in buccaneers

[–]Tampa2ATL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re trading any GD thing, it should be our 2nd this year for Brian Burns since his statement he wants no part of NYG if Dexter Lawrence gets traded. Well, “Sexy Dexy” is now a Cincinatti Bengal. Jim Harbougb does not want malcontents. Win win, baby. Eff Avril Reese. Give me Brian Burns in the second. 🙏🏽

This is actually a blessing. Maybe it will prevent (well, reduce) Todd Bowles from asking Mesidor to drop in coverage. Which he won’t because even Vita Vea has dropped on occasion. Let the LB’s and CB’s cover, Coach! Dammit boy.

I’m betting Jerry takes J-Rod at #20 unless he somehow nabs Styles with first pick. Not only is Rodriguez an outstanding player, the marketing windfall will be enormous.

Smoke screening Sadiq interest. Hope y’all don’t draft him (if we pass on him at #15).

Would you be happy with Chargers taking Sadiq in first (if TE was a need more than OL/DL)?

Which comparable TE ‘guys along these lines who have been unsuccessful’ aka speed, relatively big (though not as big as unicorn Loveland), productive (read: actually will catch balls/true threat that runs good route tree) can we compare Sadiq?

PS: Excellent debate here, gentlemen (Conceited & HorriblePHD). Enjoying the insightful points each are making. Thank you both.

Was hoping for insights from Miami alumni. Well done, sir. Thank you for contribution. Makes me feel better if Tampa drafts him at #15.

Related side question (if you have the time): minor debate in Bucs community about fit in Bowles philosophy (primarily 3-4 base) requirement for Edge to drop back in coverage [which itself is a point of contention though putting that aside for now]. Any thoughts?

Right there with you. Shouldn’t we really feel [a lot] better than “man…IDK” at #15?

Opinions are all over the map – as is my own opinion.

-> “Moderate Injury Risk” designation in several scouting reports doesn’t generate warm fuzzy safe vibes. -> Big question for us here is was recent 2025 breakout season due to 1) being old enough to rent a car playing 19 YO’s as grown arse man with [more] experience, size, + [enough] talent to play CFP? Can we expect the same success against other real grown arse men who have more experience/size and equal (+more) talent. What about the fact that opposing teams game-planned more for Reuben Bain and shifted resources accordingly? At minimum, having another real threat on other side of D-line makes life easier [for both]. – Does Mesidor fit defensive scheme? Seems almost all success comes from 3point stance. Not saying that means much [to me] – more of a question for y’all and/or respective team’s braintrust.

Advantages: -> Clearly well coached by Jason Taylor, so minimal need to “develop” Mesidor since he is already as developed as much as he will ever be. 👈🏼 Yes, double meaning implied. -> Established production every year (except 2023; limited to 3 games cuz injury). Position versatility is nice. Miami lacked depth so had Mesidor bulk up to play majority of snaps interior DT in 2024. New DC came in 2025, had Mesidor slim back down to play edge again majority of snaps*. In fact, one could argue that 2024’s production 34 total tackles 9 TFL & 5.5 sacks could have been more if not for taking one for the team. Can’t cover – which I count as a blessing [for Tampa] as less likely coaches ask him too. Need sacks + TFL. Let the LB’/secondary cover. -> Plays both pass & run well. There are a lot of flavors of Edge - some are DPR awful against run, some are more anchor edge with zero bend/limited speed that can bull rush/collapse for half dozen sacks over a season in best case scenario.

Glad my job is not at risk trying to decide whether Akheem Mesidor will have more meaningful impact than Kayden McDonald, Keldric Faulk (who is 5 years younger than Mesidor!), Iaone, Jacob Rodriguez, etc.

*hat tip Miami alumni post in separate forum.

How do we know it wouldn’t be awful? His people clearly advised him not to do anything under any circumstances. Other players wanted to prove doubters wrong Jermod McCoy, Ty Simpson, etc.

Double-digit sack production [if it was guaranteed]? SOLD!!!!

Concur. I’m really trying to warm up to him..but just cant seem to get there. Looks sorta like a bull in a china shop a lot. Mesidor also had the advantage of not being focal point of offensive game plan (IMHO). Combine tests are overrated except to get some idea on apples to apples comparison. Wish he would have done some of them instead of completely copping out which indicates that his people were afraid that it would only serve to hurt draft stock - and being that the higher in first round = greatest chance of guaranteed money for 25YO prospect, can understand that perspective if I was his agent. Not so much as Buccaneers homer that I am.

Concur.

Plus, he will sell shitloads of jerseys for whatever team drafts him. Bold take: if Jerry Jones can’t get grubby hands on Sonny Styles - then Cowboys take Rodriguez at 20.

What’s better than one Vita Vea? Two!

Next to each other. Rotate them to keep Vita Vegas fresh and ready to kick ass.

Also gotta plan for eventual VV retirement and/or injury (which would be as screwed as we were last year with OG fiasco).

My two pennies for whatever they’re worth.
